I've mentioned before that his dad is a good trainer, he can make good money doing that on the side. They should stay an extra year and see what happens. UP offer will always be there and would even increase if he delays.
I'm glad his Dad seems to be on the same page. Hopefully, they follow through on staying overseas for an extra year of high school which will increase his chances for a good D1 situation. I'm expecting UP to increase it's offer to the point of it being so hard to refuse.

A major difference is...Gemao's goal is D1 and is maximizing his chances of making it.

Lopez tried to rush things (tried to skip college) while KQ sandbagged too long (never aimed for D1).

I'm liking how Gemao's Dad is developing Andy. It's pretty evident he knows what he's doing since he started training Andy very early and with the correct workouts. Up to now, he listed things that Andy needs to work on if he wants a shot at D1. Very methodical. If Andy was 2+ inches taller, he'd already have offers.

Now I hope Kiefer Alas follows Gemao as soon as possible and go stateside/Canada. Two of them there at the same time would make it less lonely and it might develop a "healthy rivalry" which they carry through D1.

          • Andy is only in grade 11? He seems old for his grade. Based on his birth year (2006), he should be playing college basketball by now, like Flagg, Kasparas, and Harper. While not extremely delayed, as some 2005-born players are just starting their college rookie year, the report that he'll spend 2 years at Royal Crown means he won't start college until age 20-21. That's quite late for an NBA prospect. Even by UAAP standards, true freshmen typically start playing at 19-20 years old (like the U16 2022 batch).

Although to be fair, having a late rookie year in UAAP is common, like KQ for instance. However, starting college basketball early creates an opportunity to spend additional years in college without age concerns when going pro. For example, Kyle Gamber started as a rookie at 18 and will play his 3rd year at 21 - an advantage of being young while having 3 years of college experience. If he doesn't become a UAAP star, he can use all 5 playing years and still be among the youngest (23 years old) to enter the PBA draft, where rookies typically range from 28-33 years old.

It’s already been in the bag for a while now. UP’s roster needs actually dictate that it’s better for Gemao to pursue the US route. His position’s pretty stacked in UP now. When the NU boys go, Coronel, Yniguez, and a few other future recruits will take their place and form a taller backcourt for UP.

Like I said way before this announcement, in terms of basketball development, this should be the way. Everyone thought he's already graduating when I said that there is an option of doing extra years without affecting playing year eligibility.

He needed to clarify that him going to UP was "not in the bag" because a lot of people already assumed that was the case. Nothing is in the bag. He's still 2 years out from college and there's still no D1 offers. Don't think for a second UP will not sweeten their offer to make him go back for good.

Bayla had at least one offer and multiple interests. If he did the extra year in prep or juco (basically the Gemao route), he would have increased his stock and received better D1 offers. And to think it would have been financially/logistically way easier for him since he's from the US compared to Gemao. Guess what made him decide to not do that.

Let's be realistic, he's not making it in the nba as a teenager. Absolute best case scenario for him is getting interest at around Yuki age.

Baby steps. We still have not had a homegrown make it to D1 and do well. He's giving himself a chance to become the first. We need more homegrown prospects trying. Once one becomes a success, then D1 coaches will consider our prospects more seriously.

                  • Phenom offers basketball camps right? Do we steer our kids away from them then knowing their ways?

Kai would have paved the way had he went D1, damn.

I think it should be more of do basketball programs either hs or college steer away in dealing with them rather than parents steering away kids from them.

While their MO does make them look bad, if you actually look at it, they still have their players best interest at heart(well financially anyways). In other words 'alagang alaga players nila' with their needs and more for their career.

                        • Anyone with the video of that Zobel-Arandia Scuffle? Seems like Northport Gov Eric Arejola was in the middle of it. Not a good look considering that he was doing it with high school kids, most of whom prolly minors.

Is he the one who also confronted Danny Ildefonso at the basketball court and gave son Dave Ildenfonso a lowball rookie salary?

Yup same guy. His son Champ was the replacement of Kieffer Alas in batang gilas once he went down with an injury.

after searching youtube, there's one from tv5 news... 3 zobel fans/parents entered the court.. one tripped a player.. another one attacking and punching a player/minor on the bench...
