    TALK ‘N TEXT SUBDUES GINEBRA
Pals survive gritty Kings 4th Quarter rally
    Sunday, 11 May 2008
Playing with a lot of energy after being upset by Welcoat the last time out, the Talk n Text Phone Pals are back in the coattails of the pacesetting Red Bull Barakos and the Coca-Cola Tigers.

The Pals outclassed a struggling Barangay Ginebra squad practically on all fronts and carved out an emphatic 105-95 triumph to jack up their stocks at third place in the 2007-08 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Mark Cardona was a huge inspiration for Talk n Text while Mark Caguioa was a big letdown for Ginebra early on.

Cardona, Talk n Text’s leading local scorer averaging 18.6 points before the contest, rifled in 14 just in the first half leading the Pals in an early breakaway en route to their sixth win in nine outings.

Caguioa hit his average – 24 points -- but didn’t make his baskets until it was a little late.

Also getting tremendous lift from Aaron McGhee and Jimmy Alapag, the Pals led by as many as 28 in the first half and kept comfortable spreads up to the finish.

Ginebra gained some semblance of a fight towards the end as Caguioa, after missing his first 14 field-goal attempts, found his range, allowing the Kings to cut their huge deficit to single digit.

But the Pals were hardly fazed, going on to deal the Kings their seventh loss against a solitary win. It was Talk n Text’s fifth win in as many games with Ginebra dating back to last season.

"I guess we looked beyond Welcoat and into this game, and we paid the price. Good thing we recovered and bounced back, doing a hell of a job in this game," said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.

"At half time, I kept reminding my players that Caguioa is gonna comeback and get his shots. Good thing we already had a pretty big lead by the time he got his bearing," Reyes also said.

Caguioa broke his silence with two free throws making it 52-72 with 4:57 left in the third period. He had his first field-goal basket two minutes later.

The Tokushima FIBA Asia Championship veteran got into the groove in the fourth quarter, firing 16 points, including three treys. But the Pals had built a lead too big to overcome for the Kings.

Talk n Text torched Ginebra with a hot outside shooting right in the first half, carrying a 54-35 spread into the last two quarters.

Cardona and Alapag tossed in two triples each and the whole team converted 43.8 percent of their three-point shots in the first half as against the Kings’ paltry 27.3-percent three-point shooting.

Ginebra made just a bit better from the two-point zone with Caguioa best typifying their struggle on his 0-of-11 marksmanship in the first 24 minutes of play.

Chris Alexander was the lone bright spot for Ginebra in the first half as the seven-foot behemoth tossed in 12 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. (NC)

    The scores:

    Talk n Text 105 – Cardona 26, McGhee 22, Alapag 18, Washington 10, Peek 10, De Ocampo 9, Carey 8, Allado 2, Chia 0, Ritualo 0.

    Ginebra 95 – Caguioa 24, Alexander 23, Helterbrand 19, Artadi 5, Valenzuela 5, Pablo 5, Mamaril 4, Crisano 4, Salvacion 3, Menk 2, Wilson 1, Escalona 0.

    Quarterscores: 31-18, 54-35, 81-64, 105-9

              • MILLER SAVES DAY FOR ALASKA
Aces arrest four-game skid, but not after losing 30-pt bulge
                Wednesday, 14 May 2008

Alaska squandered 30-point spreads, then came "Miller Time" saving the day for the Aces.

Willie Miller scored a personal conference high of 34, including 13 in the last six minutes of the game, and Alaska held off a spirited Coca-Cola chase, checking a four-game skid in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference with a 99-91 victory at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

The Aces made it 5-0 against the Tigers this season with their eight-point win in their first meeting this conference, leaving Red Bull as the solo leader nearing the halfway mark of the elimination round.

The Barakos were impressive in a 109-88 drubbing of the Welcoat Dragons earlier in the night. They finished the first half of their elimination round stint with seven wins against two losses.

The Tigers, failing to complete a comeback from big deficits early on, moved down to second in a tie with the Talk n Text Phone Pals at 6-3.

The Aces, on the other hand, hit the halfway point of their own elims campaign at 3-6, ending a slump that started after their 92-90 nipping of the Dragons last April 16.

"We’ve been playing well only in stretches. At least tonight, we got going in the homestretch," said Alaska coach Tim Cone. "Luckily, we’ve got the monkey off our back. Hopefully, this propels us and gives us some momentum going."

Before the game, Miller approached Cone and promised to be extra aggressive in the game. He did just that, stepping up especially at crunch time.

"Willie took some pressure off Randy (Holcomb) and he won the game for us," said Cone.

Holcomb put in his share, contributing 14 points after struggling for only six in the first three quarters. Cone later reiterated their sticking it out with Holcomb.

Just as the Tigers surged ahead at 76-75 on a 16-6 opening run in the payoff period, Miller pumped in a booming trey to start his sterling endgame show.

By the time Miller ended his act, the Aces were already safely back on top at 96-89 with a minute left to play.

Miller and Holcomb combined for all of Alaska’s first 27 points in the fourth quarter as they teamed up to stave off Coca-Cola’s siege.

The Tigers missed 78 percent of their shots and committed 13 turnovers in a lousy first half where they trailed 26-54.

Only four Tigers scored points in the first 24 minutes with Jason Dixon already the team’s best scorer with 14 on 46-percent shooting.

The Aces established control early, taking the first quarter at 27-16 before stepping up their bid further to carry a 28-point bulge into the final half. (NC)

                The scores:

                Alaska 99 – Miller 34, Holcomb 20, Thoss 13, Tenorio 12, Dela Cruz 8, Cariaso 4, Fonacier 3, Ferriols 3, Hugnatan 2, Quinahan 0.

                Coca-Cola 91 – Dixon 33, Gervin 14, Buenafe 13, Belasco 10, Taulava 7, Macapagal 6, Dimaunahan 6, Cabagnot 2, Catli 0, Telan 0.

                Quarterscores: 27-16, 54-26, 69-60, 99-91.

He's playing like the import of the Aces rather than Holcomb with that level of scoring aggressiveness.

                          • SEIGLE STARS AS MAGNOLIA GETS BACK AT PUREFOODS
Dynamite Danny back in action, scatters 27 markers to lead all scorers
                            Friday, 16 May 2008

Danny Seigle was among players who dished out a remarkable game likely to impress foreign scouts up in the gallery.

Coming back from sickbay, Seigle came through with a personal conference high 27 points, and Magnolia got back at Purefoods, 88-81, in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum Friday night.

The Wagner U product, averaging only 17 points before the game, outdid himself as he went 2-of-2 from the three-point area, 7-of-15 from two-point range and 7-of-9 from the stripe, dealing the Giants tremendous blows as the Beverage Masters avenged their 125-127 loss in their previous tiff.

Jameel Watkins, Lordy Tugade and Dondon Hontiveros added at least 11 points apiece for Magnolia, which finished the first half of the preliminaries tied with Air21 at 5-4.

Nino Canaleta, with 29 points, starred for the Express as they clobbered the Coca-Cola Tigers, 104-86, in an earlier game also watched by foreign coaches, including former Red Bull import Tony Lang.

Now an assistant coach for the Mitsubishi team in the Japanese League, Lang, a one-time PBA Best Import awardee, was particularly impressed with Canaleta.

A number of coaches from the Japanese and Korean leagues are now in the country, scouting the imports currently playing in the PBA.

Watkins and Reda Rhalimi both had mediocre showing in the contest taken over by Seigle.

Seigle scored practically from all angles and personally delivered the killer blow on the Giants with a three-pointer beating the shot-clock buzzer that made it 87-79 for Magnolia entering the final minute of the contest.

Minus injured ace forward Kerby Raymundo, the Giants started flat but waged a fiery chase, putting pressure on the Beverage Masters towards the end.

The Giants fell short on their comeback bid, though, suffering a fifth defeat against three wins.

"By no means, pangit ang pagka-panalo namin. Wala na nga si Kerby, nahirapan pa kaming manalo. But of course a win is a win," said Magnolia coach Siot Tanquingcen.

"A 5-4 record halfway through the elims is a pretty decent record. But we still have a lot of room to improve on. We have to become better if we’re to contend for at least the semifinals," Tanquingcen added.

Raymundo sat out the game due to an injured knee. Enrico Villanueva started in Raymundo's spot in his absence, and the former Ateneo Eagle paced the team with 18 points.

Seigle buckled down to work early, tossing in 12 points as Magnolia raced to a 31-11 lead at the end of the first period.

Tugade took over in the second period and, with support from Olsen Racela and Hontiveros, the Beverage Masters stretched their spread to 24 twice towards the end of the second period.

The Beverage Masters took full control right away while converting 63.6 percent of their field-goal shots in the first 24 minutes of play. The Giants, on the other hand, struggled with a 29.7 percent shooting in the same stretch. (NC)

                            The scores:

                            Magnolia 88 – Seigle 27, Watkins 15, Tugade 11, Hontiveros 11, Cortez 9, Bono 6, Racela 6, Pingris 3, Calaguio 0, Pena 0.

                            Purefoods 81 – Villanueva 18, Rhalimi 17, Salvador 14, Yap J. 13, Simon 11, Yap R. 4. Lanete 2, Yee 2, Sanz 0, Evangelista 0.

                            Quarterscores: 31-11, 53-29, 66-60, 88-81.
