On paper, this looks like a great team. I hope the Azzurri make some noise in this year's Eurobasket. They came close two years ago to braking their "majors" (Olympics & World Cup) drought but got edged out by Serbia. This team is talented and experienced enough to make it to Rio.

Very good squad indeed. Hopefully they will be strong enough to make it out of a tough group in Berlin, probably at the expense of Turkey.
For me it will all come down to playmaking, and level of adjustment of their NBA players to the European style and know-how.

we have the btter couple of the playmker of the last 6-7 years on the paper (two years ago travis diener was injury)

we have great offensive power, but our defensive' weakness could be a problem,so i hope Pianigian can find right adjustement and called together our two protector rim Cervi and Cusin that they can partially hide our weakness!

Not bad but i think the 1st unit needs another ball-handler and offensive facilitator (Gallinari or Gentile)... and i'd start with Cusin under the boards.

In Italy there are still many thinking that Bargnani might be a factor... well, a 30 years old guy who has been playing around 800 friendlies in the last decades (probably less, considering injuries), a seven-footer who can't take a rebound, who can't defend on any living power-forward or center (actually, he can't defend on any living biped), who has never developed some inside the paint move and who has been wandering for all courts with the same stoned face since his debut in the NBA.
Italy has no centers, Cusin is coming from an injury and Cervi is just tall but unable to do anything on court.
What about point guards? Hackett still believes to be sort of new Magic Johnson and we saw what happened in semis: without him (disqualified) Milano had a 2-0, with him Milan was 1-4. He's also 27, it's hard to think he might improve: it's this kind of player (that is an average player, since he's totally useless as long distance shooter) and he has shown too many times his temperament. Cinciarini is just average and he would never be able to make the team if he were Spanish, French, Serb, Greek or German.
                  What about 2-3-4 positions?
Gentile is actually the only reliable player (unfortunately he signed a new contract with Milano: bad choice for his career), Belinelli is always the one who in Eurobasket 2013 decisive games had 6/182 in field goals, Gallinari might be a good player but - like Bargnani - is used to play many friendlies in useless NBA teams and also has problems with injuries.
The last one to be mentioned is Datome: not even a NBA garbage time player and in Italy he was a bencher in strong teams and a leader in low level teams while playing in Italy. Another one turning 28, who had two seasons without playing at all. I read that Fenerbahce might offer him 2.000.000 USD: this is why Turkish teams will never win anything.

The rest of the team shouldn't even be considered.

Wow, so many wrong statements, I don't know where to start...so I'll start from the only one with which I agree .

Yes, center and point-guard positions are clearly the two problems of this team, far away from the top european level.
But let me ask you a question? How in the world could, a so bad team, finish in the best 8 teams two years ago, beating Russia, Finland, Greece, Spain and leading after 3 quarters against a team that reach the final (Lithuania)?
Or do you think that our roster was better in 2013, with the zombie-version of Travis Diener instead of Hackett, Vitali instead of Gallinari, Rosselli instead of Polonara and, last but not least, Magro instead of Bargnani?

And then, what about 2-3-4 positions? We are great at these positions, there are not many team with a group of players better than Belinelli-Aradori/Gentile-Gallinari/Datome-Melli-Polonara and if you can't see it I can't help you.

I agree that this team is overrated here in Italy, because there are so many ifs with this roster (first of all the players health...), but this team has the potential to make some noise in Berlin and Lille...

i don't see many problem on Pg,because Cinciarini played a great season last year and now is a better player than two years ago and Hackett add phisical defense that we didn't have two years ago!

Center position:if we have Bargnani healthy i don't see problem beacuse behind him there are Cusin,an experienced player and Cervi that can play few minutes at this level!

the problem will be chemistry on offensive side and organization on difensive side, becuase we don't have defensive player except two or three!

I absolutely agree, we are better than 2013, at both C and PG. But although Cincia played a very good season (I love him, great heart and passion) he has played it in the Serie A , which is far from the top european level, and he has some limits in his game (not only shooting), so I think he is still not close to the top point guards in Europe. And yes, it's great to have Daniel back in the NT, especially for his defense and physical play, but we have to hope he will play better than in the last part of the season.

For the center position: il Mago is a big question mark and, even if he is in good shape on the offensive end, he still is a problem for rebounding and team defense (not man-to-man defense, he is good at it)...so we will have to be two different teams, one with him on the court (a team with a great scoring big that has to be covered by great team defense and effort) and one with Cusin/Cervi in the game (good intimidation C, but a team with 4 men on offense and without inside scoring, apart form easy dunks ). Will Pianigiani able to do so? I don't know, not an easy task. But if he can, watch out...

The first day back at work is not something anyone looks forward to, but Italy have concluded the opening sessions in their EuroBasket 2015 training camp and spirits run impressively high among the team.

It is not because head coach Simone Pianigiani has decided to ease the players into it and they are getting away with light work in the town of Folgaria, where the first stage of preparations will take place.

"Practices will be much harder than games," Pianigiani had promised his players as the team was about to depart to Folgaria.

"Then, [starting 30 July] we will play nine warm-up games within 15 days to hit the ground running at the EuroBasket."

The primary reason that Italian internationals are all smiles early on is because, for the first time in years, everybody arrived at training camp healthy.

"Negativity does not exist in my vocabulary anyway, but in any case everything I see here is positive," a beaming Danilo Gallinari told Gazzetta dello Sport TV.

"We are all enthusiastic, we know each other well, and we all have the will to play fast, beautiful basketball.

"I feel that we can compete against any team."

Alessandro Gentile echoed the sentiment: "It's a beautiful feeling to be part of this group, it's very nice to meet again everybody in the summer."

"We are all very happy and eager to get going," the Olimpia Milano star added.

"This is a team full of very talented players and I think that each one of us wants to do his best to find his space within the group, in a way that he is useful to the team."

If everything goes well, Italy will field in September in Berlin exactly the squad they wanted, not the squad closest to the one they would have wanted.

Two years ago, in Slovenia, Italy had to make do without Gallinari and Andrea Bargnani and Danilo Gallinari but raced to an unbeaten First Round at EuroBasket 2013.

Pianigiani's men reached the Quarter-Finals, albeit they finished in eighth spot.

Luigi Datome, who will captain Italy at EuroBasket 2015, believes the full-strength Italy of this summer can climb two places higher than in Slovenia.

"This team competed as equals against everybody two years ago without having the big names we have today, when we are so much better equipped," Datome said.

"The minimum goal is to advance to the Second Round, but our true objective has to be the Olympic Games."

The two EuroBasket finalists will earn a direct berth in the 2016 Olympic Games, while a top-6 finish grants a ticket to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"We all have to learn to speak the same language in the least amount of time possible in training camp," Datome replied when asked what will be the key to achieve this goal.

Gentile meanwhile places more importance on the mindset of the team once the tournament gets under way.

"One necessary ingredient, for sure, is to be able to think only one game at the time," Gentile said.

"You have to play a lot of games in only a few days, so it is indispensable to have the capacity to erase completely in your mind the result of the previous night, regardless of whether it was positive or negative.

"And, obviously, you always get an extra boost when you put on the national team uniform.

"Knowing that you represent your country helps you to go beyond fatigue, to go beyond your limits."

Italy's 16-strong preliminary squad will depart Folgaria on 29 July and move to Trento, where they will play host to the Netherlands, Austria and Germany at the Trentino Basket Cup, their traditional preparation tournament.

Pianigiani's men were drawn in arguably the most challenging pool at the EuroBasket, as they will go up against Turkey, Germany, Iceland, Serbia and Spain in Group B, in Berlin.
