Is Zain Mahmoud really a legit 6-foot-7? He might be just at best 6-foot-6. I think it is Alex Konov who is a legit 6-foot-7.

    • For those who have religiously followed UAAP games, especially the games of UP & La Salle, how are the defensive skills of Mike Philipps & QMB?
We know QMB is quick & mobile for his size & since he's at least 6-foot-9 & with an impressive wingspan, he can play as a legit center with Gilas (assuming his claim as a FIBA eligible player is true). But what about 6-foot-7 Mike Philipps? Does he have the laterals & the mobility to play as a legit "four". We all know Mike is athletic & a very good rebounder, but what about his defense? I just hope that Mike gets a FIBA exemption in 2 to 3 years time.

Mike's fast enough to play 4. He plays 4 next to La Salle's FSA, Henry Agunanne. Defensively, he blitzes and hedges a lot on pick and rolls. He can protect the basket too. Overall, he's good on D.

As for QMB, he protected the rim very well with UP. He's a good interior defender.

        • I think 6-foot-7 Mike Philipps can play as an undersized center for Gilas, especially against Asian teams with not so tall centers like Korea, Japan, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Iraq.

6-foot-8 "stretch four" Ali Haidar at times plays center for Lebanon. Mike Philipps is more athletic & quicker than Haidar, though the latter is obviously more skilled offensively than the former. Haidar can hurt the defense both from the outside (he's a deadly 3-pt shooter) & inside.

          • A Gilas frontline with Kai, Edu, Junemar, Tamayo, QMB, and Phillips will be a terror in Asia. It could approximate effects of the walking great wall of China with Menke, Yao, and Wang.

Tamayo will be our Gong Xiaobin, he will be spreading terror by not smiling and looking straight at the opponents' eyes, taunting them...

              • I see a lot of Pau Gasol in QMB's game.

More like a 6-foot-7 Oshin Sahakian of Iran's golden generation team.

Mejo ibang level na kasi si Gong Xiaobin eh. Gong was described by coach Tim Cone as China's best player (not Wang Zhizhi) during the 1998 Asian Games.

                    • Good video about our future prospects in the 4/5 spots. Almost all are in there raw stage, I guess. But hoping that majority of them will improve and will not turn into a bust. Gone are the days wherein we rarely see pinoys who are standing 6'9" above.

MEET THE NEXT-GENERATION FILIPINO BASKETBALL GIANTS & POTENTIAL GILAS PLAYERS

Of all the players listed here, it looks like Prince Carino would be the lone future Gilas player, skill and talent wise. If you are looking at the trajectory of our current bigs right now, Kai, AJ, and Carl were not raw as the likes of Calanasan and Yap, let alone the other bigs like Versoza. I badly want to be proven wrong though. I want to see the likes of Owen and Andwil dominating the post while wearing Gilas jersey in the future.

They padded their heights by at least 2 inches each..
These guys are raw as hell. I can't be bothered to check their stats but are they even given ample PT? We'd be lucky if one or 2 of them turns out to be Clifford Jopia or Gio Chiu.

Right. For some context, Kai at 15 yrs old belong to Mythical 5 of FIBA Asia U16 2018 and led the Gilas youth to the U17 WC. At 16 yrs old, together with AJ Edu, he led the U18 Gilas youth to the U19 WC. He was doing all of it while being 2 yrs younger against his opponent. He was also the MVP of UAAP Jrs. who was going toe to toe against Tamayo and Quaimbao.

He was ahead of his time atleast to the standards of a bigman in the Philippines.

Compare to those kids, aside from Carino, there is not even 1 kid who gets a decent playing time. Owen Calanasan just learned how to dunk at 16 yrs old. Andwil Yap is still learning how to handle is body properly. Brix Versoza is already 19 yrs old right now and did not even do something in his stint as UST cubs in Jrs. He can't even crack to the main team of UST tigers, he was signed by them just because of his height.

There is no way we can consider them future bigs of Philippine Basketball like what Kai is right now. That is just a massive expectation.

Carino might be a taller Tamayo in the future. Andwil, Owen might be the Geo Chius at best. Although to be fair they are not that late, Kai was just advance. I hope one of them might be the next JMF, who dominates atleast in local scene.

Hyping vloggers unnecessarily raised expectations of normies so high for these kids. People were thinking they were Batang Gilas ready.

You're right, like I said before, they are on pace for the typical/historical Pinoy bigman trajectory...centers. With their size (and expected strength when they mature) they will find teams. But when it comes to fluidity, athleticism, feel for a game (any sport would've helped)...that needed to be instilled before their growth spurts.

From scratch (without playing any sport beforehand) it usually takes about 8-10 years (10,000 hour rule) to be a high-level basketball player. Most of these guys started 16 or later so they won't hit stride until their mid-20s. That's why most of our trad centers only peak in their 30s (coz they started late). The ones who started way earlier (even if they're big) are not pigeonholed into just being centers.

                              • Kai got serious about basketball around 12 and is now hitting his stride at 22. For comparison, Wemby started serious training at 7 (but played football and judo much earlier) and was in the NBA in 10 years.

This blueprint has been known for so long and yet we still waste so many of our super-tall players. And yes, height can be predicted with high probability.
