  • Ltu fans on forums are double faces when Lithuania beat americans most of them were celebrating and repeating ofcourse we should beat everyone and only weak chooses easier roads

After LTU literally had no chance againts very strong Serbian NT now they are singing diffrent song how those morons coaches and players didnt see how strong Serbia is and how average Italians are

Everyone is smart after we know results and what already happend

I believe this NT 2023 overachieve and only because of super lucky draw possibly we couldnt have ended in semifinal

But objectively this 2023 NT was nowhere near top 4, even Kazlauskas teams wasnt getting such lucky draws looking objectively how elite NTs was forced play each other in other groups

Even usually critical Kleiza and all other podcasters saw how far away our NT was from Serbia in every aspect of the game in 1/4 and just said good words about this team that gave everything they had , gave real hope of possible miracle to ltu people and did that playing beautiful basketball style

Reading how Giedraitis,Grigonis plays friendly games at same time when lower level lkl players is doing everything they can facing Americans and Serbs leaves bad taste in my mouth.

    • Serbs lost kidney, but gained lots of comradery. Bendzius' injury destroyed rotations that worked so well. Doesn't really explain defence

So after their big victory two days ago they just didn't focus with the required intensity on today's game against Serbia. Lack of either focus or intensity is always fatal.
Now admittedly I missed the game because it was being played in the middle of the night Toronto time and I've still not been able to watch the complete game. Highlight clips are almost entirely based on successful scoring plays and therefore reveal only a small part of the story.

Studying as much of the stat sheets as I can find though reveals that the "emotional exhaustion" explanation is a bit too pat and tells only a part of the story. Had the Lithuanian team been that entirely drained, it would have been evident in the first quarter. But Team Lietuva came out of the first quarter with a 25-24 lead. However Team Lietuva then scored only a piddling 43 points in the last three quarters of the game! Contrast that with the 110 points scored the previous game against the Americans playing their standard shopworn NBA man-on-man defence with switching.

So what kind of defensive adjustments did the Serbian team make roughly at the start of the second quarter to completely shut down the Lithuanian offence? Did they go to some sort of modified zone defence with one of their big lumberjacks guarding the paint down low and four players policing the perimeter? The fact that Lithuania's most prolific three point shooter Eimantas Bendžius was out with injury would have helped Serbia succeed with such a defence.

In any event Team Lietuva didn't lose the game because of a porous defence. They just couldn't score against the Serbians' defence after the first quarter. So what were the Serbians doing? What kind of defensive sets did they employ after the ten minute mark?

          • Though the announcer doesn't say so what it really amounts to is that with the NBA standard defence the U.S. was employing each American player was running around like a chicken with its head cut off on defence. And Coach Maksvytis had created offensive sets to take advantage of precisely that very predictable defence from which the U.S. team never varied.

The Serbs though did different on defence, a lot different.

his overall stats might not look that bad, but defensively, in the first half at least, he was horrible.

Vaidas Kariniauskas had an excellent tournament indeed.

I'm wondering now though who's in line to compete with him for the backup PG slot next summer? Lukas Lekavičius is a real liability on defence because of his lack of size, Augustas Marčiulionis is unseasoned and hasn't demonstrated that he can shoot, Žygimantas Janavičius is already in the twilight of his career, so who? Arnas Velička? Velička though has yet to show that he can do something in qualifying windows and he'll need to step up in the 2023-24 qualifiers.

                          • Zagars - 17 assists, Lithuania - 11 assists. I'm not sure if i've seen smth like this. It's been a great WC for a Nevezis player and for a whole Latvian team. I wanted a foreign head coach for a Lith team after the last EC and here you are - a great example from Latvia.

It's also one of the most disappointing summers. All the NTs (youth including) disappointed even if most of them (except U18) showed a good basketball at first. But then they collapsed. That's the least to say.

Well today's ass kicking certainly took the bloom off the rose. So much for being able to say that this was indeed a very good team that just happened to meet the wrong team (the gold medal winners?) at the exact wrong time in the QF.

I wonder though. Backup PG Vaidas Kariniauskas was out sick (not even on the bench). Sounds like something he ate disagreed with him, i.e. food poisoning. I wonder if the rest of the team was afflicted as well with more minor cases? They played that way. Hopefully it wasn't the case that they'd simply annihilated themselves the previous evening in various Manila bars to congratulate themselves on a good tournament and were all badly hungover. Has anybody heard anything?

And of course sniper Eimantas Bendžius being out with injury for three games now and Ignas Brazdeikis hurting himself at the start of the third quarter left the team seriously short handed.

Yes. Kariniauskas by himself had ten assists against Slovenia a couple days ago so today's numbers were shocking.
