  • Spain FIBA Worlds Wishlist

Pretty sure each and every nation has their own history in FIBA Worlds so the "wishlist" for each will be different with different motivations and reasons.

Say if you're one of the top contenders (not named USA) you'd want to be in a group which will potentially not draw you with Team USA in the KO rounds (hard to predict that at the start but it's logical) or simply be in a lesser group so you won't have to get tired early in the tournament. For some, it's probably about match-ups too because certain teams own other teams historically and maybe teams would want to ride on that momentum as they'll have more confidence. Of course there are the rivalries which we want to see meet early because they might not mee

So which teams (either your own or otherwise) would you want to be grouped with? Or which match-ups do you like to see?

Not speaking for all Filipinos, but for the Filipinos here's my personal wishlist:

#1. Same Group with Puerto Rico - Renaldo Balkman. We're looking at you. He was banned in the PBA because he choked a teammate... And well, because of his attitude problem. If Philippines-Puerto Rico meet, expect fireworks because we know this is one of the weaknesses of PR: we're going to piss him off to death and force him to fold mentally. We play physical (expect cheap shots all around ) and we are going to do that all-game long. Too bad Arwind Santos (the player he choked) will probably not be part of the team, but hey we have 12 other players who know of Balkman's history.

#2 Same Group with U.S.A. - Unlike other teams probably, we want to be grouped with the best team in the world because as a country we are suckers for NBA basketball. Most likely the spread for this game will run between +90/+100 with the Philippines as deep underdogs. And we won't care. We just want to battle with the best team so we know where we stand.

#3 Same Group with New Zealand/Australia - With the changes in the FIBA qualifying format in the future, best to see how we fare against these teams who we might be seeing in future FIBA regional qualifiers.

So which teams/countries do you want to face in Spain?
If there is no basketball in heaven, i am NOT going.

    SMALLBALL, bitches..

As an American and diehard supporter of our team, when I think teams I want to play I think group stages and beyond.

Spain: I fully believe for the WC in their home country they will prepare their A team, since we will likely have a B squad and will be in a hostile environment that could very well be the first time the US has ever been a clear underdog in a match.

Greece: This is more personal than has to do with their teams, since I've joined in 2008 I've had many memorable clashes with Greek fans. I both respect their team, and take delight when they lose. We haven't played since Beijing (group stage), and haven't played in the world cup/championships since they beat us in 2006. I'd love to see Team USA tear them apart in a knock out game.

Canada: Odd choice but if Canada makes it, it might feature Wiggins. They are the up and comer in the region. I personally feel they will eventually surpass Argentina and Brazil as the dominant team in the Americas not named the US. Might as well kick of the boarder war now.

Argentina: I feel old Argentina will not be at the 2016 olympics, I don't even know if they'll qualify for this tourney, the rivalry we've had has been the best since the old USSR (I love Spain but they've never beaten us). Just one last hurrah would be great.

Should have clarified that they haven't beaten us during their dominant era 2006-Present. But yes I do like to pretend 2002/2004 never happened

As a believe that Brazil will get one wildcard, I would like to face:

Australia: This match up has always been great. Historically impossible to name a favorite to win. Some of the games in the Oscar Schmidt era are unforgetable for me.

Puerto Rico: I know that probably we would be in the same pot for the groups draw, but this is a classic rivalry. I grew up watching awesome games agaisnt Picolino Ortiz and that game in 2002 still hurts me. Puerto Rico is one of the teams that I respect the most.

USA: This is the only game that really makes the brazilians watch basketball now days. The bad thing about it is: we play well as we never did before, and lose as always...

Italy: If they happen to put all their players together, they will send a very nice basketball team to Spain. Something new.

And for God's sake, please don't put Argentina in our way. I don't want to have nightmares with Scola anymore.
