Just don't play Calathes and Walkup together, if Giannis plays. Giannis doesn't need 2 playmakers on the court with him, he needs as many shooters as possible.

I would for sure play Toliopoulos more than 17 minutes. But more importantly time distribution should be different. You should play as little minutes possible with all Papagiannis/Giannis/Calathes/Walkup together on the court. That quartet together can't work.

Or maybe you can pray for Calathes and Walkup having great shooting night. It can happen, but it's not very likely to happen.

    • It was clear that Spanoulis didnt trust Toliopoulos at all in the crunch time. I also consider it a mistake but I can understand his thoughts.

They say national teams are not like clubs where you can choose the player you need. Well, not entirely true. The naturalisation option gives you one such player. Walkup is not the right man for the team with Giannis.

It’s not that Greece doesn’t have shooters. It does. It just that it lacks one or two pure shooters which can loosen up the team. I.e. Sloukas and Dorsey.
Perhaps Sloukas opting out last minute was bad for the team. I think a Sloukas Walkup combo would not have been bad. But the rivalry has poisoned that.

Also, playing just three games against such competition is tough. Hard to gain momentum and get the shooters to roll.

That said, you never know when they have their day. Because

And that's why not having Calathes might benefit Spanoulis.

I agree totally, except about that's hard for shooters to roll. It's hard if Calathes/Walkup/Papagiannis/Giannis play 115 minutes, a lot of the time together. It's far the worse shooting lineup in the whole tournament, you need a little miracle for that lineup to work and have good shooting night.

I don't follow closely Greek team, but why Mitoglou is not getting more minutes instead of Papagiannis, when Giannis is on the court?

Mitoglou doesn’t seem to be in top shape either. Let’s not forget. Greece’s opponents are The European Champions, WC Bronze medalists, and Olympics Bronze Medalists.

So the weaknesses of this great Greek team show more easily. Ofcourse, against these teams Greece will miss its pure shooters. And it will show.
The mere fact that Greece is still in the race is a miracle.

              • I don't think that Spannoulis has many options he have not yet used. Toliopoulos already gets a lot of minutes and crucial shots. He could have given Charalampopoulos some more minutes I think but this would have not drastically affect the outcome of the two games. It is like it is. Greek players apart from Giannis have less individual talent than the opponent players.

I wouldnt even say that Giannis is very talented but it does not matter how you score. He is a freak of nature. How can you play two intense games almost without taking a break within two games and still dominate? Well, at least against Spain he showed that he is still human

                  • Unfortunately I had to watch the games live on my mobile phone while lying under the umbrella on the beach with limitead mobile data volume and bad light conditions. Now that I could watch them at home on a big screen and with a calm head, I have to say that the Greeks play nice and are fun to watch. The only point is that Canada and Spain played even better. Lets hope for a miracle tomorrow. May god blind all Australian players at least temporarily for 2.5 hours.

Who's forcing you to be under umbrella?

The real question is in which time zone he was in order to be under an umbrella at both games against Canada and Spain..?

At some point I asked this very question to myself. The gangsters in Sardgena Italy take 40€ to 80€ for the umbrella and two sun loungers excluding any drink. In mainland Greece you pay for a Frappe or Freddo and you get the umbrella for free. In southern Crete we paid 10€ without any drink. In Korfu we paid 10€ including one drink. But what should I do? I inherited my blonde mother's light sensitive skin.

You got me! I bought the box with 15 bottles of 0,66l Ichnusa beer from Lidl at the first day. Maybe thats the reason why I did not get much from the Canada game. This beer is the only valid reason to visit Sardegna. Apart from that I cannot recommend Sardegna. Greek islands are equally beautiful and maybe even more beautiful but muuuuuuuuuuch muuuuuucch cheaper. And you get Frappe and Freddo while in Sardegna you only get Shakerato which is below standard.

In case we we loose today I wll be able to ease my pain with good German beer. Maybe Krombacher or Vertlins oder maybe I buy some Koelsch.

10 euros in greek islands?? Maybe you remember this happening many years ago..
This year in Patmos island, 30 euros for the umbrella and two sunbeds.
Don't ask the prices in islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Paros etc..
But I wouldn't prefer any other summer destination than greek islands

I was last year in Crete. The Korfu price is indeed from pre Corona times. Mykonos I did not like much. Santorini I have never visited. But I fell in love with Naxos. Umbrella cost 10 € last time I visited.
