      ‘Norwood elevated RP 5’s game’

      By Ronnie Nathanielsz

NATIONAL coach Chot Reyes said United States National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I standout Fil-Am Gabe Norwood, who joined the Philippine team in its tough stint against top teams from Serbia and Montenegro, elevated the games of other team members and proved to be a major find.

“Norwood was the Rafi Reavis we were looking for. He shut down the opposing team’s top scorer, blocked shots, rebounded,” said Reyes. “Beyond that, the members of the RP team welcomed his presence.”

The lanky Reavis was forced to quit the national team after undergoing major surgery on his shoulder some months ago.

The coach said Norwood’s papers were with the Philippine Basketball Association, where the point person is legal counsel Melvin Mendoza. He said Norwood’s grandmother—a Filipina—had sent her birth certificate, which commissioner Noli Eala said was needed.

“We know for a fact that Gabe has Filipino blood,” said Reyes, stressing that he had met and talked to Norwood’s grandmother, cousins and other relatives who attested to his Filipino roots.

The Fil-Am’s late grandfather hailed from Pangasinan and his grandmother Frances Viloria was from Camiling, Tarlac.

In fact, Reyes earlier said: “I don’t think there is going to be a problem for a passport.”

Norwood is a 6’5” standout, who played point guard for George Mason University, which advanced to last year’s NCAA Final Four and first joined the nationals in their grueling stint in the US. Reyes noted then that Norwood suited up for the nationals against an ABA/USBL selection of players and aspiring pros at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, which the RP team won, 98-74.

“The way Norwood seamlessly blended in, you would think he’s been playing with the team for a long time.”

There are so many cases of lost birth certificate. The local civil registrar were unable to send the birth certificate to the National Statistics Office. This scenario is quite simple but what if the pertinent document was destroyed either by fire or flood and also what if they found the document and find out that there are some technicalities like when Norwood's mother was born, his grandmother is already a US citizen.

“Hindi ko na inaano ‘yun (mapasama sa pool) eh,” Santos said. “Kung susumahin mo ang buhay naming mga player, ‘san ba talaga ang first priority namin, ‘di ba? Ang first priority ko, dahil dito ko nakuha lahat ng kagandahan ng buhay ko at para sa pamilya ko, ang San Miguel. Alam naman ng lahat ‘yun. Ito ang dapat kong paglingkuran.”

It's in the internet...his grandparents are IMMIGRANTS from the Philippines, which means they're already adults when arriving in Hawaii. Am I correct?

if ever he can't, there are still many players who can contribute for the NT
say, cyrus baguio, villanueva, cardona etc.

of course the biggest advantage of retaining norwood wud be maintaining the team's chemistry which is gettin better and better

my guess is that his documents are all ready. the press release that his documents are not ready is just psy-war(mind games) with the opponents
                    =========================================
Anyone who wants to replace a coach because his dwarf team keeps losing against bigger teams is wishing for a miracle and should get a magician. A more practical solution is to get reinforcements unless one is content to wait a few more years in the hope that the dwarf players will grow wings and fly over their defenders. PBA reinforcements will not guarantee a championship, but it will guarantee close losses which is enough to make me happy.

Yeah, your right bro!, Coach Chot will not use Norwood, if all his papers are not yet ready!

                              Prayer for the RP squad

Hmm... it will be better if we pray for all of them, not just the players, coach and staffs but also the people who are responsible for the team like the small person who takes care of them. For me they all deserve the God bless when they go to Tokoshima. This is a simple prayer:

                              Lord Jesus,

Thank you for giving us the chance to participate once again in this prestigious event. We remember all the blood and sweat spilled by our former players who competed in past basketball tournaments that we succeeded and failed because we know they glorified you through their talents. Lord, as we remember their hard work and dedication for bringing pride and joy to You and all the Filipinos, We ask to guide to victory and bringing the glory that we once hold. It's not for selfish glory or foolish pride but to bring glory to You, O Lord and to reward us the little happiness and inspiration to this country that badly needs it. Lord, We may lack strength and height but you will prove the ability to do it. Give us the strength of a lion, heart of a champion, and the power of the Filipino nation. Lord, we also ask for the safety of our players and also our competitors that no one will be hurt when they play.Teach them to be a true God-fearing sportman that will be gracious in defeat and good mannered in victory. We hope that you will grant us the favor that we ask because it is not for one person but for our country and for you. Lord, we hope that you will be on our side in victory or in defeat. We ask your guidance, AMEN

Pray 1 Our Father and 12 hail mary.... I hope that Lord is at our side i guess He seen what our players and our country suffered a lot. I think its our time again. Pls pass on this simple prayer and pray this until we reach our goal. I also hope this will be posted in various place to show support to our team....GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES and our BASKETBALL TEAM!
It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me... I'm the best there is the best there was and the best there it will be.
