the players to watch really are...
Rony Fahed (PG 6'0'') - good perimeter shooter. an outside shooter and can hit pressure shots...
Sabbah Khoury (SF 6'5") - this guy can shoot too...
--
i'd like to see the matchup of Helterbrand and Fahed... they both play alike... but Jayjay seems to be more athletic...

any news about the lineup...?You've got to have it to win it

Here's the F------ problem with RP Team!
NEED WE SAY MORE?!!!
Lebanese five arrives today, but PBA can’t say who’ll play them
By Gerald Peter Arce, Correspondent Manila Times
LEBANON’s national basketball team arrives Friday to play two tune-up games against Filipino squads before heading to the World Basketball Championships in Japan.
Problem is, the visitors don’t know who they’ll be playing against.
The RP team backed by the Philippine Basketball Association only has six players available to play the Lebanese, who are scheduled for matches on Sunday at 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In a statement, the PBA said a “hastily assembled” Philippine training team under coach Chot Reyes or one of the pro league’s ballclubs would be “asked to step in” for the games slated at the Araneta Coliseum.
“This will depend on the availability of the players,” said Reyes, who presided over a team scrimmage Wednesday night at the Club 650 gym in Libis, Quezon City, using the only players he has available—Dennis Miranda, Mike Cortez, Sonny Thoss, Willie Miller, Billy Mamaril and Asi Taulava.
Reyes, who was recently appointed as head coach of the San Miguel Beer team, also said fielding a PBA team against the Lebanese is an option, “but you will have to talk to Commissioner [Noli] Eala about that.”
Yesterday, the Bureau of Immigration permitted the 25-member Lebanese team to enter the country for the tune-up matches they need before the World Championship next week in Saitama, Japan.
Despite the bloody Israel-Hezbollah conflict currently tearing up their country, the players are determined to prove that life can go on for most Lebanese. The team was invited to the country through Philippine Basketball Federation president Moying Martelino.
They will be arriving today from Jordan together with Lebanon Basketball Association head Michael Tannous at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 2:20 p.m.
“As long as their documents are complete, there’s no problem about it. We have a good diplomatic relationship with Lebanon, and the arrival of their national squad certainly boosts our national basketball program,” said Immigration Commissioner Al Fernandez, who is also chairman of the local athletics association.
Still, the Lebanese came at a bad time.
With less than three months to go before the start of the 2006-07 season, most PBA clubs are taking their training out of the country and hanging on to their key players, some of them members of the national team.
San Miguel Beer, for one, is unavailable to face Lebanon since it is leaving today for Taipei to compete in the Asian Professional Basketball tournament from August 11 to 19.
New PBA chairman Ricky Vargas said his team, Talk ’N Text, is committed to play in an international invitational tournament in Beijing two weeks from now, coinciding with the Brunei Cup where the Philippines is the defending champion.
“While we want to continue our support of the national team, we also need to attend to the needs of our team, which was the worst-performing ball club last conference,” said Vargas.
The Lebanese are tough opponents for any local squad. They qualified for the World Championships in Indiana four years ago—although they finished dead last—and finished second to China in the Asian Basketball Confederation men’s championship.

Hohum!
Disappointing.
Coach Reyes should be given more authority.
This is a joke.
We don't have a team.
That's just stupid and we're going to play the 2nd best team in Asia.
I agree with the others who think RP will loose.

RP TEAM LINE UP for RP-LEBANON game... Aug13 & 15...
(here's a new development from the PBA)
via comment by cyanide-pexer.. thanx man!
Honoring a commitment to support the cause of the national team, Talk 'N Text, Red Bull, Alaska, Ginebra, Coca-Cola and Air21 today agreed to lend four of their best players for the Philippine-Lebanon series.
Suiting up for the RP squad are Jimmy Alapag, Don Allado, Renren Ritualo and Asi Taulava of the Phone Pals, Mick Pennisi and Larry Fonacier of the Bulls, Willie Miller and Mike Cortez of the Aces, Rafi Reavis and Billy Mamaril of the Kings, Dennis Miranda of the Tigers, and Ranidel de Ocampo of the Express. The return to the fold of the 12 Philippine Basketball Association stars allayed fears the Lebanon series, set Aug. 13 at the Cuneta Astrodome and Aug. 16 at the Araneta Coliseum, would go to waste.
Only six players attended team practice three days ago at Club 650 in Libis, Quezon City and national coach Chot Reyes had contemplated asking PBA commissioner Noli Eala to send in their place a regular pro ball club to face the Lebanese national team, the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship runner-up.
"Looks like a solid team," said Eala, who burned the phone lines with PBA teams the night before to help save the series. "It is a testament to their commitment to the RP team that the ball clubs came forth and offered their players."
Reyes, however, would be unavailable to coach the team, at least for tomorrow, due to a previous commitment by San Miguel Beer to play in an invitational pro tournament in Taipei.
SMB management named Reyes the new Beermen head coach a week ago, replacing Jong Uichico, who took over Siot Tanquingcen at Barangay Ginebra.
Norman Black, 1989 PBA Grand Slam coach with San Miguel and the current Ateneo Blue Eagles mentor, will sub for Reyes, who hopes to return by Aug. 16 in time for the second exhibition game.
Black, national coach during the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, ran RP team practice the last two days.
Lebanon beat Canada, without Steve Nash, last week, just a day falling to Slovenia, a former Russian republic.
The delegation, which will then proceed to the World Championship in Saitama, Japan, arrived this afternoon from Jordan via Qatar Airways and was billeted at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in Ortigas.

Yeah, that looks like a solid lineup. We have a great backcourt (Alapag, Cortez, Miller and Ritualo), not to mention we have the bigs we need (Taulava, Reavis, Pennisi). But our small forward position looks weak. Ranidel would definitely have a hard time defending Fadi. Dont tell me, Fonacier's gonna play the 3. Coach Norman should use Reavis to man Fadi. Best thing we can do is alternate de Ocampo and Reavis in the 3-spot.

Omar Turk 6-1 pg
Fadi El Khatib 6-5 sf
Rony Fahed 6-0 pg
Ali Mahmoud 6-0 pg
Hussain Tawbe 6-5 pf
Sabah Khoury 6-5 sg
i believe that they are the same line-up coming here to play against our RP team. all except asi taulava's cousin, 6-10 Paul Khoury(#14 a taller version of ali peek). and is replaced by Roy Samaha (6-9).
dont be too intimidated of their heights, as far as i know Khoury is just as tall as taulava both at 6-8, and that i remember a pinoy commentator in the coverage of the asian championship saying that joe vogel looks more like 6-9. they may have padded their heights to make them more intimidating.
Asi Taulava vs Joe Vogel
Don Allado vs Ali Fakhreddine
Raffi Reavis vs Fadi El Khatib
RenRen Ritualo vs Sabah Khoury
Jimmy Alapag vs Rony Fahed
Mick Pennisi vs Roy Samaha
Billy Mamaril vs Brian Beshara
Ranidel de Ocampo vs Jean Abdel-Nour
Willie Miller vs Omar Turk
Mike Cortez vs Ali Mahmoud
Larry Fonacier Hussain Tawbe
Denok Miranda Vs Bassem Balaa
What happened to Sonny Thoss?? i thought he was supposed to be 1 of the 6 who only showed up on the first day of practice. I hope he is still included, id rather have him play than billy mamaril.
with him we could have a bigger line-up.

Now they're talking. If this lineup will push through, then Lebanon will be in for a hard time. Im not saying Lebanon will not win, but these Filipino players will give them a helluva game. Might beat them too. Depend on the breaks.
Man for man, I think Philippines can match with them. But the thing is basketball is a team game. With Lebanon playing for years together as against (again) a newly-formed RP team I think Coach Black's wards need much more than luck to beat Fadi and company. Player's familiarity with each other and teamwork will still be the biggest factor in this series. And besides Philippines need an alibi as usual, if defeated. (This..., "it's a team composed a few weeks before the tournament" crap... has been really annoying.)
Just a wild prediction here, I'd say one game a piece for the two squads. One with a large margin and the other a close match.
Wad'ya guys think!Last edited by DimeDropper; 08-11-2006, 02:39 PM.FOR FLAG AND COUNTRY!!!
