Future Big Men Of Philippine Basketball

Hmm, what bigs do we have that can reasonably replicate Bam's skillset? A 6'7" version, not as athletic by a mile but can play both big positions, has good handles, passing, and a jumper, and an amazing defender who can switch out?

So far, I think the closest is Justine Baltazar. 6'7", can switch, has a good jumper, has played all three frontcourt positions, but could use work on handle and passing. Unfortunately, like Bam, he struggles against bigger post players.

For Now, Baltazar.

Quiambao maybe. But I need to see him in Gilas first.

RDO was actually the complete package offensively as a big, the closest would be Alvin Patrimonio (who actually was better). RDO can post, he can drive, and he can shoot. Good thing we have Tamayo to take over his role, probably be even better, especially considering that Tamayo's more of a combo forward than RDO was (no disrespect meant to one of the most offensively-versatile bigs in the Philippines).

The complete 4 for me would be a 6'7"-6'8" guy with RDO's or Patrimonio's offensive skillset and Ping's defensive versatility. Hopefully we get to see that guy soon. A 6'7"-6'8" version of Danny Ildefonso won't hurt as well.

We have 6'7"-6'8" guys, they're just not trained as fours, e. Well, we have Tamayo, Baltazar, Go, and hopefully Cariño and Matthew Aquino, probably Rangel. That number should ideally increase.

He had it all, man. He was very skilled down low, and he had a bit of a perimeter game, even a three-ball. He wasn't a bad defender, and he could rebound with the best of them, thanks to the heart that made him "Captain Lionheart." He could also play both forward positions. His only "weakness" was that he was 6'3".

A forumer here said that a 6'8" version of Patrimonio would easily be a Euroleague player. Man, I hope we get that player someday.

I hope Quiambao and Raven Cortez accept any Gilas invitations. It's the only chance they have of playing competitive basketball at this point, unless the UAAP basketball season suddenly starts next semester. It would also be great for their development. Malay natin, we might see them be like Baltazar and Tamayo in that they're versatile players who could play both forward positions.

As for Amos, I hope his defense is good. JAMSKIE says that he's a Danny Seigle on offense. If he turns into a versatile defender who can protect the paint and switch, he's a goddamn asset.

I also hope Kobe Demisana gets an invitation to the senior team's camp. He has upside as a 4, and was 6'8" at 16. Wonder if he got taller. If he did, and developed a perimeter skillset (of which there were a few flashes), that would be really nice.

His chance of making the Nba is maybe slim, but he will be a huge asset for Gilas. His Defense is very Valuable.

I think UPIS once had Javi GDL playing center, but that was due more to him being 6'5". To his credit, he still played like a perimeter player once he was in the collegiate level. I probably think Demisana would develop into a 3/4. Who knows, Goldwyn Monteverde might be giving him some advice and mentoring, similar to what he did for Tamayo and Quiambao.

Salvoro might go to ADMU for college. Good news. Tab might see him as probably a 3/4, similar to how he saw Baltazar, Tamayo, and Ong.

Playing time talaga ang importante in every basketball players.. They can't be develop if they will be benched for the longest time..

Thats want I been saying especially when I saw interviews of players on Mikee Reyes vlog. We need our players to have playing time to develop and be confident. If we throw out the limit on fil fors then some players will not develop. Just like bigs in B League

We are better at developing bigs than Japan.

The import limit makes sense naman. I've always said that our tall bigs should also be given a chance to develop by getting opportunities. Problem is, their opportunities are limited because they often play behind the import. If they're given the chance to play alongside the import as a traditional PF, maybe they could develop. For example, if Erram and Chua, who were the bigs in Mikee's interview, were given the opportunity to play alongside the imports, they might have developed, and even better, learned to play both big positions earlier. Good thing both can now play PF.

Ang problema, the tall big is usually relegated to play behind the import because apart from the import, that tall local 6'6"-6'8" big is the only other available center, so the minutes are often staggered; sometimes the import gets the bulk of the center minutes. That leaves little opportunity for the tall local to play. That's why I've been advocating for young local bigs to play alongside the 6'10"-7-foot import.

That may help our local bigs to be trained at 4, which I think is imperative if they're below 6'9". Doesn't matter kung modern or low-post ang laro, basta kaya mag-4. The import's usually the 5, so the local big has to be taught to play 4.

Sa PBA, well, this is the problem with the All-Filipino system and the height limit. The Erram types (young 6'7"-6'8" hidden gems who have the potential to play 4) won't have the opportunity to play 4 to make them playable alongside bigger imports, whether here or in Japan. They'll only know how to play center, kaya mababangko at mawawalan ng opportunity.

Chiu is like Carino: still raw, but the potential is there. The question is if you want to gamble on him or not.

Hope Chiu can have some good games in future FIBA games. He has some good upside. He fights already on defense and underneath the boards. Furthermore, it is nice that at 6'9"-6'10", he can play both big positions. Helped that he had experience at PF alongside Kai.

Hope he gets opportunities in the WC windows.

Ladis Lepalam is in the Gilas pool, nice. He could still develop into a nice player. Hope that he develops into a big who can play both PF and center.

With this development, there might be a chance for Quiambao and Cortez. I hope they play for Gilas or at least join the pool so they can develop into quality players.

Of course, Caelum's here. Two interesting names here are Enzo Schatzel and Jeo Ambohot, both of whom play the 4. Schatzel's described as a wing with the body of a big. Ambohot on the other hand has some mobility and height to play the wing, but I dunno if it would just be unrealized potential, like what happened to Troy.

Another interesting name is JB Bahio, who also plays 4 for Beda, but has the play style of a wing, thanks to Beda's 4-out system (I think someone in another thread referred to him as Oftana-lite). I hope that Beda can replicate that with Rhayyan Amsali, Justine Sanchez, and probably Yukien Andrada (although I'm probably reaching at this point).

Caelum - Too Young. But based on his scouting reports. He can play 1-4. And he is freakishly athletic.

Enzo Schatzel - I am not buying yet that he is a wing. Based on what I saw on him. He is still a big.

Ambohot - No idea

Bahio - No idea also

Yeah, I also don't buy that Enzo's a wing. However, he might be at least decent as a big. He looks talented and skilled enough. Even though he's short, I think his strength and skill will be more than enough to compensate. Let's hope he pans out for Gilas.

To be honest, Matt may not have an opportunity to play for Gilas. Oyr Bigs are getting stacked. Though, I hope he stayed for us rather than Japan in National Team.hehw
