This is why many people think Eurobasket is a better tournament than World Cup.

It used to be. Now they have started watering down that tournament as well. That’s why Olympics 12 team tournament is the best.

This 32 teams system is stupid. Make it 24 and cut 6 teams out of Africa/Asia and 2 out of Americas/Europe.

Absolutely. I can even live with 16. These lower quality teams have their continental tournaments and really don’t belong on the world stage.

Unfortunatelly, that is not going to happen. 24 was a good number, because with 16 you had a number of good European teams that would regularly miss the tournament. With 24, you had everything: all the medal contenders present, and a couple of exotic teams. But this is ridiculous, there will be so many blowouts during the first round.

This is the result of FIBA trying to popularize basketball worldwide, in countries where basketball is less popular/of the lower level., while undermining the popularity in the countries where basketball is on a higher level/more popular. That's what they done to the qualifiers and now are doing to the WC. It's gonna bite FIBA in the ass eventually.

Well of course this was gonna be the case.32 teams are a lot even for football let alone basketball where the disparity is even bigger. But it seems to be a trend in every competition. The more the better the more money. In UEFA european championship it has come to a point where half the continent qualifies.

UEFA at least has enough class to make that and keep competition competitive enough

no.Last euro was an embarassement with a ton of crappy teams like N.Ireland,Hungary,Albania that had no place there otherwise. But the nature of soccer as a sport makes for some more competitive if low quality games.

It wasn't an embarassement as this FIBA World Cup is getting, not even close

                        Best 10 Europe countries,best 6 American,5 assian/okean,best 3 african countries

That would be real world cup tournament, now like 60% of first round games are unwatchable because huge level diffrence.

Round 2 where real games starts + couple good groups in first round. But watch how Serbia or Italy beating somebody literally by 50 is not fun at all,it's like football world cup game would end in 8-0.

Sport without drama element looses everything.

We already have the Olympics as a serious tournament for the elite teams, there's no point in having a second tournament with the same teams. The WC is enjoyable as a fun festival of basketball that provides some fresh matchups and gives a taste of the world stage to teams that can't qualify for the Olympics, like the Philippines or Cote d'Ivoire or Canada. I say expand it to 48 teams next time.
Why not just make it like the Eurobasket where teams are divided into Division A or B. Whoever does well in Division B gets promoted to A and vice versa.

You don't have to be Serbia or Italy, some random European teams like Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Georgia, Sweden...would own this group.
Due to his elegance and imagination, Mirza Delibasic was one of the continent's greatest ever players.
