  • Interesting that Buzelis defensively is the most productive Igintes prospect ever. More productive than Kuminga and others. Offensively he's 4th most productive, but I think he still probably has the highest potential offensively, or second highest after Jalen Green.

Buzelis ceiling is not easy projected and pretty mysterious. He's somewhat high risk, high award prospect when it comes to lottery picks. I think comparison with Franz is the best, but Franz had higher floor than Matas, but I think Matas ceiling might be even slightly higher than Franz. In my opinion Buzelis has transcendent qualities that are a bit rigid, but very reliable in Franz case.

He surely will need to get stronger and that's the moment which is always tricky. I hope he won't overdo and do it gradually. Valanciunas fucked it up big time in his first off season of NBA. IDK what was he thinking. He lost 30% if his craftiness and agility with taking too much weight on.

I don't know how good Matas will look in NBA. He'll be good, IMO, but to what extent is unclear ATM. I would say he's somewhere from 4th to 2nd option of NBA team in his prime for a winning team (most likely legit third option like the same Franz I think, more or less). But what I like about him that he's a good player to play next Sabonis and overall reflects LTU BB school well cause he's not a ball stopper, not a ballhog, he reads the game, he plays off the ball both defensively and offensively, he's smart and unselfish and willing to do a little bit of everything. That's Lithuanian school. And yet he does possess the ability to be a go to guy and elite ISO presence at the same time. He won't be Hezonja (young one) or Musa or god help Jordan Poole - meaning a silly chuckers. Matas has high IQ and tends to be useful in all situations. He's very active off ball defender. That's important when you play with defensively liable Sabonis. If we will have Marciulionis (or Jakucionis), D. Giedraitis, Buzelis, Sedekerskis next to Sabonis in 2028 Olympics f.e., we will have 4 plus defenders next Sabonis and you still have at least 2 world class offensive players in that unite. Buzelis three point shooting will be a key though. Next Sabonis you need good shooters/active off ball players and capable defenders and guy like Buzelis might exactly bring that.

I think next Sabonis the best players to play will be Jakucionis (Marciulionis a little bit passive off ball offensively), Buzelis, Sedekerskis. They all can shoot (well, Sedekerskis only open, but that's enough), all active off ball (cutting offensively) at both ends and all can play D (all guys are good help defenders which is very important playing next Sabonis). I'm hopeful that next Olympic cycle we can have all we need for big wins. We don't even need Buzelis to be primarily ball handler as our elite PGs + Sabonis will create more than enough facilitation already. I would say we just need to put Buzelis into situations where he can attack close outs aggressively and in these situation he's literally unstoppable and sometimes to ask some pure ISO game when the game becomes rigid and you need an individual talent to close the games. This season he already made some game winners and showed the ability to make tough shots.

From 2027 WC Buzelis should be ready to be one of top 3-4 main NT players and likely to lead the NT with Sabonis as best players in 2028 Olympics. That's when I'll ask medals without any drag up. There's a little chance he shows up earlier though, it seems.

Here's terrific scouting on Buzelis with video coverage:

Between his size and skill, G League Ignite prospect Matas Buzelis looks like a big money player! Maxwell breaks down his game. PLUS: Weber State vs. Eastern Washington in MMGOTW and Quick Hits!

    • Buzelis very likely at 23 will make debut in 2027 NT ( if he will become real deal). For every Wagner there is hundred similiar look players 2m04+ that never becomes even close to that

Sabonis and Buzelis have 8 year diffrence, untill Buzelis will be ready Sabonis will be in his 30s

Sabonis main helpers in olympic cycle 2025-2028 will come from 1998-2002 born players.

Buzelis (if he will become a real player) in fiba tournaments as game changing player should start after 2028 Olympics.

Dont see Sabonis and Buzelis paths crossing more than 1-2 fiba tournaments.

Kleiza and Valanciunas had 7 years diffrence and played only 2 summers together.

      • Yeah, most likely we'll see Sabonis (still very good one, being 30 and 31yo) playing with Buzelis (probably already pretty good being 23 and 24yo) only in 2 tournaments - 2027 and 2028. There's certain chance to see them together playing in 2029 EB, but much less compared to 2 previous tournaments.

If not Kleiza's collapsed knee, he could be brilliant in 2015 still being 30yo. In that tournament JV played well so it could be pretty big (as well as LTU missed D-Mo who's back collapsed). That's an amazing losses of talent for such small country as LTU. Also we could do much better in 2016 Olympics if both Kleiza and D-Mo were healthy.

To biggest extent our second part of 10's was so bleak because we lost Kleiza and Motiejunas. Kleiza's shooting and scoring would compensate the lack of guards to certain extent. Specially remembering that Kalnietis was 18/7.5 in Olympics..

Hopefully we will avoid injuries in 20s and early 30s. Losing Buzelis f.e. would basically mean the same as losing Kleiza for 10's stretch.

        • I like how LTU has at least 2-3 guys who can be defensive playmakers. That's Marciulionis, Buzelis and Jakucionis.

Here's the definition of the term:

Much like their offensive counterparts, defensive playmakers are adept at controlling the action around them to maximize each possession and prevent the other team from running their sets effectively

I think we used to have prime Maciulis (2015) as defensive playmaker. He not only guarded his own man, but he was in charge gluing all the defense and controlling a lot of space defensively. To certain extent Butkevicius did that as well.

          D. Giedraitis is more of an ISO elite defender. He glues to one guard and just tries to kill him. Marciulionis on the other hand can come out from nowhere with his long strong arms and either rip the ball out or block the shot. The same way Buzelis in some possessions can control all the defence and to get where he has to get defensively to disrupt opponents offense. That's defensive play making. Sedekerskis sometimes do it too, even though his defensive presence is not perfect in team effort. Like it wouldn't be enough Jakucionis tends to play make defensively too. He's scanning whole defensive picture and goes fro reach outs. Here's the examples of Buzelis being defensive playmaker:

            • This while Buzelis' interview was fun, awkward and dramatic At first he was implicit and cocky, and at the end more explicit and humble. Too bad he didn't elaborate what role Maksvytis envisioned for him. I get that there's little hope to see him this year, but I like how he always says I'll do whatever the coach will ask from be when was asked how he envisions himself after 10 years. That's humble answer.

This tournament of his name in LTU is nice even if a bit pre-mature thought. Imagine he gets some career changing injury. He didn't create his own legacy yet as JV or Domas. On other hand, he's a young LTU BB prodigy, so even from that standpoint he can tell and show a lot, so all good and off course nice initiative:

              • Here's 19min Buzelis season highlights - scoring, passing, defense. I have to say I'm most impressed with defense. Not because it's more flashier or better than offense, but because Lithuania so rarely has shot blockers. Buzelis blocks 2,7 shots per game in his last 8 games. Buzelis stays with opponents, has very active hands and he leaps quick from too feet and has great timing. That's make him one intriguing defender with his length. I like how he reads the D all the time looking how to play make defensively. He's monitoring all the court.

Offense is smooth, most importantly he can get inside with the ball in his hand in many ways and has mid range game. I'm not worried about his three. He will be at least decent shooter. From Buzelis I want legit ISO presence down the line when the ball is hot. He has it already basically with his high level finishing inside and mid range scoring. I don't want to see threes when the game is on a line. Kalnietis used to gamble with this too much. It's not a reliable way to make game winners. You have to go nearer the basket. Lay up is perfect, mid range shot or floater is second most reliable. Buzelis has it.

Passing must be tighten up eventually if he want to be elite at it, but we won't even need him to master of passing as I said when we have so many capable passing guards and even centers.

In 2024 he would face issues with physicality, even though as I said I believe he should be already more impactful than R. Giedraitis, Sirvydis, Dimsa and such role players, but already from 2025 he would be a real force, IMO. In 2027 he should be ready to be the most impactful player overall I think, even more than Sabonis cause Buzelis has much more defense and his offense should translate to FIBA better than Sabonis does (with that said we need much more from Domas than he showed yet).

                • Buzelis in the draft officially. It's crazy how many responses he got just with this move. From LTU perspective, definitely the craziest draft year since 2011. Depending on which team will draft him, we may see or not see him in Olympics. 20yo franchise player material. I would be stunned to see any glimpse of what he's got. Definitely reserving a spot for him if he comes.

In 2011 when JV and D-Mo were drafted it looked a big shift for LTU basketball, but it was false hope. Hopefully Buzelis story will be much more impactful. And there's still a chance to see a bucket Rubstavicius being drafted.

                  • Latest take on Buzelis from workouts. He's filling out. Not like becoming fatass, far from that, but like he adds lean muscle. He will be so hard to contain on his drives and attacking close out. That length, that mobility, that skill, and explosiveness. Deadly, IMO.

I'm still not high on his shot, just hope he will be solid. Mechanics is not really my taste, but he was shooting 44% in his last highschool season.

Nevertheless that explosive going to the rim, versatile skill...He will be a beast. Specially that he seems to be very eager to progress:

                    • For Buzelis Spurs at 4 would be great. Pop I think has the mentality to develop players attitude well. Plus, there's Songaila who would help. I don't entirely buy the idea that Risacher is better prospect than Buzelis. Better shooter, sure, but he doesn't have Buzelis game with the ball and likely is less versatile defender. Hope Spurs comes fro Buzelis:

“If Risacher doesn’t fall to the Spurs, Buzelis would be a very nice option for them,” Rooney wrote. “He has a similar skillset and can do a little bit of everything. The length the Spurs would have on the floor between him and Wemby could create a lot of problems for opposing teams. He is versatile on offense, though his ball handling could be more consistent. Defensively, he’s capable of guarding multiple positions. He won’t be a top option offensively early in his career, but his catch-and-shoot ability gives him quite the upside.

“Plus, giving Gregg Popovich the chance to develop Buzelis seems like a great fit.”

                      • Buzelis and Sarr are treated as highest upside players in 2024 drafts. And I agree. I actually think Matas has the highest upside if his perimeter skills will translate well to the NBA and he will become something between Franz and...well, KD. Sarr has probably even more impressive defensive upside, but he has no perimeter skills of Matas and perimeter skills are the king skill today.

I hope Matas won't end up with Pistons though. Be it Spurs, Bulls or Wizards is all good I think. Pistons...not so much...

Me I like the Detroit Pistons. I'm also rather fond of the San Antonio Spurs. I don't like any teams based in Washington though and I've been a hated enemy of the Chicago Bulls since 1990 or so. (It's the Chicago Blackhawks I really like!)
