Probably just me but non-homegrowns aren’t sayang to me. They were never ours to begin with. Usually parang fallback na lang ang pinas, if they did have the option to play for their home country (not their parent’s home country) but they still choose us it’s like they’re doing us a favor. I see no reason for them to choose the PH. Ang sayang homegrowns like Wesley So or Yuka Saso. But I get it though, sayang because of their skills or potential. Dalph got invited to play for Italy but still chose the PH, don’t know if he would’ve been benched over there. Really helps that both his parents are filipino and was raised to speak Tagalog at home. I’m not sure if Hepa and Sage are also 3rd gen. I think Hawaiians have a different culture.

For Geo Chiu could be developed into another Dennis Espino-type of player. Imagine a 6'10 version of Espino giving a phantom punch against some other national teams' marquee players ala Takehiko Orimo. I'm pretty sure that all those players will get erased. I'm just kidding. Hehe

A 6'6"-6'7" Ping is probably more feasible, as they're a little more mobile than 6'9" players here. At least we have some mobile 6'7"-6'8" players here. Best candidate for me might be Raven Cortez. However he plays for La Salle and hence, hard to get.

Chiu could develop to be a good two-way low-post player, though. He already has a good attitude, and fights on the block and on the boards. He just needs an offensive game, which he could still develop. Probably an Espino-type guy, which is actually good. Espino was a good two-way player. Had moves in the post and a good midrange jumper, and could protect the paint and the rim.

ofcourse, sayang sila. we could turn them into locals but we either missed them or they just don't realized the privilege of being a pinoy player especially now that pinoy players are in-demand in Asian leagues as well as NBL. per yuka saso and wesley so, no offense meant but i don't see them as sayang maybe because i am not into their sports the same way i love basketball, rugby and archery.

Anyway, done watching some highlights to see the glimpse of Ladis Lepalam's game. My initial take about him is that his ceiling and trajectory could be like Poy Erram, which is not bad at all.

A kind of a 3 and D big who has some skill in the post. That's actually not bad. His upside might be higher than what Erram is right now, considering that Erram developed only later.

For one, Erram didn't get the National team training & FIBA game experience that Lepalam most likely will get at a young age. Erram was far from being a good National team prospect when he was on his early & even in the mid-20's. He's obviously a late bloomer.

To be fair to Erram, he got his opportunity late. That's kinda why he was a late bloomer. It was only when he was 26-27 when he got ample opportunities with Blackwater. Imagine na lang had he got his earlier. He might have had a higher upside, I reckon.

At least Erram is a capable Gilas player now.

As for Lepalam, at least he is getting his shot now with Gilas, far earlier than Erram. He might develop well, and increase his upside.

I remember it was Air21 sponsored program with the old BAP, Graham Lim era. I think not just big men, but also bigger guards and forwards. I don't know if they'd produced any quality player from that one-off program.

It's one of the downsides of our culture. We don't look at long-term development and want quick fixes. Not just basketball really but every sports discipline faces this problem. That we rely on fil-foreigners is pretty much a testament to this.

true. there was already a program for that but the sponsor is always associated with a school and they always end up using it as a platform to recruit. so what happens is that those big men who are associated with other schools they are not allowed to participate anymore. so wala rin.
