both will likely be cut, actually. according to reports, kaimakoglou is in, which means that vasiliadis, pappas and papanikolaou will be out. while i think vasiliadis should be taken over kaimakoglou, if suspensions are handed out to most of greece's front line, kaimakoglou will have to play a lot of minutes in WC and becomes more valuable than vasiliadis.

          • Calderon is missing the whole WC due to injury. Huge loss for Spain.

              People seem to think otherwise.

Ersan Ilyasova had a soft tissue damage on his nose due to a collision in the first game of Efes Pilsen Tournament, and will be rested until next week. He'll play the tournament with a mask on his face.

Without Calderon there's only rubio left to play at PG. Everyone else is either young and inexperienced and not ready for this level competition (Lull) or just not really that great (Lopez, Cabezas). Also Calderon's shooting is lethal and imo this will be what Spain will miss most as Rubio (who is great at most things) is not that much of reliable shooter.

I see Spain's chances diminishing significantly due to this loss... my opinion.

I had not heard about Ilyasova. Good thing he won't miss the tournament.

On paper, Calderon is a great fit on this Spanish team with his low-risk style of playmaking alongside two creative wing players, but he played like an old man yesterday. Unfortunately the current Calderon is just a bad replica of the 2006 version, and it has been like that for a while. Yesterday Spain outscored USA by 17 with Rubio oncourt in a little over 20 minutes, they were minus 18 with Calderon.

I'm pretty sure Llull is able to perform on a fairly high level, not sure if it's at point guard though. Rubio will likely log big minutes.

                  • The rumors are that Calderón is losing the championship and that Raül López is replacing him.

                    It's a big loss, IMO.

A lot of people in Spain are criticizing Scariolo for calling Raül now, but we need a point guard, he knows the team and he's played all year long with Scariolo so he knows the systems, besides being part of the NT last year. The other options were Cabezas, Sergio Rodríguez and Sada, but I'm with Scariolo in this one.

The biggest problem though is that he will have to get in shape in a very short period. Anyway I wouldn't expect him to play the first 2 - 3 games and then he'll play very limited time.

So Rubio will play 35 minutes per game?? I guess he is young enough to have the stamina!

Llull will have to play the point guard at first. He's used to it in Real Madrid, but he hasn't really played there in the NT.

Anyway, it will have to be enough at the beginning, at least

They both had their chance in the NBA and they weren't that good. They are good players, Vroman played in Spain and he did it OK, but he wasn't among the best centers/power forwards in the league. They could certainly success in Europe, but maybe the passport plays against them.
