From the university games, Korea University's Lee Jong-Hyun, Lee Seung-Hyun and Kyung-Hee's Kim Jong-Kyu and Kim Min-Koo are playing well.

Lee has improved since last year. Built heft and some proactive athletic response. At times, he looks like another Oh Se-Keun. That low center of gravity he uses well to box out and the explosive leap makes him a capable rebounder.

Ulsan Mobis Phoebus head coach Yoo Jae-Hak was appointed the national team head coach for the 2012 FIBA Asia Tournament to be held in Manila this August. Yoo will observe and take an active role for the 12 man team for the FIBA East Asia tournament on which Kyung Hee head coach Cho Boo-Yong is handling. Yoo will name a player pool after the FIBA East Asian tourney. Coach Yoo said that he envisions a pool of players that is a mix of youth and veterans that is primed for winning. Yoo coached the national team in the 2009 FIBA Asia Tournament in Tianjin and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

Yoo Jae-Hak has an interesting offense playbook history. Over the years, his offense emulated where ever Jason Kidd landed and the offense where Kidd orchestrated, to the extent osf almost similar offensive patterns alongside some post isolation from the import (which is a KBL team staple). Yoo also happened to have Yang Dong-Geun over the years to facilitate his evolving offense.

He ran Byron Scott and Jason Kidd's high screen offense with Yang Dong Geun in the Ulsan championship in 2007. In the 2010 championship, Yoo emulated the Dallas Mavericks offense of Rick Carlisle and Jason Kidd / Dirk Nowitzki given the High Post Trail with the local version of Yang Dong-Geun and Ham Ji-Hoon alongside Aaron Haynes as a designated Caron Butler role that reads the high screen to cut in the wings and fold.

In the 2009 FIBA Asia, Yoo ran that same offensive pattern with the National team and Kim Min-Soo was his designated Nowitzki as Yang Dong Geun ran the offense. Kim thrived given those open looks in the baseline and the freedom to create via the triple threat. In the 2010 Asian games, Yoo ran Coach K's 2008 quick hitters given the 1-4 sparsing wherein Jason Kidd partly orchestrated that offense in the Beijing Olympics. To no one's surprise, Yang ran that with three designated shooters and atleast one post rebounder as a keeper for the quick 4-1 lane fill fast break that Coach K employed and it also happen to materialize with Yoo as the coach.

This season, Yoo Jae-Hak ran Mike Woodson's set with the New York Knicks and Jason Kidd. Yoo's first five of:

        Curtis Withers / Rod Benson
        Ham Ji-Hoon
        Moon Tae-Young
        Kim Si-Rae
        Yang Dong-Geun

Is similar to Mike Woodson's unorthodox early starting lineup of:

        Tyson Chandler
        Kurt Thomas (Before he retired)
        Carmelo Anthony
        Raymond Felton
        Jason Kidd

Consisting of two post players, two point guards and a talented wing in Anthony / Moon. The most striking patterns materialize with Ulsan this season as Yoo ran Woodson's sets of:

        1-2-2 Ball reversal

Starts with Kidd / Felton setting it up in the high baseline with Anthony stepping forward as recipient where the wing navigates two low screens from Chandler and Thomas while the guard, depending on which defenders commit / trapped in the low key scramble will have an open shot as soon as that guard cuts clock work into the base opposite to be hit with a past from Anthony still stationary in the baseline.

Yoo ran a similar instance with Moon Tae-Young steps in from a pass made by Yang DG or Kim SR as Ham Ji-Hoon hops into the post to establish a post up recipient as a false action to be able to seal a converging lane where Curtis Withers sets a timed staggered screen for either Yang DG or Kim SR who does not have the ball, for a CnS position. They ran that play over and over again with the Sakers weak interior defense to get shot after shot.

        Double Stagger Screen

Mike Woodson's favorite play for his off-guard where again, it starts at the high baseline with a wing player as recipient and as soon as the wing has the ball, post player in the paint sets an up-screen allowing another post player to curl around it and to be in line for a post up position with the wing upfront. Only for that post player to quickly move down low and sets a standard staggered screen for the other post player so that post player swipes past in the paint for an open shot. Woodson ran this with Kurt Thomas for open shots.

While in the KBL, Withers and Ham Ji-Hoon would execute this as they ran rings with slow and lumbering centers for those easy mid-range shots. Ham Ji-Hoon usually shot it as Withers with his frame, froze two defenders. In the playoffs, it was Benson and Ham that ran this against Seoul SK Knights.

        1-4 Stack Zone Attack

Not used for Yang Dong-Geun but more effective utilization of Moon for a much higher percentage field goal attempt by attacking the zone via the interior. This one started materializing when Woodson started utilizing Carmelo Anthony as a PF where the latter would isolate face up in the elbows but Yoo did not emulate it all the way though, Yoo reverted back to Byron Scott's 1-4 corner ISO with the New Jersey Nets back when they had Keith Van Horn and Kenyon Martin. Kidd would create a distraction by ordering a high screen with a center and two wingers would move closer to the curve pockets and a lone post player moves back for a recipient in the elbows. Yoo did this with Ham Ji-Hoon and Moon Tae-Young against teams with teams that have weak interior defense like KCC, LG and Samsung.

As for the 2013 South Korean national team, Yang Dong-Geun is still expected to suit up as Yoo trusts Yang with religious following. I don't see Yoo trusting any point guard like Kim Sun-Hyung or Park Jae-Hyun to take command of the team. THis also adds gas to the fire where rumors has been floating around that Moon Tae-Young could be called up for the national team as a scorer primarily. Much like his brother Moon Tae-Jong in 2011 where the latter was brought up as a wing help fo defense, rebounding and scoring. With mobile bigmen in the pool, this may point to Yoo Jae-Hak rehashing his 2009-2010 offensive patterns or his 2012-13 playbook for the national team.

Goyang Orions foreign star player Leon Williams is still committed to becoming a naturalized Korean and according to sources, the KBA is looking to add him up to reinforce Korea in next year's 2014 Asian Games. He and his Korean girlfriend are looking to marry this year and Williams wants to stay in Korea.

          This was last year:

Yoo Jae-Hak stated in Arirang Sports that Kim Jong-Kyu, Kim Min-Koo, Lee Jong-Hyun and Lee Seung-Hyun are ready for international competition as well as KBL competition. Yoo reiterated that he will form a 12 man team that meshes youth and veteran experience as synergy to be a competitive team.

If we read between the lines, Yoo Jae-Hak is hinting that the four are locks in the national team. Lee Jong-Hyun and Kim Jong-Kyu are mainstays for the past two years with both suiting up in the 2012 Olympic wildcard tournament and Kim JK with the 2011 FIBA Asia as he backed up Ha Seung-Jin. Kim Min-Koo is an emerging winger and has a good overall game based on his all around wing play. While Lee Seung-Hyun improved tremendously in the past two years and has built up a frame for his PF position.

              Youth
              Kim Jong-Kyu
              Kim Min-Koo
              Lee Jong-Hyun
              Lee Seung-Hyun

I think the veterans + youth professionals

              Yang Dong-Geun
              Kim Sun-Hyung
              Yoon Ho-Young
              Park Chan-Hee
              Choi Jin-Soo
              Cho Sung-Min
              Kim Yong-Hwan
              Ham Ji-Hoon or Kim Min-Soo

The national team had a scrimmage against a university selection. Boxscores were not published, but from the fans that tweeted, the young ones did good for the scrimmage as the likes of Choi Joon-Young, Park Jae-Hyun and Doo Kyung-Min showed composure against professionals.

It must be from the veteran presence of the Sang-Moo players like Jeong Young-Sam and co. as well as the experience derived from the Winter Basketball Cup that pitted college teams against KBL teams.

Tomorrow, the national team will have a scrimmage against the same squad with the similar composition of players just like KCC.

                  Wha do u expect?
There is no one left of the Main Players like Sandrin, Eric, Moon Tae Jong, Sung Min, Yang Dong Geun and more. Just youngsters.
They have a tough goup in the East Asian Champs.
Is this roster just for the Qualifiers or also for the Champs in September?

Eventually, Korea will need to lean on younger players. The 2010 NT for the Asian Games was among the oldest in recorded history. The 2011 NT in WuHan was full of veterans except for Kim Jong-Kyu and Park Chan-Hee. This is just the roster for the FIBA East Asia tournament and the roster for the FIBA Asia in Manila will have veterans and the KBL's rising stars. Players will be named after FIBA East Asia.

                        Musings:

Park Chan-Hee played point guard and some bit of shooting guard today. From his game, he is in the best shape of his life and he gets that deadly first step and that afterburner stride to finish those lay-ups against a Japanese compact zone.

Lee Seung-Hyun surprised me on this game. He is deceptively quick. If you look at his frame, you can't tell that he can drive as a power forward. Slipped past Kosuke Takeuchi in one play when Lee chose to face up after a pass in the baseline. Lee also showed that he can post up against Takeuchi and was able to stand his ground to not allow Takeuchi in posting up. Lee has really improved since last year and being cut from the national team after a back injury.

Park Jae-Hyun aside from Park Chan-Hee played spark plugged today. Hitting that back to back treys to demoralized the Japanese team.

In the third, Choi Bo-Young fielded Kim Jong-Kyu and Lee Jong-Hyun at the same time. Kim played C and Lee played PF. Kosuke Takeuchi was interviewed after the game and he said that both are stronger than they look as he could not push them around when he posted up. Must be from the core and resistance training with the national team.

Tomorrow, they face Chinese Taipei, a team that runs and guns with a pressure offense. Today, Korea's transition defense was a bit shaky in the 2nd half against Japan. I'm interested on how Korea's perimeter players will handle constant wing darts in the perimeter, unlike Japan's high baseline offense that stagnated with Korea's ball screen defense.

From a friend's facebook. He and his family made the trip from Seoul just to be a part of the tournament. Chanced upon Park Jae-Hyun, Lee Jong-Hyun and Lee Seung-Hyun.

Park Jae-Hyun played great today against Macau. Balanced out scoring and assists as he finished with a double double.

The Korean Basketball Association has announced the 24 man player pool intended for the FIBA Asia Qualifiers to be held in Manila this August.

                                Yang Dong-Geun (Ulsan Mobis Phoebus)
                                Kim Tae-Sol (Anyang KGC)
                                Kim Sun-Hyung (Seoul SK Knights)
                                Kim Min-Koo (Kyung Hee University)
                                Park Chan-Hee (Anyang KGC)
                                Cheon Ki-Beom (Yonsei University)
                                Doo Kyung-Min (Kyung-Hee University)
                                Kim Si-Rae (Changwon LG Sakers)

                                Cho Sung-Min (Busan Sonicboom KT)
                                Kang Byung-Hyun (KCC Egis)
                                Moon Tae-Young (Ulsan Mobis Phoebus)
                                Yoon Ho-Young (Wonju Dongbu Promy)
                                Moon Seung-Gon (Korea University)
                                Kim Min-Soo (Seoul SK Knights)
                                Ki Seung-Ho (Changwon LG Sakers)
                                Moon Tae-Jong (Free Agent)
                                Kim Yong-Hwan (Changwon LG Sakers)

                                Kim Joo-Sung (Wonju Dongbu Promy)
                                Lee Jong-Hyun (Korea University)
                                Lee Seung-Hyun (Korea University)
                                Kim Jong-Kyu (Kyung-Hee University)
                                Lee Seung-Jun (Wonju Dongbu Promy)
                                Ham Ji-Hoon (Ulsan Mobis Phoebus)
                                Choi Bo-Kyung (Seoul SK Knights)

Yoo Jae-Hak recommended Moon Tae-Young especially as Moon's older brother, Moon Tae-Jong suited up for Korea in 2011. I am quite happy that three Sakers are on the list. Kim Si-Rae played under Yoo for Ulsan's championship run and was under the mentorship of Yang Dong-Geun. Ki Seung-Ho and Kim Yong-Hwan are shooters like Cho Sung-Min. Extremely pleased that Park Chan-Hee is certainly a lock here. Cheon Ki-Beom was a surprise, but his emerging offensive game has turned heads, but he could be bumped down as Kim Sun-Hyung cannot be ignored.

Veterans like Kim Joo-Sung and Kim Min-Soo are valuable to the cause, but they will compete with youngsters for the final twelve. Choi Bu-Kyung and Lee Seung-Hyun are solid PFs as the national team is missing stalwart Oh Sek-Eun, both are ideal replacements as both can rebound and has the mid-range touch for the FIBA game. I think Yang Dong-Geun is a lock. As I said before, Yang has Yoo Jae-Hak's trust when it comes to carrying a team. While Lee Seung-Jun played in Venezuela last year and is pretty much adamant in playing for Korea anytime. He was recommended by Lee Sang-Beom on this one.
