  • Virtus Bologna fired coach Scariolo...

Official reason: his statements about the team in the press conference 2 days ago (basically said that the roster was built by the front-office and not him, with a limited budget, etc).

This is why a team whose administration choose the roster, shoudn't hire a high level coach. Since they think they know better, why need a great coach??

Or this was just an excuse by Scariolo if things won't go well... who knows.

That being said, if Virtus can land Banchi it will be a great replacement... for some even better.

Did Virtus partly sack Scariolo as a cost cutting move? The shock is that this happened so close to the start of the season, especially when a few months ago they were fighting to keep him when he was linked with Toronto and Real.
He didn't really seem the ideal coach for this lower budget roster. Don Sergio is best coaching a big budget team and looking slick on the sidelines wearing a great suit.

Interesting that Banchi is the replacement. He's had a mixed career since leaving Siena and it's great to see him back in the Euroleague after his success with Latvia.

            • The situation with Virtus is so weird. They are trying to cut costs, they are firing Scariolo but they wouldn’t let Toko leave this summer. Very weird behavior.

Very strange indeed. They also have Lundberg under contract but he's out of the roster.

                  You know too much
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul has signed Latvian playmaker Arturs Zagars to a three-year contract, the club announced on Monday. Zagars (1.90 meters, 23 years old) will play the first season of that contract on loan at BC Wolves. He comes off an outstanding summer on the Latvian national team, which Zagars helped to a fifth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

About Toko they simply doesn't find a buyout agreement with the other team (Pana?) so in the end he stayed in Bologna. Virtus can cut the budget but it's still an Euroleague team so some experienced players have to stay to compete...

This maybe because Scariolo didn't like him and put him out of the roster. The society and the new coach (officially Banchi) will evaluate him in the next few weeks to see if he can help the team... he's not a bad player, maybe a little bit overhyped.

Love between Scariolo and Bologna never blossomed and yeah, maybe he was not the ideal coach for them.

I think Banchi is a better coach with teams with limited budget (not that Bologna has low budget) and can surprise like he did with Latvia...

PAO was willing to take over Toko's contract (1,3-1,5 mil) but not pay a buy out. It was up to Toko to negotiate himself for his release. When Virtus heard PAO were thowing money about for releases they ended up asking for 1 mil. The Toko- PAO deal fell through and PAO instead gave 4,5 mil over 2 years to Juancho.

                            • Bad news for Saras- Grigonis talking about his ambitions with PAO for this season:

Also, did everyone see that Raduljica signed with Maroussi? I genuinely couldn't believe that when I read it, I thought they were still in the Greek third division. Anyway, I'm glad the club is back at a high level.

Bad news for me too, I hoped he could somehow come back to Itoudis after all
