  • Here's yet another player our local bigs can emulate.

Paul Millsap's one of those bigs that can handle, pass, and shoot, but he can also bang in the post and on the boards. I hope the Bulls get him on a minimum contract.

Anyways, like with Thad, I hope our 6'6"-6'8" bigs can primarily focus on his passing, low-post play, rebounding, ability to play and defend the 4, and toughness. The perimeter skills (handle and shooting) and ability to switch to the perimeter will be a bonus, and they'll learn to shoot anyway (it's basically a must in today's game).

In an alternate universe, imagine if in 2015 all of the basketball parties back then was united to the progression of basketball in the Philippines. Aside from maybe Troy being developed properly into a three, all of our prospects back then would have been developed nicely like Balty/Tamayo. It sucks that we started late but it is better than never. Our best players at that time would have also had enough preparation with tab. It isn’t crazy to see the Philippines being a top 20-25 team right now if we did. We would have Gold in 2015, Played in the olympics, Better finish in 2017, better finishes in the windows, better performance in 2019 which we could have qualified in the Olympics as the best asian team. If only the basketball parties acted sooner than later man. Sayang talaga, in my opinion 2015 was the best chance.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Long-haired Douche and his Boss consciously sabotaged the PHL NT, after the 2014 WC because they dont want another 2 years (2015 Asia Cup, 2016 Rio) being on the sideline with SMC's rival MVP calling the shots, and getting all the love and appreciation from the fans.. Imagine PHL NT in Rio: Filipinos will be over the moon, and SMC won't even be noticed.

        SG - Lassiter
        SG - Chan
        SG / SF - Parks

        PF - RDO
        PF - Pingris
        PF/C - Japeth
        PF/C - Blatche
        C - Fajardo
Ping was on the downside 2015, i think Greg is the better option for the 12th man here. I like your line-up, but instead we had over the hill Asi, Thoss and Don-Don, and the wrong JC.

Coach Tab unlikely to take LA, even he's a good PG because he's too small (He was cut in 2016 OQT by the way), while Greg will be the 13th man because RDO, Ping, Jap, Dray and Junmar are already set as our bigs... Romeo and Abueva could not been invited in Gilas if SMC players was there... I pick Rosario for this one because Tab always putting atleast 2 young players in his team, whenever he select the composition of the team.. Parks is on my list if he's available.. If not, I will replace him (due to his G-League and Summer league stint) with Lutz... Lutz and Lassiter are two way players that coach Tab will likely to be in his team...
Nice lineup dude, it looks so good! For sure! No disrespect to the Asian teams in 2015 but I truly believed that we would have gold here especially with a better roster like this one than 2015.

Well said man, sarap panuorin if our local bigs can be emulate this guy in their development. I always liked Millsap's game, especially the things that you mentioned. This guy while not flashy is a very effective player and I always appreciate underrated players.

Hahay, if your take hits the nail dude sayang talaga. It is a shame that they did not have the best interests of the Philippine Basketball. I am not saying na MVP is a pure guy ha because I know he gets something out of this as well but they could have find a way to cooperate or be in the middle ground just for the sake of our national team. If in 2015. they all decided to work together as one whether it is the PBA, SBP, to the modern development of our prospects that time like Troy being a 3 instead of a 4/5. It is not impossible to see our ranking be 20-25 talaga right now, hands down.

HAHAHA okay but in a serious note I do hope that JC or Kouame will be a local in 2023. I am also looking forward for the Asian games next year, If JC the NBA player can join us it would be a pleasure! Especially to see him with our young guns.

Maybe Seven Gagate and Kurt Perciano can model their game after Millsap, who by the way is 6'7" without shoes. Maybe Baltazar, although he needs to work on his strength a little more.

Now all that is needed is for the guards to be willing to give their skilled bigman the ball.
For more offensively-minded bigs, imitating this guy can also work. He's a four, which I would want our 6'6"-6'8" bigs to play, and he's skilled down low, but he can drive from the perimeter.

I see Tamayo as a right-handed version of Randle, although less athletic. I hope he can continue to work hard on his handle, passing, and low-post play.

Are they athletic enough to model their game to Millsap. Unfortunately, its rare to have a Japeth athleticism, JF strength, shooting of RDO, motor of Abueva, IQ of Mon Fernandez in one Filipino body.

Baltazar somewhat has the athleticism, shooting, low-post play, handle, and defense, but lacks the strength.

Gagate and Perciano, I dunno yet if they have the athleticism But for the meantime, the parts from which they can model Millsap's game are those which don't require a whole lot for their size, such as low-post play, rebounding, and playing and sefending the 4.

I think for now, we can settle for Ping's strength, RDO's shooting and athleticism (he was a sneaky athlete), and JDV's height. Mon Fernandez IQ might be a bonus. We're looking for a Filipino 4 here.

                      • Perhaps a forgotten player among the young promising good size bigs is former Batang Gilas big man Raven Cortez. I wonder how is Cortez doing lately. Maybe he's now at least 6-foot-8. I remember him as a mobile big kid who can run the floor well.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Man, at 6'7"-6'8", he's a good candidate for the 4-spot. With his mobility, can he be a 3 like Baltazar and Tamayo?

I hope he gets past his injuries. Knee injuries are no joke, just ask Edu. And, I hope La Salle is willing to let him (and Kevin Quiambao) play for the national team.

We never know IPC, with his mobility it is more than possible but to prove this he has to play 3 in stretches in college or join the Gilas Senior program hopefully since he did in fairness once suit up for the flag in Youth competitions. Lets face it, we really did not expect Balty to be this effective as a 3 especially with only a year or less of training as a 3. I am so ecstatic with what we are seeing right now from him. I wish La Salle will cooperate more with the National Team.

Kevin Quiambao and Raven Cortez will not be able to meet their senior Justine Baltazar for the time being. The two La Salle commits have begged off from joining Gilas Pilipinas in its month-long training camp at Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna starting Monday. And it’s because the two are in the midst of […]

In fairness, the end of the article was very positive. I do hope their words will turn into action. I hope they can join Gilas soon.

                            • Here's another classic low-post 4 our 6'7"-6'8" bigs can emulate.

This guy was a low-post beast in Memphis. Not very athletic, but he was strong and skilled in the block. Well, having a 7'4" wingspan helps him finish over bigger defenders. He also had a good midrange jumper.

Damn, I remember Zach from his days in Memphis man especially from 2011 because of Dirk’s run that year. I remembered them taking out the SPURS as a lower ranked team. Memphis was so nice man, the grit and grind. Only a few people can appreciate that style of play. Good player to emulate by the way like you said especially when we consider his lack of athleticism but he did have that body and strength to be effective. He also has great basketball instincts. Dude was so strong also aside from this he was also a very very tough player mentally. I hope our players can somehow recreate that physique while maintaining the same mobility as him.
