MANILA, Philippines--LEARNING ITS LESSONS FROM THE men’s national team debacle, the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will kick off training for the Philippine youth team in two weeks.
“We’re developing young talents,” said BAP-SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio.
National youth coach Franz Pumaren will form a pool of 25 to 30 players aged 16 to 18 years old that will include a sprinkling of foreign cagers with Filipino roots.
Among the leading aspirants are NCAA juniors Most Valuable Player Ryan Buenafe of San Sebastian, San Beda’s Nico Salva and Perpetual Help’s Franz Dysam.
“We’re also eyeing a 15-year-old, 6-foot-5 Fil-Canadian-Italian and another aspirant from Los Angeles,” said Pumaren.
Gregorio said BAP-SBP has also sealed a multi-million sponsorship deal that will bankroll the RP Youth for three years.
“We will take care of this group,” said Gregorio.
