Originally posted by Dtown View PostArgentina has recovered nicely at the Americas, as it stands now Lebanon should be in good shape. The three teams that would likely get the nod over them (Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Argentina) all have fairly easy paths to qualifying now.
The Dominican Republic while talented (and imo going to qualify anyway), doesn't have really any history, successes, or great popularity in their country. So if they fail to qualify it's not a stretch to see Lebanon getting the nod over them.
You're saying that basketball doesn't have great popularity in my country
man, Basketball is the second most popular sport in The DR, only baseball is more popular. HOWEVER, basketball is played more among teenagers than baseball itself, what's more, basketball is the most practiced sport in Schools and Universities across the country.
HOW CAN YOU SAY IT"S not popular.
and on top of that The basketball federation is the one Sport federation in the country that received the most fundings of any sport Federation (and that's including the baseball federation)
The Government supports that much basketball, that The Current president gave personally the necessary money to the Basketball Federation for the Americas tourney. what other president do that
and about History, well we've being playing it since the 50's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, several Dominican players have been drafted since the First Dominican plkayer to do so in 1976, Hugo Cabrera., and we keep sending Dominican players to play in the several division of the NCAA, NCJAA, NAIA, etc.
and No success
Centrobaskets Gold medals
Panamerican Games' Silver Medal (only Brazil ,beat us with their NBAers)
Central American and Caribbean Games' Gold Medals
and don't get me wrong DetroitTown, I'm not saying that The Dominican Republic deserves a wild card at all, but, just the fact that you said that basketball is not popular there makes me get a little upset about it.
so that being said, i don't think we deserved a wild card, but not for the facts that you stating because Basketball in the DR is waaaaaaaaay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! popular, we HAD have success in the past (regionally speaking), the Goverment do support baketball there more than any other sport, and we have a long history in that sport.
but since aour showings in "The FiBA Americas Tournaments" have being Mediocre at best, we don't deserved a wild card

*I don't think that mexico have anychance to qualify...
*Panama must win all their matches in 2nd round which is impossible especially that they have games against puerto rico and canada...
*Uruguay can't win against brazil, argentina or D.R... plus their match against panama will not be easy..so they can't qualify...
Therefore, the winner between canada and D.R will be the on who will qualify with Brazil, puerto rico and Argentina...
i think if canada qualifies to WC, this will give more chances for Lebanon to get a Wild Card....cuz in Lebanon basketball is more popular than in D.R, Lebanese history in basketball is better than D.R, plus Lebanon in next to Turkey while D.R is far....Though i think that D.R is a good team that deserves to be in WC, but Lebanon deserves more :P GOO LEBANON hope that we can be in Turkey in 2010 ...

I think one of the 4 wild cards should not go neither to America nor to Europe.....cz honestly guys 10 teams from europe (out of 16 in the Euro tournament) and 6 teams from america is too much....total 16 of 24 in turkey from only 2 continents!!!
concerning the debate about wild card...i think uruguay have the least chance...
between canada and lebanon...well through the last decade i think lebanon was better...but i think a bad record from canada in the 2nd round of fiba america will help lebanon...
i was happy that venezuela are out from the first round lowering their chances to nearly zero in getting the wild card..
dominican republic has a great team...i think they will beat every team in group BHistory will write --> "In 2009, China stole the asian cup from Lebanon"

Fiba
As the results clearly below:
URU vs DOM 74-80
CAN vs ARG 51-67
MEX vs BRA 61-92
PUR vs PAN 79-51
Those results are showing an obvious difference in BB level among top four teams and the rest
Uruguay is a good team but still not experienced
Canada is a good ball handler team but not strong physically.. This week point will always get them loose in any big game
I bet DOM/ARG/BRA/PUR are gona qualify direclty to the WC2010
For the wildcard, Fiba preferrably most probably will choose europe/asia/africa as both are close to Turkey unless something else changesLast edited by samer_1_2; 09-02-2009, 07:44 AM.

Why not 10 out of 16 teams from europe if 16 out of 16 would beat Lebanon if it came to a showdown?
Aside from that, there's probably not the slightest doubt that for example a team like the Domenican Rep. with guys like Villanueva, Garcia and Horford wouldn't have too many problems with Lebanon either right?
If these two continents simply have the better teams, they should naturally claim a high number of spots.Last edited by bsgermany; 09-02-2009, 03:53 PM.

and by the way not all the 16 teams can beat us .. i'am surethat we can win half of the teams between the 16... and we proved in last WC 2006 that we can beat european teams when we beat france that was 5th in last world cup... now we have a more experienced talented team that can play good games in WC iam sure that we can reach 2nd round this time if we had the chance to be in WC 2010 .... and in Fiba america argentina and brazil are the only teams that we can't win.....

I have no idea where you get that confidence from - certainly not from the performance of the Lebanon team at the Asian Champs. Beating half of the teams at the Euro Champs?? That's ridiculous!
If your country could really beat that many strong nations, why couldn't they even manage to finish among the top three ion Asia?
Talent?? ...and I thought guys like Vroman and Freije were Americans.

Puerto Rico beats you easily, a Team Panama with all its players (only) too, Canada and Uruguay can beat you, and this current Dominican team will destroy Lebanon, Venezeula might beat you too, though Lebanon can also beat (I'll say it's even there)1

*yeah when u lose in the semi final by 3 points against china on their own court becuz of very obvious referee's mistakes the result will be not qualifing to WC....
*yeah offcourse we can beat teams like poland, macedonia, latvia, bulgaria, england, israel( which we won't play ever against them for sure).. and we can give turkey and croatia tough matches ( 8 /16) ---> half of the european teams .... btw the the problem in asia was also the chemistry in our NT .. until the WC 2010 this problem will be solved if we get a wild card :S ...Last edited by khaledlebanon; 09-02-2009, 06:47 PM.

Of course, it's always possible that Lebanon would beat one of those teams once in a while on a perfect day and the opponent probably not at full strenght - but under normal circumstances, the teams you have mentioned would beat Lebanon - some of them easily.
Giving Croatia or Turkey a tough match? You must be joking! Turkey needed no more than a C-squad to beat China in the Stankovic cup, and Croatian and Lebanese basketball are worlds apart with no chance to even get anywhere close to an upset.
England at full strenght (with their NBA-pros) would slaughter you guys and as Lewis already mentioned, several teams in the American zone would also be able zo beat you easily.
Lebanon has a very solid team for Asian standards, but you are completely ignoring, that it's still quite a long way from one of Asians best teams to one of the better nations in the world.
