I think Jovic will be one of the best young players at the World Cup. That could be one of benefits from this tournament, even if we fail to make deep playoff run.
Good things happen when he has ball in his hands, also Bogdan becomes way more dangerous with Jovic's gravitiy and playmaking. It puts additional stress on opposing defense.

By his own will, apparently. Officially, personal reasons. Whatever that truly means. But it's a fact that he is completely out of shape and leaving the team at this moment might have something to do with that.

Nedovic is an amazing player. In my opinion, there was enough time for him to regain his shape. 2 weeks ago he had stated that he wanted to play to the serbian national team so as to show that he deserves to be among the top players in Serbia. I didn't expect at all this outcome at all.

The way things are developing Topic might just end up in the final roster. Smailiagic is also rumored to be out due to illness. With Nedovic being out too, I don't see why Topic wouldn't make it. His role won't be game changing and he probably wouldn't even play outside of garbage time, but to have most talented guard in our country in the final roster of senior NT has many positive aspects. I know that Danilovic was in the roster of senoir team as an 18 y.o. youngster, and I can't remember who else besides him. Anyway, with all these problems, integrating a talent like Topic can't be a bad thing, especially in the long run. In fact, it's way more fun and exciting to watch talents like Jovic, Topic already in the roster. With addition of Petrusev who I think will offer a lot in the long run. Pesic said the other day about Topic that if he continues to improve like this he is going to be a serious candidate for Olympics, if we get there. Good thing is Topic will get more experience with NT next year during qualification windows for Eurobasket. What I don't like is this kid has been moved around a lot this year, and maybe a little break would do him good. On the other hand, it's a unique opportunity to practice with Bogdanovic for couple of weeks and probably make a debut for senior team against Puerto Rico in a few days.

Pesic really likes Jovic and said all good things about him. Extremely talented with great work ethic. Pesic will give him a lot of minutes, quite possibly as a starter. We need his size, agresiveness, scoring and playmaking when attacking the basket. Definitely our future at forward spot and might already be a key player for our chances at the World Cup.

I've come across fun fact that the last time Serbian team played in a complete roster was at 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

              Micic, Jaramaz, Nedovic
              Lucic, Kalinic, Pokusevski
              Jokic, Mitrovic, (Smailagic)

At least 5 of these players would have been in the roster for the World Cup. From year to year we can't find any continuity because we keep playing with drastically different roster each year for the last 5 years basically. Our Federation has to address this issue very urgently and find a way to make a consistent base of players willing to play for NT. Preparations are short, there is no enough time to really gel as a team, so having consistent base of players for the next Olympic cycle will help a lot to overcome short time of preparations and be more ready for tournamnets. This way we are forced to always change the way how we want to play and improvise a lot each year.

2002 team seemed pretty much complete. But in truth I think it’s extremely difficult or borderline impossible to have your best possible 12 players on a roster at any given time. In my opinion the goal for every National team is to have their A team. I define an A team as one that theoretically or on paper can’t be surpassed by team made up of players not included. Therefore this year’s Serbian team is not an A team since you can put together a team with the players you mentioned above that would be stronger on paper.

                  2002 team was missing Rebraca

Sure, it's impossible to have the best possible roster at every competition, but it's still strange that we haven't been able to bring all the best since 1996.

This team might surprise and they have a shot since the draw has been favorable to our side of bracket, but I would also be very happy if we get a few new names for the future like Jovic, Petrusev and hopefully Smailagic. That could be the silver lining of this depleted roster.

You didn't call Stojaković to the national team in 1996. So, you didn't bring all the best

Stojakovic was only 19 at that time and certainly not the kind of player he would become later, especially during early 2000's, so I don't think he was among the best players in the country at that moment.

By the way, Peja's son Andrej looks to be very talented with lethal shooting stroke like his dad, and he is close to choose to play for Greece. You might solve your shooting problems soon enough

1998: Stojakovic scores 3 point shot for PAOK 1 sec before the end of the game and Olympiakos out of the greek league finals

Smailagic is also out, as well as Trifunovic. So, this is our team:

G: Bogdanovic, Guduric, Avramovic, Marinkovic, S. Jovic
                          F: N. Jovic, Dobric, Davidovac
                          C: Milutinov, Petrusev, Ristic

Only one dilemma, who is going to take the 12th spot - Topic, Radanov or Simanic. I would definitely like to see Topic taking the last spot, but I wouldn't mind Radanov because he brings defensive versatility even though he can't shoot to save his life. It's also strange that he is the only player who didn't get a single second during preparation games so far. Considering that S. Jovic is coping with injury too (what a surprise LOL) that kid Topic might end up as third PG on this team. Very difficult situation, we got to the point where we don't even know if we can get 12 healthy players. It looks like 'last man standing' philosophy, just like at Eurobasket 2017.

Not much to take from this game vs Puerto Rico, probably good to build some confidence.

One thing is clear though, Stefan Jovic will be incredibly important for this team, a real point guard and we finally saw some p&r action from primary a capable ballhandler such as Jovic.

The other Jovic continues to showcase his skillset and build his reputation. Entire Serbian fan base is in love with his game and view him as an upgraded version of Bjelica. 11/7/5/1 in effortless fashion, such great basketball instincts and natural ability to find his teammates off the dribble and setting them up for wide open threes. He bulked up and got better defensively bug time. Such a menace in transition. He is already number one option at PF and that is going to stay for a long time. Maybe he is too young and inexperienced to embrace such role right now, but he will be ready in the near future. A perfect modern PF with great scoring and passing ability. One of the best young talents at this World Cup.

Now, some milestones worth to be remembered - Bogdanovic made his 100th appearance with NT, and Nikola Topic made his debut He was nervous but managed to throw couple of highlight passes already - great kickout pass for an open three for Simanic, then super calm fake in the crowd for an open layup, and a great p&p game with Ristic leaving him wide open. Also wasnt afraid to get into contact and drew a few free throws. I am all in for him to take the 12th spot but Pesic will probably opt out for more experienced player. Time works for him, this is already super satisfying for this season.

Another important thing that I hoped Pesic will see through is that Petrusev will be the first big off the bench for Milutinov, and then he will take some time at PF as well. That is good, Ristic has obvious weaknesses to be up to task against tougher competition, so more minutes and bigger role for Petrusev is needed and will be beneficial. We basically have 8-9 men rotation when tough gets going, and I guess that is good enough with clear and defined roles for everybody.

Two more prep games, the one vs Brazil will be interesting.
