I read that this was a "technical decision"...

Well, Villanueva wasn't at his best in last year's FIBA Americas and maybe Asselin is a better fit with Horford and Martinez.

As for Mejia, he is expected to start practising in Kentucky with the rest of the team.

What's his status? Is he considered a naturalized player too? Because if he is, then he won't be in the final roster as well...

Yes, it was coach/federation decision, Villanueva was clearly unhappy 'bout it. As officials stated Asselin suits better, cause team lacks real C. Don't know if it's the real reason, looks kinda fishy. Maybe there were some issues between player and coach, there're some staements about Villanueva's bad attitude last year or maybe it was big insurance, who knows.

I don't think so, he was born in DR. Otherwise, if you're right and he is expected to join the team in Kentucky, there would be no reason for him to do so if Asselin is already chosen as naturalized player

Yes, he is. He played for the cadet NT.
