Imagine if a center like Haddadi was playing against a Philippine center who LIKES TO run in the break after we get a rebound? Haddadi wouldn't be able to score as much because he would get tired trying to chase his man. He'll be forced to play defense. And I'm talking about a NATURAL center. Not someone like Japeth who was just forced to play center in the finals because of the injury to Douhtit. If you think about it, if Japeth at the 4 had a frontcourt partner who is legit center that LIKES to run, Iran's frontcourt of Haddadi and whoever would get exhausted faster and would have lesser energy on offense.

    I'm not saying anything negative about Douhtit and Fajardo, I'm just saying that this is something we might have to look into as we move forward. Douhtit's already 33 and won't be around that long. Maybe he can promoted to one of the assistant coaches and personal low-post trainer of our 4's and 5's.

    Let's face it, it's highly unlikely that we can match the size and strength of the frontcourts of Iran and China even if we have the option to naturalize a player. But since we have that option to draft a naturalized player for our national team, we might as well look for someone that can counter the edge in strength and size of our opponent's slow centers with speed and mobility.

    Maybe we can naturalize someone who is 6'10" or 6'11", is a natural center, but LIKES to run the break and is seldom stationary in a half-court set. Japeth's only 26 so he'll have maybe 6 or 7 more productive years with the national team. It would be great if we can pair him with a legit center who can run with him in the break to make our opponent's 4 and 5 work harder and get tired faster. Then Fajardo and/or Slaughter and/or Sangalang could be the big men off the bench that play differently and gives our team a different look and option.

      • Get someone who will be effective in Chot's system. Someone like a taller version of Ali Peek. Even in TNT the locals are doing most of the scoring.

          overall, I think it would be easier to find a young (15 year old) african and groom them to become our naturalized center.
          I think that MVP can get a legit NBA player if he's still interested in getting one.The problem for that would be if the guy is really good,he will have his salary raised and suddenly,we can't afford his insurance anymore.But that would be high risk,high reward.There are a lot of tall guys in the NBA that I think, would be good enough as role players in the NBA but would dominate any Asian tournaments. You got 7'1 Meyers Leonard,7'',23 year old Mason Plumlee,6'11, 24 year old Larry Sanders, 7'', 27 year old Jason Smith,6'11,27 year old Jason Thompson or if we are really lucky to get Tyler Zeller to agree then why not? If Alex Len didn't play for any NT,he would be a very good candidate and an expensive one too.He's like a lean,athletic and mobile Heddadi.

            ‘No Spain, if no seven-footer’

            NOW is the time to think big after Gilas Pilipinas gallantly upgraded itself to compete against world-class basketball teams.
            Coach Chot Reyes said he could not be prouder of what the Philippine national basketball team did against Iran, which manhandled Gilas in the Fiba Asia title match.
            No, the succeeding statement should not be taken to mean coach Reyes has made a turnaround in his appreciation of Gilas Pilipinas’ successful mission in the Asian basketball championship, which ended at Mall of Asia on Sunday.
            * * *
            Listen please.
            “We are not going to Spain without a naturalized seven-footer,” Reyes told the Inquirer after stepping down from the interview podium inside the media room of the Fiba Asia Championship.
            This was on Sunday evening, a night after the Philippine team subdued a very tough South Korean squad to claim a berth in the Fiba World Cup slated in Spain next year.
            On Saturday night, coach Chot was observed to be weeping while pacing the floor close to the end of the triumphant toil against the feared Korean squad.
            * * *
            If he indeed shed tears, as reported later by those who observed the hardcourt drama, they were tears of joy from a gifted hardworker who had just been rewarded for his painful labor.
            On Sunday, though, coach Chot was definitely not singing in joy.
            “Our seven-footer doesn’t necessarily have to be American,” Reyes tried to explain softly.
            It was hardly audible, but the declaration was neither a mumble nor a moan.
            It sounded more of a battle cry.
            * * *
            Are they still allowed to change foreign reinforcements this close to the World Cup?
            “Yes, and we will have no choice but to go for it, he can come from anywhere,” Reyes affirmed.
            Will the seven-footer come from the NBA?
            “Not necessarily,” Reyes explained. “He could come from any league in the world.”
            * * *
            No need to ask if it was the fearsome Hamed Haddadi—the burly, fearsome Iranian team pillar that came to be called a ghoul, kapre, by terrified Pinoy fans—who has led Reyes to make the drastic decision.
            The Inquirer also failed to ask Reyes what they would do with American Marcus Douthit, definitely among the big heroes in the national team’s march onto the world basketball stage.
            What Reyes made very clear was that they must make a vital move, go big as much as possible, if they hope to at least be competitive against the elite of world basketball whose ranks the Philippines has heroically rejoined.

                • Is the article by Recah true? I thought Chot wanted to bring the same 12 to Spain as much as possible (he said that to Jessica Soho last night).

                          Guiao vows help as he pushes for naturalization of 'seven-footers' for Gilas
                          By Snow Badua
                          August 13, 2013, 08:38 pm

                          RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao has backed calls for the naturalization of more players for Gilas Pilipinas, which he has vowed to support in Congress in his capicity as a first-term representative from Pampanga.

                          Guiao said the national team program should waste no time looking for more candidates for naturalization to serve as back-up option for Marcus Douthit ahead of Gilas' stint in next year's Fiba World Cup in Spain.

                          “Kailangan natin ng malaki. Kaya nga kung pupunta tayo dun sa world championships, siguro ngayon pa lamang nagsisimula na tayong mag-plano sa pag-naturalize,” Guiao told Spin.ph during a break in the plenary session at the House of Representatives.

                          Now is also the perfect time to push for more naturalization candidates in Congress, with the nation still on a high following Gilas Pilipinas' runner-up finish in the last Fiba-Asia championships, he added.

                          He has offered his help in the naturalization proceedings of the next candidate.

                          “Since ginawa na natin kay Douthit, palagay ko hindi naman na magdadalawang isip (tumulong),” the lawmaker/ coach said. “Panawagan ko nga hindi lang isa ang i-naturalzie - dapat dalawa na."

                          “Kamukha nung nangyari kay Marcus, na-injure. At least may ready tayong kapalit. And one more thing to consider is the age factor of Douthit.”

                          Guiao, coach of the all-pro team that took part in the 2009 Fiba-Asia tournament in Beijing, said Gilas should go for young seven-footers in light of the experience it had in trying to stop Iran's 7-2 slotman Hamed Hadadi in the title match.

                          “Kailangan ganoon katangkad. Nakita natin 'yung pangangailangan sa big man sa ginawa ni Hamed Hadadi nung nakaraang finals,” said Guiao.

                          Guiao agreed with suggestions to evaluate former PBA imports Michael Dunigan and Adam Parada for naturalization, but insisted Gilas should cast a wider net.

                          “Pero hindi natin dapat i-limit sa naging import lang natin. We should explore more. Sa US madami dun. Sa US NCAA marami doon na borderline NBA players. Pwedeng prospects yun,” said the Pampanga lawmaker.

                          • So we got two lawmakers (Yeng Guiao and Robbie Puno) now that can spearhead in legislating a bill for another naturalized player. Let's start the search. . .

                            • maybe chot and company was disappointed with douthit... we were lucky to win against korea without him... finally they now know that we need more naturalized player, but the problem is who will pay for their salary? MVP again?
