Kind of spoils the 2010 WC considering they're both recent champions.

Was kind of hoping they wouldn't play each other until the final, more drama that way. That said potentially playing this game in Madrid would add a definite twist.

I agree with the above comments. But on the bright side it would be fantastic preparation for both teams. (and quite possibly adding the opposite effect of creating more drama for a future matchup).

I'm glad to see Colangelo wanting to play the tougher preparation games like Lithuania & Russia prior to the 2008 Olympics.

so USA, is apparently trying to play games against Spain, Lithuania and Greece (though no link on that last one).

Props to a challenging training schedule at least.

Last year at the Acropolis Tournament it was announced that Team USA would participate. I believe that Russia, Serbia, and Lithuania are also invited but I'm not sure about that.

Anyway, it was said that Greece and USA would play a game against each other and possibly two. The Acropolis Tournament is held at OAKA and it's not unusual to get 6,000 to 10,000 fans for games against European teams so conceivably a game against Team USA could get 18,000 or more just like important PAO games do.

As far as I know Team USA is still scheduled to play at the tournament so unless that has changed they will play at least one game against Greece at OAKA.

Not good ideas for the US to play in Spain and Greece IMO. Better to keep the friendlies low-pressure.

I was kind of hoping the US and Spain wouldn't play each other until the tournament, although I think it's a good measuring stick for both clubs. It's good for the US to play before a roudy, Spanish crowd if Madrid is selected as the site. I'm sure the Spanish will compete hard against the US, but I wonder if Spain is going to hold back some if its plays in case the two meet in the World Championships.

I think it's risky like others have said. However, I think this is more about exposing USA to the American fans back home, so people watch and maybe attend the games in Turkey.

USA's games since 2006 have all happened early in the morning (4 or 5 hour) when no one is able to watch. Not a good way to get the interest of people.

If FIBA had any clue on how to protect their product they would have forbiden this friendly.

The more I think about, so long as the United States doesn't blow out Spain it can actually build drama for the tournament. Any other outcome could make a rematch worth while, and even if the US did blow out Spain one could easily point to the two games at the Olympics to why that doesn't matter.

All that said if the United States and Spain both win their groups they can't meet in the finals anyway, at least according to these brackets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FI...d_Championship

Why not? If they lose they can always say that they were saving their best efforts for the knockout stages. Isn't that Fiba Europe motto?
