and they should not try to develope basketball??? LOL

for your information portugal who maybe dosen't have great basketball history and sucses has much longer basketball tradition wich dates way before turkey started to build basketball on cheeting, ex yu imigrants children, and stolen ex yu players and ex sssr players with fake papers

          learn to respect others
          Jordi Bertomeu sucks!

Having spent most of last Wednesday watching obscure/unorthodox/profane basketball games, I was pleasantly surprised by some previously unknown (to me, just a fan) players:

Worthy de Jong (SG, 1.91, 1988, Holland): 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Elegant and athletic, made a three-pointer from the cheap seats at the end of the first quarter.

Ionut Dragusin (C, 2.21, 1985, Romenia): 14 points, 7 rebounds against Holland. Not a sight to see but a really big center with adequate mobility that even scores a little. Hey, if even Nezdad Sinanovic was drafted…

Pavel Ermolinskij (Point-forward?, 2.02, 1987, Iceland): 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Whatever his position, this guy is a competent playmaker.

Obviously too young to remember Benfica in euroleague in the 90ies? They weren't at top, but were still normally a competitive team. Blame Uleb and it's policy for many countries like Portugal losing their touch with the competitive basketball.

Just a few notes about the «other» basketball

Being from a marginal basketball nation, I’ve always been fond of the Eurobasket qualifiers: they’re not only a chance to escape the «glorious isolation» of the Portuguese basketball league but offer us an opportunity to discover talented players where we least expect them.

Here are a few notes about the first games:

PG Zach Wright (20P, 11R, 4A) is far more useful to Bosnia-Herzegovina than Henry Domercant.

Keep an eye on the Austrian duo of Jason Detrick (USA-Austrian, SG/SF, 1.98, 1980) and Rasid Mahalbasic (C, 2.10, 1990).

As for Belgium, Sam Van Rossom found a partner in crime: SF Wen Mukubu (11P, 7R, 2A).

When Switzerland played a couple of friendly games against Portugal, a player stood out: SF Dusan Mladjan (24P, 7R and 4A against Albania).

That’s true but it’s quite rude to say it in public. On the other hand, Portuguese basketball authorities are doing everything in their power to grant you your wish.

I don't know why a Croatian member took it too serious,my previous post was some joke. Football is my second favourite sport, Portugal is one of my favourite teams and I meant from ''stay there'' was like a ''continue to produce new top football players like Ronaldo and Figo in the past''.
Yes, we have not old basketball tradition,I also don't like most of fake players from Ex-Yugo and Ex-CCCR but they help a lot to improve our basketball with Turkish-born children of Ex-Yugo immigrants like Hidayet Türkoğlu,Semih Erden,Hüseyin Beşok,Ömer Aşık and Mehmet Okur. The only member of succesfull Ex-CCCR players in Turkey is Ersan Ilyasova(aka Ilyasov).Ex-Yugo immigrants are not problem, but naturalizing and fake papers are big problems of our basketball. I just hope that it was transition period and these things will be ended in near future...
                  @Josko Poljak Fan
I don't remember Benfica because the date of first touching basketball for me is 2001-when I was 12.There was no basketball court in my hometown. I watched the our hosting 2001 EC on TV and I started to care about basketball. My words weren't offence to our Portugese friends, I just said to praise their football...

Things do get lost in translation, no biggie

As far as Mahalbašić goes, few years ago I've heard people saying wonders about him and lots of them whineing that Slovenia left out one of the most promising power forwards of the decade (as he decided to play for Austria, while born in Slovenia), yet nowadays it seems it's turning a bit harsh for him, failed tryouts with Olimpija, later Fenerbahče, eventually even the worst ABA team Pivovarna Laško wasn't interested in re-signing him (and they sure could use a PF/C last season). Sth. like 5 years ago, some people even claimed he was promising a borderline NBA potential, so basicaly he is pretty much a dissapointment so far.

No problema Turk-Yugoslav..., in fact I find football most boring, especially when compared with basketball, so I won't stay there apart from enjoying Mourinho's and Ronaldo's success (great for a small nation like ours, although I mostly dislike their personalities).
The problem starts at grass roots, many kids are sucked into football, including some that were talented basketballers (I guess some parents believe their siblings will become new Ronaldos and pay for their parent's mortgages and new mansions and cars like Jaguars...). Also money for funding basketball coaches and teams, starting with the youth teams, is getting scarcer and scarcer and most of it is once again vampirized by football. Also school sport is a total joke...A hard days night really...

Well Israel, Poland and even Italy were in pot 2 as well, not to mention Latvia and Montenegro in pot 3, while Finland and Georgia did deserve the pot 1 at the last eurobasket imo, BiH has the talent to surpass most of them, yet has to proove that on court. I wouldn't care too much about that honestly. With 24 teams competing at eurobasket in 2013 BiH will advance easily, while I can imagine they'll attract quite some fans to Slovenia having an ideal chance to do something on that tournament.
