Continental championships should be organized every 4 years and one of the international championships must be eliminated (WC, in my opinion), because that would give time to rest between the competitions and decrease the absences. The players prefer the Olympics and even for the fans (at least for me) the OG have a completely different importance. And we can't forget that basketball is one of the major sports in the Olympics.

I highly doubt FIBA will add 24 (32?) teams in the Olympics since the tournament would require more time to complete. It's hard enough scheduling games with 12 teams. Just imagine how difficult it would be with 24 teams as well as the other sporting events occurring.
Overall, I just don't see how eliminating the WC will solve anything. That's the only tournament where FIBA actually reaps a big award as far as money goes. I find it hard that they'll benefit from amateur tournaments.
Also, from a personal perspective, I always believe that if basketball is considered "major" and "important" to the world, then it should have its very own tournament. When equestrian is in the Olympics, basketball doesn't seem as significant.
One way or another, FIBA needs to get their shit together.

handball whose much physicall sport is played evrey year, when are olympics there are two major tournaments but players don't skip championships
i see few reasons
1st...to much money i basketball
2nd...in lot of people eys NBA is priorty and bigest competiton, unlike handball where big nt tarnaments are bigest titles
3rd, besides olympics EC and WC are played during season so players don't lose summer for swiming, preparations, fight for spot in roster and findig better contract
I see only one solution that wouldn't stop absentees, but would help bit that WC and EC are played right after season
negative: lack of time for proper preparations, injured players that didn't have time to recover
positive: after tournaments players would still have time for swiming, preparations, fight for spot in roster and findig better contract, and also would have chace to promote them self moreJordi Bertomeu sucks!

Hopefully the big names will come out more frequently if there is only one commitment q4 years.
For instance, Bron, Kobe, Carmelo, Bosh, Bozer and D-Wade are all missing it this summer for Team USA. Both as an American and as somebody who'll be covering the event live in Turkey, I'm ecstatic. Not that USA isn't proud of these stars---we are---but I'm hungry to find out what Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and David Lee are capable of in international play. I don't think the world knows much about Danny Granger or Tyreke Evans and this could be a terrific opportunity for some new faces to emerge on the scene in every country, not just America. All this Colangelo talk of making the USMNT a privilege and not a right is just BS. None of these NBA guys want to try out. None of the 12 from the Redeem Team are playing this summer which shows how poorly they view the WBCs. Basically we are going to have a USA program that is reverting back to the 2002-2004 days with none of the premier players.
FIBA needs to get it together and ensure that the best are coming out for the premier national team event (WBCs). They should even entertain the idea of switching it to another year so that it won't be in the same cycle as the World Cup because it can't live in its shadow. What's all the talk about teams not letting players play this summer? I thought that NBA clubs are not allowed to tamper with players playing in FIBA events.
"FIBA and the NBA have an agreement which states that neither the NBA nor its teams will prevent its players from participating in international competition as long as said competition doesn't interfere with an NBA regular season or playoff game and so long as the player is covered by insurance provided for the NBA team by the player's foreign federation."
Thoughts on how FIBA can become more like FIFA?

They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

We all hope Khatib would be ready to play in Turkey.
