  • NBA Europe

Recently there are increasing rumors than the NBA is thinking about initiating a league in Europe.

What do you think about this possibility?

Given the endless FIBA, Euroleague divide. I say go for it.
This divide has been corrosive to European basketball. Perhaps we need some new air.

Who knows, there might be some current top EL teams, like Real Madrid, Panathinaikos, Barcelona, Fenerbah

the EL is currently a quasi-farm-league for the NBA any way. If a player shines, he's gone. and then he's back when he's discarded.

Unless they plan to make it a fully farm-league, calling up and sending back players every 2-3 weeks, I don't see much downside, at least for now. They could teach EL management some marketing and organization skills.

Seems that it is confirmed by Garbajosa. NBA is going to start a league in collaboration with FIBA. Hope this goes smoothly and finally ends this rift in European basketball.

Because no fan from those countries will pay €100 per game and then sit down on his ass and clap and shout "defense!"

I pray for this to happen only to end up being a complete flop. The unfortunate reality is that the NBA has money to throw around so they will be able to definitely attract talent away from existing competitions. It's so funny that they see how consistently bad Alba is and they thought "yeah...we should get those guys" :P

The NBA doesnt understand that clubs in Europe have a soul and faithful fans. All Armerican sports teams are plastic. Players are traded from one franchise to the other like cattle. The players have no power who they play for.

In Europe, we first brought the game to the the spectators but never considered selling them anything more than the match ticket to pay the players fees. All you had to eat was maybe outside the stadium some sunflower seeds and roasted chestnuts when it was cold.

It's funny they are trying to tap the UK market where they don't give a shit about basketball. The English have many of their own sports. This will be a massive flop.

Fans in Europe don't follow players. They follow the clubs they grew up with.

EuroLeague's structure and financial setup make it tough to compete directly. Without big TV deals and better salaries, top European talent will keep leaving for bigger contracts in the US.
