  • Darussafaka 2015-16 Official Appreciation Thread

    Darussafaka_basketball_logo.png

Given all the recent discussion of this squad it makes sense to provide a space where we can fully reflect, understand and appreciate the significance of this team and their impact on European basketball.

Darussafaka finished the 2015-16 campaign with an overall 9-15 record but that by no means tells the whole story. This was a big budget team that was determined to make a splash in their debut season in the Euroleague. After successfully qualifying from Group D (at the expense of Maccabi) in the regular season they finished 6th in group E of the top 16.

    Coach: Oktay Mahmuti

    Roster:
    Arslan, Wilbekin, Yağmur, Ozdemiroglu
    Gordon, Redding, Cetin
    Preldzic, Markoishvili
    Harangody, M. Bjelica, Turen
Slaughter, Erden, Savas, Aldemir ( and Erwin Dudley- practice player only)

A post from janketa on this roster back in 2015:

Darussafaka will be mediocre team next season despite throwing milions.

I can't believe that first real pg will be Ender Arslan!!!
Maybe Gordon will play pg, but in my oppinion he is not pass first pg and not real pg, so they will have big problem with game organisation..

I like Markoishvili very much but DD need a real pg.
Rest of the team is ok but...

This is the craziest roster in the history of the Euroleague. Whoever thought bringing 15 players with the same quality is the good idea is braindead. Mahmuti as a coach...
the only player I liked was Slaughter. Imagine having Slaughter, Erden, Aldemir, Savas and Dudley at C! 5 players!!! You have so much money to spend and you bring Harangody and MILKOOOOOO Bjelica for the foreigner spots, Markoishvili who looked in 2015 like he is 45 years old...WilbeKING came during the season so they really believed at the beggining of the season that Yagmur and Arslan will cook whole Euroleague + Cetin with his shooting motion like he is throwing fridge and Preldzic with his stats every game 5 pts, 3 ass, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 turnovers...

Slaughter was a bit of a catch at the time because he'd just won the EL with Real but yeah it would be fascinating to know how much money was spent assembling this roster. They were paying Dudley a million as a practice player.
That's a scarily accurate summation of Preldzic's stats as well!

Serious question- why does Mahmuti not coach anymore? He only had a brief spell with Galatasaray after this season.

if I remember correctly, Ibrahim Kutluay was the genius behind this roster. No wonder he did not get many offers afterwards as a GM

Mahmuti also disappeared indeed. no coaching, no commentating, no appearance on media... what an experience must he have here to cool off completely.

PS. Wilbekin here, at 20 something, was so promising. I remember Efes fans were furious* at Alper Yilmaz a couple of years later who let him go to Maccabi (*until Larkin was announced)

Actually when I think a little bit more one more roster is very close with this one in the terms of the craziness. Galatasaray 16-17. Guler, Errick McCollum, Justin Dentmon, Fitipaldo and Russ Smith at PG also if I remember correctly Pleiss, Tyus, Arar and one more foreigner at C. Austin Daye, Schilb, Micov were also in the team...so many players that needed minutes...They played so bad that Ataman just decided to stop playing all of them and gave the keys of the team to Preldzic, Koksal and Guler

That's interesting about Kutluay being responsible for this roster. Was he still involved the following season when they admittedly made better roster choices?
Haha, yes. I thought that maybe coaching this team made Mahmuti rethink his career. It's strange he hasn't coached in the last few years. I remember him having a decent run with Galatasaray.

Yeah that Galatasaray roster was legendary too. Don't forget Jon Diebler though!

Not a Euroleague team but I'm a fan of the AEK Athens roster of 2020-21. So many well known players over the age of 35:

Can you imagine how much it would have cost to assemble that group of players circa 2014? Langford, Maciulis, Slaughter, Lojeski and Zisis. They even had Tyrese Rice for the BCL games at the start of the season. It felt like a former Euroleague Allstar team. Five of those players retired after that season and Langford didn't play much longer.

Oh yeah, I remember that roster very well. Aek fans were thrilled to have Lojeski and Langford, saying they will win everything.

But I think no one can beat Tenerife in the terms of old age squad. Their current lineup -
              PG - Huertas 40 yo
              SG - Salin 32
              SF - Elgin Cook 31
              PF - Doornekamp 38
C - Shermandini 34 even though he looks like he is 50 yo last 15 years
bench - Fitipaldo 32, Jaime Fernandez 30, Abromaitis 34, Sastre 32, Guerra 31....I have never even seen something like this.

Also worth to mention is Besiktas' squad when Iverson was there. Marcelus Kemp, Iverson, Ignerski, Chatman and bunch of horrible Turkish players. I remember Cevher Ozer and Cetin were playing hahahah...they were horrificly bad. Iverson was taking shots from 15m, Kemp trying to be Durant and then you have Ozer staying in the corner whole day with Cetin running like a rabbit around all of them...what a crazy squad.

Milano had one of the worst for money invested squad ever when Repesa was the coach. Lafayette, Stanko Barac Robbie Hummel, Rakim Sanders (he played great in Sassari to be honest but he was always injured), Jamal McLean, Esteban Batista, Charles Jenkins with his shots 10 cm inside 3 pt line while averaging 7 points per game... and on top of that you have Repesa on the bench screaming "go free throws, screen, go free throws, they are in bonus guys!!!!"

And as a fan of Panathinaikos I will never forget 2015-16 roster. Djordjevic came, DPG announced bigger budget, everyone excited and we got James Feldeine and Sasha Pavlovic as starting SG and SF.... Also Kuzmic backup center, Marquez Haynes came during the season and don't forget mighty Elliott Williams and Vince Hunter. When Pedoulakis became coach at the end of the season only Gist was playing from the foreigners and Feldeine a little bit. Raduljica, Williams, Haynes...all DNP. We fight against Olympiacos and we have Charalampopoulos and Papagiannis who was like 18 back then playing...ugh, I still have nightmares.

That season with AEK I wondered if some of those players were wishing they could all have been on the same team about 6/7 years earlier.

The Tenerife lineup and bench is amazing. I already knew about Huertas but didn't realise the rest of their team was made up of so many veterans. I haven't heard some of those names in a while.

I remember that Besiktas roster well. Ataman hadn't quite perfected his Efes recipe by that stage!
IIRC that was Milano in 2015-16 and they were possibly even worse the following season.
Yeah I remember that PAO team too. That was Diamantidis' final year, sadly. Must have been a shock to be playing on that roster compared to even teams from a couple of years earlier.

Let's not forget the legendary Fener team of 2012-13 with Pianigiani as the coach:

This has to one of the worst performances of such an expensively assembled roster in EL history.

Oh, Peker&Preldzic duo with Baris Ermis&Onan being floor generals...peak basketball. Nothing can surpass this. Maybe Gaziantep when Markovic was the coach and they had Earl Calloway playing 40 minutes every game with Jure Balazic and Tomislav Ruzic waiting on the 3 pt line while Altan Erol yelling at all of them. Peak, peak basketball. Turkey has so many examples
