  • The road of Serbia and USA : normal or unfair ?

    Serbia

    - greece
    - brazil
    - France

    And USA in final

    Team USA :

    -Mexico
    - slovenia
    - lithuania

    Beat Serbia in final

    -------

Im not speaking about the deserve, just the schedule and just Know if it was normal or unfair. I never see 2 team play in the debut of tournament and in the semi ( France serbia )

The second bracket was stupid, the Draw and schedule of fiba was unfair for me, it was a poor final They look tired and it Will be the same if it was Spain or x

Dont get me wrong, USA Will be the favorite anyway

Serbia also had a day less of rest and had to play Brazil, France and Spain to qualify for KO games in the first place. So yes, if you argue that the road was much harder I would say yes. If you argue that they were more tired in the final, I would definitely say yes.

But if it was up to team USA, I think they would have preferred the other hard bracket. And they would still won.

Whether it's fair? Well, what if USA were in group B and had played Serbia in the top 16?

Anyway, I think FIBA wants to promote the game. Allows some weaker teams like Mexico to advance further into the tournament.

It's not disputable, Serbia did indeed have a tougher road to the finals than USA. In USA's case I don't think it would have mattered what group they were put in. But fans were upset about that whent the drawings were released. The Groups were manipuated for a Spain/USA final, in these cases we clearly see the influence of money (ratings) & location in FIBA'S decisions.

One could argue that Serbia was more battle tested than USA and more prepared so maybe it evened out in the end?. Serbia really is a great basketball team to handle Greece, Brazil & France..props to them. Serbia did not look tired to me, they were throwing alley oops in the 2nd half having fun after USA dismantled them in the first half.

I admit I don't understand the FIBA draw but isn't it based on rankings? USA is the highest ranked team in the world. You would think they would start off against the lowest ranked teams the way they do in other seeded tournaments and the playoffs.

Remember Serbia also finished 4th in their group which made their route even harder, however that one is their own fault.

This WC format should be changed!

Brazil should play against Argentina, Greece, Croatia and Senegal. Later quarter finals etc.

more tough basketball games, better to watch, and fair!

US wins either way, but they should've been in the harder bracket. At least MAYBE the games would've been a little more competitive instead of this ROFL stomp.

The draw is conducted by putting teams in 6 "pots" with 1 team being drawn from each pot for each group. The pots are mostly designed to keep teams from same organization/continent from being in the same group. Of course Europe has so many teams (deserved in my opinion) that the have teams in several pots. The only main restriction was the US and Spain were on different sides of the draw.
                Here are the pots:
                1) US, Spain, Lith, Arg (top 4 seeds)
                2) Angola, Senegal, Egypt, Fin (Africa + 1 Euro team)
                3) NZ, Iran, Korea, Philippines (Asia + NZ)
                4) Serb, Slov, Cro, Ukr ("lower" ranked Euro teams (lower than pot 6))
                5) Bra, PR, Mex, Dom Rep (Americas)
                6) Gre, Tur, Fra, Australia ("higher" ranked Euro teams + Australia)

Between the fact that rankings are never quite right as they use results going back a ways plus don't consider players that aren't playing that year (Most would not consider Argentina the 3rd best team even before the tournament) and that group A was unfortunate in drawing the best teams from Pots 4, 5 and 6 while the US group drew close to the weakest. Some will always suspect fixing by FIBA but I don't see why they would want to stack against the home team and risk reducing attendance possibly if they got eliminated.

So yes, Serbia certainly had the more difficult path but it was most likely just bad luck in the draw because FIBA is more worried about geography than rankings. Not necessarily a bad thing but it can produce groupings like this.

I don't know how the seeding worked in this tournament... but usually in tournaments, the higher a team is ranked the easier their road to the championship is.

                  For example, #1 plays #16, #2 plays #15, #3 plays #14, etc.
