This isn't a knock on schools with sattelite campuses like San Beda and FEU or schools with an unfortunate stereotype of pang-basketball lang like St. Francis of Assisi, because there's a lot of those all over the country... but the reason why parents in southern Manila who can afford to send their kids to Zobel do so is that they know it looks better on their kids' application form for DLSU and CSB while being known to produce students smart enough to be admitted to UP and AdMU on their own merit. That said, it's only about max-150 boys per batch in the 90's at Zobel who were at least 5'6. If a kid is taller than 6'4 before their growth spurt and can really play, Badolato or Jarin would have surely gotten a hold of them first for San Beda or Ateneo... so literally all Metro Manila high school teams in the 90's had like 6'2 centers and 5'9 point guards. Ultimately, Zobel wasn't really special in that regard... they just had better "bigs", bigger Jason Webb-type of guards, and definitely higher-level coaching than Muntinlupa National, Southridge, and San Beda-Alabang.

It's only 18 high schools teams that are affiliated with a college hoops program and a handful of them will surely scour the Earth for Filipino blood and talent. Then you factor in players from other leagues like Tiong Lian and CESAFI Juniors looking to impress college coaches. If Palarong Pambansa is a pipe dream instead of a formality, then you got NBTC (where that fight happened) and SBP-Pasarelle where the latak of the bunch have the most intense, dayo-like games.

Zobel also benefitted from being one of the few schools of that tier in that wide area. Only real choice for boys would be Southridge, and then Bene (current San Beda). This was way before recruiting and kids never really chose far away schools for basketball purposes.

The school was basically already a filtered pool of students from Muntinlupa, parts of Paranaque, Las Pinas and even outskirts of Laguna and Cavite (traffic wasn't as bad then). So even if it's only about a pool of 150...that 150 was already a result of filtering from a greater number.

Then add to that the heritage factor. Guys like the Webbs, Trillos, Aldeguers, etc were from athlete families of which there were plenty in the school. And many basketball coaches also live in the area like Uichico, Reyes, etc.

    • The rich kids schools in the south are Southridge, Zobel and Brent(Irus Chua). The top HS basketball programs outside Zobel are probably Perpetual, Lyceum and EAC-ICA.

Thats probably DlSU's fault for lining up Thanasis over him but Ogana is a depth piece without a guaranteed spot. Probably just annoys DLSU in that he is leaving for the same situation in UP.

True, although Ogana might be gambling for a spot in the S89 roster. UP stands to lose (at least) 6 players after S88, and they are all guards and wings (NU Bullpups + Briones). Still not a guarantee as Ogana really is more of a depth piece, and UP surely is busy recruiting for 89.

                • if up wants to win again, the dilg secretary should give a similar package to Sage Tolentino compared to what he gave to qmb. UP's frontline is not going to make them win again. Mike Phillips is going to feast on them since QMB has left.

LA Andres and Ogana play different positions. Andres is an undersized 4 while Ogana is an undersized wing.

This was what La Salle fans said ahead of Season 87 and we all know how it worked out. Too early to make predictions at this point.

Just to add, andres is 6'5, ogana is 6'1. Both are 20 y/o if im not mistaken. Plenty of years to play if the maximize their eligibility.
