  • If Boatwright did not have injuries during college, he would most likely be in the nba. Offensively, he's a modern big who is versatile and can shoot 3s at a high %.

Defensively, foot speed is not great probably because of the injuries and wingspan is also not that long. But he is still 6'10 and moves fairly well. Andre Blatche-lite is a good comp.

I remember him playing almost at the same time in the Pac-12 as Hawkinson (Japan NP) and both had about the same size and can shoot. Boatwright achieved an All-Pac 12 1st team while Hawkinson only reached 3rd team. However, Hawkinson was a much better rebounder and defender.

So based on this selection, it seems we went with an offensive NP instead of a defensive one. Another option could have been a younger NP who has 2-way potential.

Honestly, Bennie could be a good fit if AJ Edu weren't the only big capable of cleaning up after the others on defense, and he were almost surely available for NT meets. But with the current crop of talent that we have, a two-way player at 4 would have been a better fit. Now we'll have to rely on the development of Kai on defense, as well as our perimeter defenders in Scottie, Oftana, Dwight, and Newsome (who turns 34 in July).

In our context, it's harder to build a consistent roster around an offensive-minded player as the NP.

It boils down to certain factors like player availability, system fit and in Kouame's case, redundancy. Kouame can play the positions of Sotto, Edu or Fajardo. And if Sotto, Edu and Fajardo are all available it makes Kouame's chances slim to play in a particular tournament.
        Sir TBC,

I fully respect your take about that “logic being absurd”. That’s your call.

One of the main reason(s) why AK34 was included in that AG line-up aside from the fact that Kai and AJ was not available that time bec. of their B. League commitment and they HAD NO CHOICE but to tap the guy because we badly need some length in the frontcourt and SBP are anticipating that other countries will parade unlimited numbers of naturalized guys and SBP learned their lessons from that Cambodia SEAG. OBLIGADO TALAGA, they are forced to do it because JMF and Japs cannot hold the 4 and 5 spots for the whole tournament.

SBP just want to maximize the rules of the Hangzhou organizers about eligibility.

We had different perspective/opinion about player’s availability, system fit and redundancy and for me personally I don’t think AK34 is an excess on the program or unfit to the system, it’s just that CTC had other plans and ideas and we cannot argue he is the designated national coach. Besides AK34 are not yet exempted by FIBA.

It’s an open secret that many of the Grandpas in the PBA, SBP and few local coaches are not cool with CTB thus many people close to the man are directly and indirectly affected by those actions.

When news brokeout that SBP and SMC are seriously lobbying for JB’s local exemption at FIBA, many people including me had that impression “Ha??? Seryoso?? May ganyan palang galawan..trans. indeed nepotism is really part of the game, obviously we all know it just clowning thing at the FIBA’s desk, it won’t prosper.

All I can say is that actions speaks louder than words and everytime I’ve seen people doing things thru actions to avoid getting caught in the mouth, that’s a clever thing to do.

Can’t explain everything word by word, statement by statement.

Just observing other people’s actions and behavior.

        That is why.

        • at this point my reaction to boatwright is just better than nothing. but i hope they naturalize more especially 2-way bigs and not stop with 3 players in the pool

          • Atleast boatwright is relatively young (27), good for atleast 2 fiba cycles.

SBP's budget must be tight these days, Boatwright is a downgrade from a prime blatch but its something..

With a lot of gilas players coming from overseas leagues, money had to be spread (RE:, insurance premiums)

            • So, we have these needs in the FIBA level that most likely should be filled by an NP:

              1. Go-to guy
              2. Interior defensive presence

These are the two biggest holes in our Gilas rosters, e.

              • We still lack size on the wings, shooting , defense and good play making.

We basically need a LeBron type player to gap these holes

                • So we wanted to clone a 6'8 sean chambers or modern day Devin Davis to fit on Tim's requiremnts.. i for one wanted a 6'8 blakely
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
                  1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

Should get young ineligible players instead of boatwright. Heaps of them.

Cheaper?...as an ineligible guy (that will be lobbied to be a local) would cost more as he will be in demand in asian leagues

That's way cheaper than naturalizing a player like boatwright.. do what gilas women is doing. Naturalized players are our ineligibles (vanessa de jesus)

it only costs much because we need to spend lobby money in congress and senate to make the naturalization bill going...ad the last time we got an inleigible to be aour np cost us million of dollars for insurance alone (to add limited paractice dates)

clarkson's an nba player with a fat contract, if they get non-nba players or minimum nba players like harper jr it will be way cheaper

I hope we're not done naturalizing players. JB fills a lot of holes for us (perimeter and interior defense, shooting, playmaking, go-to option, size at the wing). Those holes will be apparent once he's retired from the NT.
