We deserved that respect as we shaped modern basketball the way you know it today. As you can see we are on the way to dominate again. Referees make mistakes, nothing you can do about it.

Most of the national teams are heavily influenced by the Serbian (ex Yugoslav) system established in the 60s. The Spanish team being the best example.
While Serbs had obviously a great team at that time it is pretty obvious that in 1995 Liths would have won the gold if refs would have been neutral.

Many people consider that final to be one of the greatest steals of all time (and not just Lithuanians) because how bad refs were and how clearly they supported Serbs (Yugoslavia). Its bit sad because that even overshadowed the great individual performance of Djordjevic back then.

50pts against european champions Tracer Milano in 1987

Hey guys, Galis turned 50 yesterday, so I thought about putting up a game where he scored 50 points. There you go then. Aris-Tracer (Philips) Milano back in ...

Thing is that he did that in *every* game. In his last season in then equivalent of Euroleague and at the age of 38 he still finished #1 in points, #1 in %FG, #1 in assists playing for a Final Four team. The European basketball hasn't witnessed such scoring dominance since him and this is no exaggeration.

PS: There was an great clip of him scoring 45pts in the 1989 Eurobasket semifinal against Soviet Union, unfortunately it is blocked. Instead, here is a clip of Galis playing with Larry Bird in the 1979 NCAA All Star Game!

My favourite Galis video is this, his passing skills:

The fact that Nick Galis was great at passing, was allways overshadowed by his relentless scoring, which is rather unfair for him. Galis was a superb point g...

My favourite pass on the video at 23 secs.

If you compare achievements and trophies, no doubt Gasol has more. And noone here is saying that he's an "unimportant" player. Quite the contrary!

But comparing head-to-head 2 entirely different players playing at different times/teams/positions etc. is as productive as the Maradona vs. Pele rivalry. When you figure the first one out, come and resolve the galis vs. gasol. But until then, there are more useful things to be said...
    -Dirk.

Pau had a taste of that vs GErmany in 2005

Pau Gasol is clearly better than gallis. i want to see gallis in a NBA final against Boston Celtics
Wait for a couple of years because Galis is too young. Are you kidding us here?
    Oh boy .
Ok i have to admit Pau Gasol is the best human ever did sports on this planet.
Or maybe he is the apostle of God not even a human.
Spain is the land of God and many are called, but few are chosen.. Spaniards.
Is it so damn difficult to understand that everyone has his own preferences.
    Maradona,Pele,ZIdane,Van Basten........
    Gausol,Jordan,Petrovic,Kukoc,Galis....
Different players, different eras, differenet teams different accomplishments.
And at the end of the day even if Pau did an amazing career in NBA he never really was a leader of a poor skilled team and lead them to the top.
Of course Galis did not try his career in NBA.But once he leaded his team in a victory against the first Dream Team ever appeared, just before the US team,I mean the Yugoslavia at the end of 80s.
Radivoi Korac,Alexander Belov ........never played in NBA.
And Pele never played in Europe.
    So what???

That's a quite extended myth, but I disagree. It was like that the first years, but he had very good teams every time he won the ring. The Bulls finished 2nd in the NBA without Jordan in 93/94 season, with a 55 - 27 mark. Certainly not a bad team.

Saying Pau Gasol is better than him is:

    1. Out of context, as these players belong to completely different eras.

    2. Ignorant, as Galis was one of a kind.

    I agree with point one.

Regarding point two, you must be right, since Gasol is a regular player. Only that he is tall and has been lucky to be in good teams.

I can't believe I was so upbeat and friendly when I voted. The closer we get to the tournament, one thing's for sure.

I would love it if the Greeks completely fell flat on their face.

I really like US national team.
The best moments i can recall, are exactly from that team.
I do not dislike Spain, because they are the best in Europe.
But i still support my birth-country Greece ,even though i do not live there.
And btw one gold in Eurobasket is not a strong tradition( even Greeks with their ''poor'' tradition have 2 golds) .
Spain during the last years have a top basketball team and by far the best football team.
No need to insult other countries and nations.
I guess you never saw Galis playing and there is no meaning into comparing him with Pau.
    Different eras different players.
