When the F4 was in Athens (2007) I immediately ran to volunteer with the organization that was running the show (I think it was the sport dept. of the city of Athens, I don't remember). I was thinking that I would be able to weasel my way into the stadium for free. So when it was time to pick what responsibilities each of us would have, I picked the airport. I was going to welcome teams, reporters etc. My thought process was that by the time the actual games started, whoever was to arrive would have already arrived by then so I could just enter OAKA and do nothing and enjoy the game.
So one day, the cheerleaders would arrive. From the group that worked the airport I was the only young guy, surrounded by old ladies and the occasional middle aged man. So they concluded that it was only appropriate that I would welcome the cheerleaders and show them to the bus and stuff. Btw, the cheerleaders were from Zalgiris so 20 year old me was incredibly excited because at the time the "eastern European" look of the blue eyes blonde girl that I had in my mind was also "my type". I mean many years later I also married a blonde woman with green eye so who knows? Maybe it never went away.
Anyway, as I said I was super excited. I was telling all of my friends how awesome it was going to be and how I'll def get one of them to go out with me. Yes yes, we're talking high levels of delusion. Then everything goes to shit. Literally. The previous day I guess I ate something weird so I woke up that day with food poisoning symptoms. I'm talking the whole deal of puking and shitting at the same time
But I wasn't gonna let some pesky illness rob me of my fantasy so I soldiered through, gobbled up Imodium as if it was candy, and showed up at the airport to greet the cheerleaders.
Now, in my mind I'm nailing it. Smiling, making small talk, the whole thing. But bro...thinking about it some years later I was like "there is no way these girls weren't super uncomfortable" I still cringe a bit thinking about it. I can still remember how I was trying so hard to keep it together that there is no way in hell I wasn't painful to interact with.
Anyway, BIG OOF.
There is a good ending though, my plan worked exactly as initially conceived. The day of the games, I waltzed into OAKA with no job to do and watched the games from floor level, celebrating in the end
