Talking about wildcards - I just watched Oceanic basketball and Australia falling to New Zealand 100-78 in an exciting match. I'd say the looser of that series deserves it at least as much as any asian team - if not more!!

      wildcards for wc2010

I think they should spread the wild cards all over the continents without politics interference
asia should have one -- Lebanon must be the first qualifyer
america should have one -- if one of the strongest teams failed to qualify
europe should have one or/and Two-- if Italy or another big team failed
africa maybe next time should have one

But I hate the wild cards, no sense no meaning it s kind of cheating
      FIBA MUST MODIFY THE RULES

Disliking the wildcards is something I absolutely agree on!

Nevertheless I believe that the max. possible number of wildcards should be given to Europe and maybe South America or Australia, because particularly Europe is leaving a lot of teams behind, that could easily be considered stronger than any team in Asia or Africa - even the ones directly qualifying.
It would be nice to see more teams from Asia and Africa there, but only if they are good enough and could be considered stronger than what would be left behind for example in Europe - and that is currenly not the case!

As far as the wildcard is concerned, I would prefer a tournament with the best "leftovers" like Australia, Lebanon, european teams etc. That would be the best way to see who is actually best qualified.

          totally agree

          I agree with you
There should be a specific tournament collecting all failed teams from all zones and the first 4 teams can qualify to WC
games style: round robin plays means any team should play with all other teams and like this we can know exactly who is the most strongest team
But this comes back to FIBA executive board in order to execute this process

Calm down! Australia lost by 28 points a few days ago to Brazil (it was just the second preparation game from brazilian NT this season).

Ugh they seriously need to move oceania in with Asia, there was no drama for anyone except the boomers and kiwis. Congrats to New Zealand on winning (though they were already qualified anyway...)

                      Field is now
Turkey, USA, Angola, Côte d'Ivoire, Tunisia, China, Iran, Jordan, Australia, New Zealand.

yeah it's the exact same list as before, but now it's official

China completed the three-game Sino-Australian Basketball Challenge on Saturday with a 92-73
In another game The Australian men's basketball team has lost 84-78 to China
Imagine what if Yao Ming is present with China !!!!

In another hand, Iran won over China in the final
IN semi fINal china was going to be lost against Lebanon unless the reffere helped them in the last 40 seconds.. the same against Jordan ..
So level isn' t as you think.. Everything has been changed.. teams are improving fastly.. maybe they need some more years to be highly competitive

I bet you if you put New zealand and Australia in a tournament , it might be different

I would stop this wildcard nonsense anyway and instead install a tournament where the best "leftovers" from all continents fight for it - if the busy schedule would allow another tournament like that.
Still I believe that both Oceanic countries would finish very high in Asian qualifiers, because China and even Iran are currently standouts in Asian basketball. The rest is not that competetive anymore.

it will be a good idea if asia and oceanic ( newzealand and australia ) played in one tournament where the first 5 or 6 qualify to WC.....

In asia we have 5 big teams China- Iran - Lebanon - Jordan and Korea
with newzealand and australia will be a competetive tournament....

                            WC 2014 :

                            Europe: 9 cards
                            Asia-Oceanic : 6 cards
                            Africa: 3 cards
                            America: 5 cards
                            Host one card

                            no wild cards

I think this is the best for WC 2014.....

                              Not competitive anymore ?
Iran beat Jordan by only 2 pts in the semi finals.
China beat Lebanon by 2 pts with a wrong whistle from the referee,if he didnt call it,it would change the result!
                              Proud to be Lebanese
