Youth 5 out of Thai tilt

The Nokia-RP Youth team has decided to withdraw from competing in the qualifying tournament for the Stankovic Cup in Ubon Ratchayhani in Thailand on July 23-28 because the event may affect the studies of its players.


Team operations manager Ito Lopa announced the withdrawal yesterday after it appeared that the team may be delayed from returning home because of the distance of the playing venue to Bangkok airport which might take two days round trip.

"They’re going to miss their classes if the tournament will last more than a week, so we decided to forego our plan to compete in the tournament," said Lopa.

The schedule coincides with the mid-term exams of several players. The trip from the airport to the playing venue is 10 hours one way.

"Missing school runs contrary to the mission, vision and core values we have set for this program. Our desire to mentor our youth demands excellence in their academic endeavors," team manager Jun Sy said in a press statement.

"Failure (from their classes) due to absences will mean that we too have failed as leaders in our mission to produce outstanding citizens and in our vision to become the model institution for other sports programs in the country," he said.

Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas Executive Director Noli Eala said the six-day tournament would be a great exposure for the team although the event is intended for the men’s team and not for the youth team.

The RP Youth team has planned to use the tournament as part of its preparation for the FIBA Asia Youth Championships set on Aug. 28 to Sept. 5 in Tehran, Iran.

The RP Youth swept all its four matches to rule the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship for Junior Men in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last May.

In the Asian Youth, they will be facing powerhouse teams such as Iran, Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Jordan and China.

The management is currently looking at the other alternative tournaments in order to prepare the players the Asian Youth.

One of their options is to play in the Liga Pilipinas. The team also played during the elims of the PBA tournament where it lost all its games.

i wouldn't pin my hopes on Fil-Fors. At this early stage of their life, their parents would want them to go to the best possible school. if they are in the US and they are attending a good institution, it'll be hard for them to let their kids go to RP just to play ball.

i wouldn't pin my hopes on Fil-Fors. At this early stage of their life, their parents would want them to go to the best possible school. if they are in the US and they are attending a good institution, it'll be hard for them to let their kids go to RP just to play ball.

Wake Up!!!!!

They say the RP Youth team would replace our senior national team.Whatl I see is there's no continuity of the program,nobody takes the lead.If they are serious about the grassroots they should have been training those kids a long time ago(or atleast now),they should be preparing the next U-17.If the (SBP) is really sincere about this they should have invited those Fil-Ams in the US who should be the vital cogs of the team.They could have kept some of the best teens to play for the U-17 even if they do play for their respective schools.Coach Franz should be thinking of the team's do's and dont's not the ifs and buts.Lack of talents,lack of preparations,lack of quality big men and lack of commitment for the team...these kind of frivolousness could kill us in the end.

My understanding is that the RP youth team will not have Pascual for the next 2 tournaments. He has gone back to the States. The schedule apparently conflicts with his school work. Paredes may be elevated to take his place. No news if there are new Fil-something on the team.

Mendoza is off the team, he's currently playing for the archers. that's another bigman off the pool.

Micheal Wright a 6-2 guard will play for RPYT this SEABA qualifiers for stankovic Cup, Manila Youth Invitationals and the FIBA youth u-19 Championship. i hope Parks will play for RPYT. the Starting SG position will be battle by 2 if parks plays. a deep SG position.

If ever Ray Parks would be included in the team he could fit in the small forward spot..Ray and Mathew could easilly play together without compromising the team's shooting capabilities.If you would include Niko Monachini on the frontline,I think we could beat any southeast asian(excluding RP teams) team there is.
