Norwood delighted to play for Hapee
GABE NORWOOD, the 6-foot-5 Fil-American who played for the all-pro Philippine team in the recent FIBA-Asian Championship in Japan, is all set to come back to the country and play for Hapee Toothpaste when the Philippine Basketball League opens shop on October 20.
Hapee team manager Bernard Yang said Norwood was elated when informed that they made him the No. 1 pick in the recent PBL Rookie Entry Draft.
“He was delighted when I texted him that we made him the No. 1 pick,” said Yang. “My gut feel is that he is going to come back here.”
Hapee Toothpaste owner and incoming PBL chairman Dr. Cecilio Pedro is looking forward for a smooth and harmonious relationship with the high-flying import, believing he has what it takes to bring back the team to the Promised Land again.
“Dr. Pedro is happy with the recent developments and he’s hoping that Norwood will give us another crack at the championship,” said Yang.
Yang said he already discussed the team’s offer to Norwood but he refused to elaborate the financial package.
Norwood, according to Yang, said he will still discuss the offer to his agent who is in Europe right now.
“Pag-uusapan pa ng dalawa ang offer namin and it seems na mukhang OK naman si Norwood,” said Yang.
Hapee Toothpaste and Welcoat Paints lorded it over the league before Harbour Centre dominated in last three conferences.
Backstopped then by Rich Alvarez, Peter Jun Simon, LA Tenoro, Larry Fonacier and Allan Salangsang, Hapee beat the James Yap-led Welcoat Paints in a classic final encounter three years ago at the Philsports Arena.
“It was one of the best championships of the league. It was full of action and drama,” said PBL Deputy Commis*sio*ner Tom*my C. Ong.SMART GILAS: all the way

Norwood needs to be nurtured with basketball skills far better than what the Philippines can offer. It's ironic to see limited efforts from players with maximum salary.
I wish they would apply "sabermetrics" in those financially challenged PBA teams to acquire players who are value for their money.

Can the brothers of Gabe Norwood play in the Philippines?
Gabe is the oldest of five children. He has three brothers, Jordan, Levi and Zaccariah and a sister named Brianna. Jordan Norwood is currently a wide receiver at PSU.
I think his other brother Jordan Norwood is playing basketball and who is a varsity of American Football in Penn State. Jordan is being given a chance to join the men's basketball team, head coach Ed DeChellis said in Penn State.
Norwood, a former point guard at State College High School, planned to begin a tryout process today at the Bryce Jordan Center as the Nittany Lions (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten) prepared for a home game against Indiana this Saturday.
"He was a very good player at State High and is an athletic kid, a great competitor," DeChellis said of Norwood, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 168 pounds.
Norwood, a two-time Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in high school, could help the Penn State backcourt, which at times has given up more points to opposing guards than the coaching staff would like. However, DeChellis warned against expecting any immediate impact.
Norwood's older brother, Gabe, was a member of the George Mason team that made an improbable run to last year's NCAA Final Four.
