Because of what Kai and Kouame provide, we're basically set at Center. so in terms of need it's better that we develop AJ Edu and other bigs as 4's for FIBA..

Aj is versatile enough that he can play small ball 5 if needed if both Kai and Kouame in trouble.

now assuming he becomes a respectable 4/5 big. then yes u can use him either as a center or PF, but as you wil notice when Kai and Kouame are avaialble there is zero minutes left at center. and if AJ turns out into a decent talent , it would be waste if he cannot get any PT . so it forces you to use him at the 4 spot ( and hopefully he develops a decent 4 game by then to be valuable

Basically it is smarter for AJ to try to get playing time in lieu of Baltazar, rather than try to competed vs Kai and Ange for minutes
I think AJ Edu has the handles (something which he has exhibited as far back when he was 15 or 16 yrs old) & his outside shooting has been improving prior to that ACL injury in 2019. I think AJ can play the "four". He has the laterals, mobility, handles & shooting to play as a modern day "four". And of course at 6-foot-10 he is a very good size 4 in Asian basketball.

I just hope that after those injuries, AJ's mobility, quickness & athleticism is hardly affected.

Gilas is coming along on the 1,2 and even 3,the 4 at this point Aj is the most suitable starter,Chiu,Carino and others in the amateur rank is still not beyond the SEA GAMES,they might have to dust off old man Japhet as a backup.

            • After seeing Baltazar's transition from a natural big guy into a 3-D guy, I feel AJ Edu's possible transition from being a center to a legit "four" would even be easier. I think AJ played some "four" during his days in UK & even with Batang Gilas as he tandem with Kai (playing as a center) to form Batang Gilas' solid frontline. Besides, AJ has the skill-set of a four with his mobility, quickness, ball handling & ever improving outside shooting.

Aj plays alot better whenver there's a capable 5 with him, with Kai and Ange,I think he can develop a quick chemistry with them. Now the question is this early among the amateur ranks, there's no one yet to sub for him,so if none will rise up on the World level, then old man Japhet can play 10 mins a game as AJ's sub.

How about Tamayo? Even Baltazar can also moonlight at the 4 spot since that is his natural position.

                  • In a recent interview on AJ Edu, he said that while he was working out coming from his ACL injury, he was focus on polishing his outside shooting. That's good to hear. The way I see it about 2 years ago, Edu is the more skilled player than Kouame. But I think kouame has made significant improvement in his game in the last 2 years, specially ever since he joined the Gilas program some months ago. Edu on the other hand have been idle for almost 2 years now becoz of the ACL injury he sustained while playing for Batang Gilas.

i hope SBP offers him a contract to join gilas full time. he can be a really good complement to both kai and kouame. by that time theres still time to integrate him into the system for 2023.

They'd be more versatile, plus we can add more bigs to the national team.
Our tallest bigs are 6'6" to 6'8". We need to give these bigs an environment wherein these guys are able to play the 4. Now, tall imports (6'9" above) are a good first step. The next step is, coaches need to play their 6'6"-6'8" bigs alongside the tall players. Get the locals used to playing the forward spots.

Hopefully, our young bigs are dreaming to play for the national team. Makes it easier to train them as 4s so that they have a chance at a future spot.

This would be a good scenario, and while waiting for some competition he can go play for the ABL,Bleague or maybe good enough to make it to some low level Euro leagues.

we should trust the process in aj, I think this things we see some light of the tunnel and reasoning on this setbacks that he had the past couple of years
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
                            1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

                            • Aj will come back stronger, his body is maturing and the important thing is it looks like he's healing just fine.

                              • One positive thing with AJ Edu is his good attitude. I think this kid has a good upbringing, credit that to his parents. Such attitude is crucial in times of adversity, like during that time that the kid was recovering from the ACL injury. AJ seem to take such adversity too well & doesn't seem so demoralized by it which is good.
