  • Who do you give the wild card to?

I am planning to do 4 polls and I'm starting with the countries that barely missed qualifying from each one of the 4 continental zones. The teams are in alphabetical order.
    27
    Cote d'Ivoire
    0%
    0
    Italy
    0%
    22
    Taiwan
    0%
    2
    Venezuela
    0%

hey hagakure, welcome back, first of all...
why don't you make a poll with longer list and multiple choice option? It's up to you, of course

BTW, if I had the power, I'd give it to Venezuela, Italy, Greece, and China.

Among that 4 teams, of course Italy... but there are many other candidate teams... strong ones like Greece, Turkey, Russia, Brazil...

Thanks. I was planning to do these polls since before the Eurobasket and I only wanted to include teams that were next in line in each of the continental zones final rankings. My rationale was to see who fans would pick if the wild card picks were based solely on performance.

I would pick Italy and China for sure. Then either Greece, Turkey or Russia should get the 2nd European spot: I would base this on which team is likely to field a better squad next year. For instance, will Kirilenko, Khryapa, Kaun and Mozgov play or not? Then either Canada or Brazil would get the final spot, again based on which team is likely to field a more competitive team next year.

China would get the nod for marketing reasons, to expand the worldwide interest in the WC. Italy would get it because their potential roster next year is really exciting:

            Hackett, Cinciarini, Diener
            Belinelli, Aradori
            Gallinari, Gentile
            Datome, Melli
            Bargnani, Cusin

Russia, italy and China are lock..If Bennett becomes a solid star and Wiggins would be for real ahead o time..and if Canada able to convince FIBA that they will send their best players they will take the spot over Brazil (whose players are in the prime of their pro careers and biggest payadays)
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

That would be so much better than the wild cards. Unfortunately, it's not the performance of the team that matters the most to FIBA...

Out of these 4 choices, Italy is the obvious one.

why would you have a qualifying tournament when there was already a qualifying tournament already.. doesn't make sense really..

It works just fine in the Olympics and is much more fair than the wild card system of the WC. The best teams that didn't make it from all the continents get to compete against each other and decide who's the most worthy of qualifying, instead of FIBA deciding who should play.

Brazil, China, Turkey & Italy make sense. Heard rumor of 8-team wild card tourney? Thoughts?
So maybe there could be a qualification tournament before the World Cup... just like in the Olympic Games.

I find the idea of a wild card tournament for the last slots in the world cup to be a much better proposition compared to the bidding that is subject to red tape.
