  • And for the many who criticize those who train youth athletes early (and of course will also be congratulating and is proud of Yulo)....

Yulo started formally training in gymnastics at 7 years old. By age 15/16, he was already off to a foreign land to undergo advanced training.

There is a right way of doing this and a wrong way. One of the worst ways is the case of Julian Newman...training a kid early and overhyping him in a sport where he will have minimal chances of success.

But if done correctly, it is the way to become truly world-class. There's no going around it, sacrifices has to be made and it is never easy. People thinking there are easier ways to achieve this type of success has no clue about what it truly takes.

For me, the better talent identification in basketball starts at 13 or 14 where we can see the glimpse of a player's height.

Too late...there's a scientific way of determining one's height without waiting for the growth spurt. Tall parents is a high-probability indicator. Measuring certain bones of children is another one.

Asian countries like China and SoKor has already been doing this for ages and funneling children pre-growth spurt to their basketball programs.

          • Height is something that can be determined really early. One look at both of Kai Sotto's parents and you know there is a very high probability that their kids will be extremely tall. Which will again be the case if ever Kai and Fifi or Alter and Gagate has children together. It's just common sense, no need to wait for a particular age.

Same case with Yuta Watanabe, both parents were very tall. They then made him play soccer really early, and guard skills really early.

This is not rocket science. LaVar Ball figured this out more than 20 years ago. He put it into practice (specifically choosing a tall and athletic wife) and eventually produced two number 2 NBA picks. In essence, he knew his kids were going to be very tall even before they were born.

            • Another sure medal btw courtesy of Aira Villegas who won yesterday against a Home town bet in the Quarterfinals. I hope Carlos can win again later and that Petecio and
Obiena can also pull through their assignments. Mabuhay Pilipinas!

Curiously, Jeremy and Joseph Lin's parents are both 5'6. However, their relatives in the maternal side are said to be tall.

It took a hundred years and we finally have a male gold medalist in 4'10 Carlos Yulo. Hopefully, the circumstances on how that gold medal was achieved is studied and taken to heart.

It's about time that we realize that when it comes to "peak" Filipino athlete (in terms of size, speed, power) it is someone about the size of Manny Pacquiao. Common sense dictates that the sports that we would have a chance of excelling will be those where someone around 5'7 or shorter is most advantageous. Either that or something with weight classes like boxing or weightlifting.

The next key to the puzzle is early training. Yulo started formally training in gymnastics at age 7. And before that, he was already very active as a child copying his elder siblings in tumbling, jumping, etc.

Then comes world-class training. In one very fortunate happenstance, he was given a training scholarship by Japan. Starting at around 16 he was receiving world-class training and competition, this is key in becoming world-elite. Our boxers are formidable because, world-class training and competition in boxing is readily available within our country.

Taking this into basketball context...we all know we already have such a disadvantage in terms of height. It is then exacerbated by very late training (of most of our extremely tall players) and sub-par training (becoming world-level is not a goal).

It's about time we encourage and support other sports where our peak size would have the advantage and then funnel Pinoys who are not gifted with height into those sports. It will not only increase their chances, it will also avoid the dilution of our basketball teams in terms of height.
It should be start in schools and grassroots… I think gymnastics are also included in uaap or ncaa… make more children involve in sports… current children today doesn’t involve in sports… children always using mobiles nowadays, the reason we only gathered few athletes… Schools, community associated by POC and PSC should encourage children to be involve in sports…

Because the format is 1v4 and 2v3 in playoff round… USA is the top seed in QF, Germany is 2nd and Canada is 3rd… Serbia get the 4th seed after topping the quotient of 2nd seed teams in their respective groups…

                    • Here’s the rules for the KOs stages (should have just done a simple 1vs8, 2vs7 etc format)

                        Yes exactly.

1v8 2v7 would have been better and simpler. Though Canada and Germany will still face each other in the semis.

Hidelyn Diaz (1 gold and 1 silver) and Teofilo Ydelfonso (2 bronze) won multiple medals but that was separated Olympic season.. I hope Yulo will still hunger for another medal and not relax since he already won gold... Go for the kill Yulo!!!
Another to this... If he win again gold medal, he will be in the conversation of one of the greatest Filipino athlete all time.. his achievements can be equal only by Manny Pacquiao or Efren Bata Reyes.. And also he will be on the line with best athletes in the world such as Micheal Phelps, Usain bolt or now Simeon Biles as multiple gold medalist in just one Olympic season... This vault finals will determine his status as one of the best athletes in the world... And he's still young.. he might win more gold medals in 2028... A national treasure indeed....

                              Assured of atleast a Bronze.

                              But still

                              Gold is definitely possible.
