  • Sir Mets,

    Nice game for both team.

    Our kid is real.

with Bryce Cofield a 3 Star Recruit, Bryce James a 3 Star Recruit, Isaiah Elohim a 4 Star Recruit, Justin Pippine a 4 Star Recruit among others spearheading the 2x State Champion Sierra Canyon indeed our kid Angelino Marks caught some attentions and hold his own. I hope we could invite the kid for the coming FIBA U18 tourney this Summer(?)

Here’s the news link of that Rivalry game.

    • High school championships are here. So many finals games in Southern California State Playoffs have pinoy and asian flavor...

Division 1 finals: Notre Dame vs Windward - Harper and Marks of Notre Dame

Division 2AA: St. Anthony vs Rolling Hills - Jacob Cortez's bro Mikey of St. Anthony face off against former school of Chris Koon and JT Tan Rolling Hills

Division 2A: Marina vs Long Beach Poly - Kenji Duremdes and his brother Magdangal played for Marina

Division 4AA; Cerritos which whole team almost consists half pinoy made the finals (Soriano, Ribac, Guerrero, Camiling, Monteclaro, Rigor, Barsana)

and the very top Open Division will feature Harvard-Westlake vs Eastvale Roosevelt - Harvard has Robert Hinton of Taiwan team

This is where you can find hidden pinoy gems. It is so difficult to reach these championship games.

      • Divisions are based on school size right?

It's a relegation system. Depending on how you perform (in your league) this year, you will be promoted, demoted or stay in the same Division next year. Divisional playoffs is like the Champions League. Top finishers of leagues (sometimes up to top 4 depending on quality) are the only ones that get to join.

The very top is Open Division. From about Division 3 and above, you will already see mostly private schools and schools that "recruit." For public schools (like Cerritos) you only have players belonging to your district (homegrown).

The cool thing about this is this begins with hundreds (maybe more than a thousand) schools. Then divided into divisions.

The whole Division thing in California has been a little confusing to me.

            For example;

Here's Thousand Oaks High School. https://www.maxpreps.com/ca/thousand...ball/rankings/

            Ranked 53 in the state.
Ranked 8 in California Division III.
Ranked 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA.
Then there's 2 different Los Angeles Metro rankings listed.
            In one they're ranked 27
In the other they're ranked 8

So as a somewhat casual observer, this is hard to decipher.

When someone is referred to this school as being in a certain division, are they normally talking about California Division or CIF Southern Section Division?
Why are there two different Los Angeles Metro?

California Division I has 178 schools.
California Division II has 176 schools.
This Division III school is ranked 53 in the state? Would that mean that they move to Division I next year?

I'm not sure if you have any of the answers. I'm just so perplexed.

That's a lot to tackle, I'll just try to give an overview.

State is the whole state, in this case California. Then states are divided into Divisions (highest is Open).
Southern Section means Southern California. CIF is a separate tournament from the State Tournament, it happens ahead.
Los Angeles Metro means Metropolitan Los Angeles - all cities that are considered within Metro LA. There should only be one Metro LA ranking, probably a system bug.

Rankings are how a team is performing currently. Since there are thousands of schools playing in all sorts of levels in different leagues and different number of games, there is a computer program that estimates the ranking of a team based on team record and "strength of competition." It's not an exact science. If a school wants to score a high ranking, the coach has to schedule a season playing against top teams (non-league games). That's why nationally-ranked teams travel the whole country.

You can have very highly ranked teams in low divisions possibly because in the previous years they sucked and then improved drastically or the system bugged out (it happens). Something like what happened with Chino Hills which is an ordinary public school and then all of a sudden becomes the # 1 team in the nation because of the Ball brothers, and then back down to earth.

Relegation to different divisions is something a board decides upon. Schools are also regularly shifted to other leagues based on quality, it's not always about location.

              • Mikey Cortez # 13 with the crucial free throws to help his team St. Anthony win D2AA (3rd toughest) championship in CIF. Start video at 4:25

He was very good in the whole playoff run. Amazing year for the Cortez family.

This is how it usually is with pinoys (or other asians) playing in high level leagues, you're usually by yourself.

Notre Dame, St. Anthony and Cerritos.

So happy for the kid, I used to train him in basketball when he cross-trained

He's not alone Hawaii's Micah Alejado a freshman, made his first start on senior night,he looks to me a smaller version of the great Roman Gabriel. https://youtu.be/J25jjModu3w?si=6czcvCvnaDTlPlar

                    • Caleb Sanchez has been racking up successive Player of the Week honors in the Ivy League.

Caleb Sanchez (8) Quarterback - HIGH SCHOOL: A 2023 graduate of St. John Bosco High School … Named 2023 Trinity League MVP … Also played on basketball and track

He's like a movie character. Summa cum laude in a powerhouse high school team then freshman star quarterback for a D1. I'm surprised the "Uy Philippines" crowd still has no clue about him.

Don Bosco Prep is just 20 mins away from us, and yes, can confirm he's under the radar in the North Jersey Filipino community here. Maybe because he is more associated with being from El Salvador. His nickname is "El Compa" and the huge Latino community (4x as many as the pinoys here) already claimed him as theirs.

                        • The best Fil Am QB prospect is still 2027 Trent Seaborn. Top 100 recruit and ranked 9th among QBs. Obviously he is still young so a lot can happen but we have to hope he maintains or even exceeds his current trajectory.

He went to powerhouse St. John Bosco (nationally ranked) near Los Angeles, he's a Cali boy from Carson (Pinoy country).

His Salvadoran dad was really always there whenever he had sports events, his Lolo from maternal side though, was also an active supporter and always present.

Being from Carson, growing up he would cross-train in basketball with some Pinoy youth teams. He would've been good in hoops too at 6'4 and strong frame. Also preferred playing in the perimeter (I coached him). But football was always the end goal.

My bad. I thought you meant Catholic School powerhouse Don Bosco Prep of northern NJ. The HS program produced the brothers Harper, Ron Jr and Dylan. Also a football hotbed, it counts Jabril Peppers and Tommy "Cutlets" as its alumni

Yeah,Trent and Caleb are 6'1 and 6'4 while Micah is 5'10 he's same size as Russel Wilson, but his throwing velocity is gonna be faster and he has a speed of a RB,it takes alot of guts just to be a qb at this size at the Mountain West Division which is famous for really big Defensive Linemen.Just imagine he can't see over his Offensive Line and he can't see if there's a blitzing Linebacker in B or C gap. What gets the Pinoys in Hawaii and Las Vegas very excited is he's a pure Pinoy specially in size.
