maybe the better option is to get all the ineligibles playing here as soon as possible. make them do a one and done in the uaap to show that they studied here. Get Hepa, Millora-Brown, Harper, and even Remy Martin if they don't get drafted in the NBA.sigpic

Gilas plea for Clarkson and Co. draws hope from Fiba ruling on Jawato
by RANDOLPH B. LEONGSON
FIBA allowing Brandon Jawato to suit up for Indonesia offers a glimmer of hope for Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in its longstanding quest to have a number of Fil-foreign talents be recognized as locals for Gilas Pilipinas.
SBP president Al Panlilio said the federation continues to hold dialogues with Fiba in its bid to scrap its rule requiring athletes to secure their passports by the age of 16 before being eligible to suit up for their respective national teams.
"That has been an issue we've been raising to Fiba," said Panlilio as the SBP stands at the forefront of proposing reforms on those eligibility rules. "We have to have a dialogue with Fiba on what actually happened there and continue to push our case to Fiba."
Jawato, an Indonesian-American forward granted citizenship by Indonesia's Congress back in October, was cleared by Fiba to play for the Garuda as local in the upcoming November window of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers.
The ruling would allow coach Rajko Toroman to pair him with naturalized player Lester Prosper in Indonesia's games in the Manama bubble in Bahrain.
According to Indonesia-based publications, Fiba, in clearing Jawato, considered "several factors that underline this decision, including the status of Jawato's father, who is from Indonesia, his participation in a professional national competition, and the length of time he has lived in Indonesia since 2015."
It's a ruling that could benefit more nations including the Philippines, as proponents like Panlilio continue to ask for the scrapping of the controversial eligibility ruling.
Scrapping the rule will open the doors for Fil-foreigners like Christian Standhardinger, Stanley Pringle, and Mo Tautuaa, who are all categorized as naturalized players in Fiba standards despite having proof of their Filipino citizenship.
Players like Jordan Clarkson and Chris Ross, meanwhile, were able to don the national team colors as the Asian Games and the Southeast Asian Games are both not under the jurisdiction of Fiba, although competition rules depend on the respective host's organizing committees.
"These players are truly Filipinos, and it's just this rule of not having the passport by the age 16 that has been the impediment with that regulation," argued Panlilio.
It's a cause the SBP definitely believes is worth fighting for, but the soft-spoken executive knows that it's still the Fiba Central Board which will have the last say on the matter.
"That's not for me to answer. That's on Fiba," said Panlilio.

Let's not be too envy on Brandon Jawato's eligibility status as per FIBA's decision, kudos to our Indonesian brothers on this latest development, as you guys mentioned were hoping that the likes of Thailand, Vietnam and all Asean countries may also benefits with this exemptions hence leveling the playing field here in SEA will benefit Gilas moving forward. Granting Gregory Slaughter and James Daniel Spencer an exemption before is just fair enough, as of the moment we can't demand to much on FIBA to avoid any negative impression on the Central board, palipasin muna natin sandali ng (napaka) maikling panahon before we request for another set of possible exemption(s). For me personally, aside from Ange Koume to be tag as a local, I think we could invest and focus on some much younger players with the likes of Sage, Philips brothers of DLSU, Edu brothers, Lane brothers and Millora-Brown, those kids I mentioned is a good investment as far as beefing up our future frontline not only this coming 2023 but beyond, we have to be real, Kai and AJ cannot do it alone in the shaded lane if we really want to improve our FIBA rankings and go deep in any big FIBA sanctioned tournaments, now the question is are the SBP guys are dead serious on this lads because their length is very critical in the puzzle.
In Fairness to Ctan, Stanley, CRoss and MoTau they already show us their capabilities but we have to be realistic that age is catching up on those dudes, As I said before, JC is one of the big piece on that puzzle for 2023 and if JG wants to play for us beyond 2023 he will also had a critical part of that puzzle....it really boils down on his desire and realistically speaking if the price is right.

Here is what people need to understand, there is a realistic pathway for Kouame and Clarkson to play together in 2023.
There is no realistic pathway for a NP via Congress who has no residency in the Philippines to play with Clarkson in 2023.
Think about that first, now what would MVP and the SBP pursue given that?
Jolibee, Pringle etc? Are you serious!NBTC- Team New Zealand - Camp David: vision "To provide a basketball Pathway for Filipino Kids in NZ while building men of character and leadership. I can do all things ...

Just like UAAP, FIBA does not actually distinguish with how naturalization was acquired, whether via grant (Congress) or birth or by relationship laws. They just factor when was a player naturalize (using passport issue date as main document).
Issue date is the main single source basis if one is classified as NP or local.
There are exceptions to classify as a local.
With 2 explicit guidelines
1. Residency and
2. Domestic league play
The 3rd stipulation (other significant connections) is NOT.. A requirement, But rather other factors presented to boost one chances of getting an exception. See the difference. Examples of other significant connections are :
Entnicity of parents, boosting Competitvness for a host, adoption of language and culture (incudes education), age lapsed from 16 yrs old passport
It's quite straightforward and clear.NBTC- Team New Zealand - Camp David: vision "To provide a basketball Pathway for Filipino Kids in NZ while building men of character and leadership. I can do all things ...
