BUL - Bulgaria say good-bye to Pini
SOFIA (EuroBasket 2011) - Pini Gershon guided Bulgaria to a surprise appearance at EuroBasket 2009 in Poland.
Now the country is looking for a new coach.
Bulgaria’s Basketball Federation has announced that the Israeli boss, who is the coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, is no longer in charge of the national team.
Gershon had wanted to remain involved with Bulgaria with the aim of having another prominent coach help him and while the federation attempted to accommodate him, the right solution could not be agreed upon.
Bulgaria’s Basketball Federation president Mr. Mihail Mihov said: “We worked for two years very well with Mr Gershon. That was the reason for me, and the whole staff of the federation, to insist that Pini Gershon stay with the national team.
“But Gershon wanted to be a head of a big staff with another head coach who would take the responsibility for the preparation of the team.
“That was a good idea for us, so we agreed. He offered us Sharon Drucker, who has worked with Gershon in Maccabi Tel Aviv.
“He is a well known name in European basketball, a good specialist. We agreed with him, but Drucker declined the offer for personal reasons.
“The next suggestion of Mr Gershon was Oded Kattash.
“This suggestion didn’t fit with the ideas we had. The Bulgarian national team is not a school for coaches.
“When we last met with Pini Gershon, I asked him to take the team for another qualification cycle.
“He decided something else, so we respect his decision.”
Mihav says there is plenty of time for Bulgaria to find the right coach.
“There are nine days to the draw for EuroBasket qualifying,” he said.
“The preparatory work with the national team will start in February, the real one – in June.
“So we have a lot of time for reaction. We have some alternatives for other coaches.
“For sure, we will have a smarter and better team this year because of the work of Pini Gershon the last years. We sincerely thank him.”
After taking over at the end of 2007, Gershon led the team the following summer to a second-place finish in EuroBasket Division A, Group A, behind Serbia and ahead of Italy, Finland and Hungary.
That earned the Bulgarians a trip to EuroBasket 2009 in Poland.
At last year’s tournament, however, Bulgaria were overmatched against Group D opponents Turkey, Poland and Lithuania, losing all three games.
Gershon first became interested in the job because his grandfather was born in Bulgaria.
He told National Darik Radio: “Thanks to all people that helped me these two years in Bulgaria; the people that helped to bring success there. I love them, now I know – I have a real family in Bulgaria, real friends.
“I wish all the best for Bulgarian basketball.
“I did my best to help.
“I thought there was a lot more I could do, but sometimes you have to make a decision. If there is anyone who needs my help – I will be there for him.”

Barchovski Back For Bulgaria
Bulgaria have handed the men's national team reins back to former boss Rossen Barchovski for the next two years.
Barchovski, who had stints at the helm of Bulgaria in 1995 and 1997, and from 2004 to 2006, succeeds Pini Gershon.
Gershon led the team into EuroBasket 2009 but the Bulgarians lost their three games against Turkey, Lithuania and Poland.
Barchovski served as the head coach of the Bulgarians at EuroBasket 2005 in Serbia and Montenegro.
Svetislav Pesic, the former Yugoslavia's gold-medal winning coach at EuroBasket 2001 and at the 2002 FIBA World Championship, has been working with all of the men's national teams in Bulgaria for several months and will continue to do so alongside Barchovski.
Pesic is a FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate Mentor.
"I will take all the responsibility for the national team," Barchovski said.
"We are continuing our work with Pesic. We intend to work with all the members of the national teams U20 and U18, to build one system."
Ljubomir Minchev, the head coach of Bulgaria's U18 national team, and Serbian Oliver Costic, will serve as Barchovski's assistants.
Costic is arriving from Red Star Belgrade, as will the man who will help in the strength and conditioning of the senior team, Branislav Kraevic.
The team will gather on June 14 and will eventually play numerous warm-up games before EuroBasket 2011 qualifying clashes with Belgium, Portugal, Poland and Georgia in August.

Barchovski Wants Retired Stoykov
New Bulgaria coach Rosen Barchovski is hoping to lure Todor Stoykov out of international retirement.
Barchovski didn't include the 33-year-old veteran in the 17-strong list of players that will compete for spots in the national team this summer but the coach said: "We are talking with Todor Stoykov, so there is still a possibility to have him in the team."
Stoykov averaged 12 points, two assists and 4.3 rebounds in Bulgaria's three games last year at the EuroBasket in Poland.
Americans Earl Rowland of Cremona and Jared Homan of Maroussi each figure in Barchovski's plans.
Rowland, a point guard, played last summer and averaged 17 points per contest while Homan, also 27, is a center on the books of Maroussi in Greece.
Homan was very effective for Maroussi this season in both the Euroleague and the Greek top flight.
"We will decide for each game one of them will play," the coach said.
"It depends on the team we are playing with."
An exciting development for Bulgaria will be the youngsters that are invited to take part in the preparations.
Barchovski believes there is some talent in the youth sides that will help Bulgaria in the years to come.
"I will rely on two or three boys from the under-20 team," he said.
"There are at least five boys in this team, who have the potential to play with the men.
"They are not ready yet, but they have a lot of talent, so I won't give any names now.
"We will keep them in mind and see how they play with under-20 team.
"We will use for the preparation games more players. We want to have a good team, at their best for the qualification games. In the test games we will look for wins, we have to learn to win."
Bulgaria Preliminary Squad: Nikolay Varbanov (Lukoil Academic), Krum Doychinov (Euroins Cherno more), Jared Homan (Marusi), Stefan Georgiev (Levski), Vesselin Filchev (USA), Kaloyan Ivanov (Manresa), Atanas Radev (Balkan), Deyan Ivanov (Montegranaro), Hristo Nikolov (Lukoil Academic), Pavel Marinov (Yambol), Zlatin Georgiev (Levski), Chavdar Kostov (Lukoil Academic), Ivan Lilov (Balkan), Filip Videnov (Jeleznik), Alexander Gruev (Rilski sportiest), Asen Velikov (Levski), EJ Rowland (Cremona).
(Three more unnamed players from U20 team will participate in the camp.)
