  • Barons club's new name ''Barons/LMT''

Armands Šķēle and two of the new Barons cheerleaders holding next year's Barons jersey

New Barons club generalsponsor will be LMT (Latvian mobile phone) company. They were their sponsor last year too but this year they become general-sponsor and signed the deal for 2 years and because of it Barons changed the name a little bit. LMT previously was the generalsponsor of Brocēni (Skonto) team which was latvian champion some years ago but they haven't been basketball team's sponsor since last year when they signed with Barons.By the way Barons team's jerseys will be made by ''And1''.

Barons prezident also said that they hope that young people whom were given Barons EXTRA CARDS will come so Arena Riga will not be empty.

Barons extra card (larger version, of course)

Barons budget is approx. 1 mio lats (1.3 mio euros). Skirmants can't play for a month because his injury is more serious then they thought and Barons coach Vētra was very surprised that injured player was considered as NT candidate and had trainings there so he couldn't be with Barons club. Barons beat BK Cēsis by +75 in their last friendly game.

    "Barons/LMT" - "Dalkia/Nybit" 87:45 (24:17, 19:6, 16:15, 28:7)

    "Barons/LMT": Marshall 15, Jeromanovs 13+5 AB, Šķēle 12+5 PB, Maceina 11, Rich 9, Bērziņš 8, Kravčenko 8, Kosuškins 6, Gulbis 3, Jaunzems 2, Čunda.

It was the first game of ''Reval Hotel'' trophy. Barons won it very easy. Next games will be more difficult test. They are playing DTL EKA AEL from Cyprus and ''Dolphins'' from Sweden.

    --------------

That ASK Riga club won Neptunas 86:72 in away game

      Hi Guys

I just wanted to say hello before tomorrow's game between Barons and my team Spirou Basket (Charleroi). It's kind of hard to judge how both teams will perform tomorrow. My take is that we are going to win by a small margin (+5 or so) What's your view? What is the local press saying about the game?

      Cheers

Barons had a bad start in Baltic League and they were crushed by Dynamo Moscow region at home in FIBA so as a fan I would be very happy if Barons could win +1 game cause they aren't at very good shape (but again, the last BBL game was an improvement).
Local press- serious newspapers say that it'll be hard for Barons but most fans (as always) think that they'll win for sure.

Most fans here also think the same (the other way round of course). I do not share that super-optimism personally. I think the key for us to win is to contain Skele and Rich. From the statistics I understood Barons doesn't shoot so much from the 3 point line (17.6 attempts per game v 26.9 for Spirou). It also looks like they have a good defense but are lacking solutions in the offense. Is this a fair statement?

BG Karlsruhe hired Alton Mason (185-G-77, college: Arizona St.) for the remainder of the season. Mason has been playing professional basketball since 2001 when he started his career in Belgium. Then he played in some other European leagues, including Finland and Greece. The 29-year-old guard began the 2006-2007 season with Tofas Bursa (Turkey - TBL) but moved to Barons/LMT Riga (Latvia - LBL) in October. He averaged 17.2 ppg, 3 rpg, 2.8 apg and 2.2 spg through 5 games in the Baltic League until December, when he left the Latvian side. Mason also joined the Barons in 4 contests of the FIBA Euro Cup.
Has anyone seen him playing before and can tell me, what kind of player he is? Thx in advance

Oh, we know him, Vetra (the head coach) knows him. Vetra says ''no drugs, no beer, no mafia, no girls'' but Armands, Armands... Fans say that Barons is ''Essential'' team because Skele takes them all to night club in Latvia- called ''Essential'' the day before the game. Because of that they play so bad. But situation has improved now, Barons, Skele play better ball at the moment.

Skele is probably too lazy to achieve anything in european basketball, but it's only his fault. All in all, another player who is overrated from young age and then he is the biggest star all over the world.

But only in his own world.

But certainly this year in Barons, especially in semi-finals vs ASK was an improvement. Head coach Vetra has played in NBA, in USSR basketball team. He has an experience. Maybe not very experienced coach but tough one. As a big fan of Barons I hope next year Skele improves his game and team is better too.
