making the team, i think we can mimic back it in the Philippines. but the actual tournament is organised by a private organisation with cooperation with local councils (LGUs). im not sure how that goes in the Philippines. most tournaments I know, na hindi inter barangay, is organised privately and most of the time is repped by schools. and based off those who used to play in these tournaments that I personally know, schools will always try to win more than focus on development. they let kids develop during the games. but the thing is, if its say, 9u tournament, almost all the teams will have 8-9y old players. unlike here, i see 8yr old kids playing in 10u or even 12u aside from the 8u games. obviously that kid wont be as good and will most of the time sit on the bench, but he gets to play in a higher level and get to show what he learned back at his "proper" level. lamang na agad sya sa peers nya.

im not against the thought. and based on my replies, i am very much for something like this setup. just not sure how it will go in the Philippines. hence my statement to get SBP involved.

      • You cannot have a good youth development program with an imbecile in Al Panlilio heading the SBP.

        • I watched all the MPBL UNDER 14 games today and all the future bigs like Breadon gupilan holts, Emman Simple and Samuel Esomchi did very well... Esomchi scored 20 points and 15 rebounds and 5 blocks, Gupilan holts scored 27 points and 5 out of 5 on the Three point line, Simple scored at least 10 points I think... these 3 kids only 12 or 13 years old and played against the 14 years old kids

How is the crowd in this MPBL U-14 tournament?
I think the crowd is crucial for these kids. Pag maganda ang crowd, its good that the kids wud be used to playing with it at a raw age para mawala agad ang "kaba" or "hiya" factor.

thats correct. but most of the leagues (not all) are school based. and some of the schools back in the Philippines hold down the kids. i know this for a fact because i my classmates in UST as well as friends who became part of a varsity team in other schools all said they were asked to take minimum load to maximise their stay in college. its not mandatory but most of these athletes followed it for 1 reason or another. hence, I agree with Metta, and you, that if we can mimic a setup where kids can play for their schools for majority of the year, and some time playing on leagues outside of school restriction, specially if they can play above their age group, that can help the grassroots further.

                  • We're hoping for an athletic 6'9-610 here lol

Well, let's just say the 20 year old got motivated after the Philippines' first-ever podium finish in an AVC event. Monteverde himself said so.

"Yes," the UP mentor chimed in - with a rare, yet knowing smile - when Alter was asked if he was inspired by Alas and a particular player there.

Just last week, Alter and Philippine national team middle blocker Thea Gagate became an official item.

And for sure, Gagate's big win was a cause for celebration and inspiration for Alter.

"Yes. I was very fired up," he exclaimed after finally getting the chance to answer the post-game question.

Hopefully for the Fighting Maroons' faithful, the inspiration continues at the same time as his determination.

"I'm ready. The team's ready. We're improving every day, and that's what matters to us," he said.

                      • I think this kid was already mentioned in several thread but it's my first time to watch the lad in person

and indeed a 12 yr. old 6'2 boy who had lot of potential moving forward.

i hope he has that " I want to be the next level guy" mindset and hook up with a competent skill coach.

                        • just read the article awhile ago about Kamaka Hepa

Familiarity is also a big factor in opting out of a Philippine passport. Kamaka Hepa was a high school all-American from Alaska. He was able to get a Filipino passport before the age of 16. But the 6’10 power forward decided to stay in America where he grew up, and was last seen playing in the Latvia Estonia Basketball League

                          • I don't know how accurate is this news that Kamaka Hepa obtained Phi passport prior to his 16th birthday. Well, I hope its 100% true.

                            • we could only confirm this if the kid decided to apply on the next PBA drafting,

I think Kamaka Hepa was not that enthusiastic enough to play locally because of the competition(?)

                              can't blame him.

                              • Give Hepa the money, since the NBA is already closed to him. Money will now be a major consideration for him if he wants a career out of basketball.
