Aside from the US vets...Fournier, Batum and De Colo showed why experience is valuable.

Wemby (if he stays healthy) will be scary starting next Olympics and beyond. This defeat really stung him.
Serbia, Germany, France and Canada are still the strongest contenders of USA for 2027 and 2028 cycle.. their roster are young and will be better team in next 3 to 4 years... Australia will now entering new era post Mills and will be led by Giddey, Daniels and Green, maybe dark horse team... Slovenia and Greece should find better naturalized players to help Luka and Giannis.. they can't bring their respective countries alone... Spain will be in rebuilding phase and will wait for Mohamed Dabone to be in their seniors team to be back on top teams in FIBA ... Latvia badly needs healthy Porzingis... and I know we should not be surprise if one country or more will emerge as new threat, same what Germany did before 2023 FIBA World cup (maybe Bahamas)...

Also, Juan Wick Jaquez has played for Mexico in the PanAm games.
Embiidis not always 100% healthy and will be older in 2028... I don't see him joining again unless he will be good enough to avoid injuries going to 2028... Pan am games is like Asian games.. not FIBA sanctioned event... He can switch especially if the next head coach will be Eric Spoelstra....

      • Booker has discovered a new dimension to his game. He turned into a Klay when it comes to defensive effort. He was picking up the other team's lead guards full court, and was covering for Steph on D. And then efficient on the O side.

Would be interesting if he gets traded to the Warriors.

Interesting considering he turned up his defence in the NBA too after surprising people with his effort on the Tokyo Olympics. I'm convinced he's just pacing himself during the NBA season and can do a lot more if he isn't asked to carry the offence by himself. One of the reasons I like the addition of Monte Morris and Tyus Jones. He doesn't have to be forced to play PG anymore

The way he full-court pressed all opposing PGs and got in their grill chippy put a lot of pressure on other teams and disrupted tempos. And then I think he shot 60% from 3 the whole tournament, and because of that even if he didn't shoot, just him being a threat standing on the corner was valuable for spacing.

It's wild that France and Serbia had no choice but to play a lot of zone even if Steph, KD and Booker were on the floor together.

My biggest takeaway from this is...before, the US won games because of superior athleticism. This one was because of superior shooting. The game has truly changed.

            • What was funny is that the zone was probably the most effective defense against the US in the whole tournament

It almost worked because Serbia and France had ultra-long players who could cover a lot of ground. Their zone took out the inside game and a lot of pick and roll action.

US was ready though. 3 of the best shooters + BBIQ Lebron orchestrating high pick and pops. Teams had no answer because you had to match up Lebron with a big guy who then gets switched to Curry who dances with them way out and at the same time you have to home in on KD and Booker. And when they somehow miss, AD was there to clean up the O boards.

Needless to say, that type of lengthy zone D will be hard to crack without the right personnel.

Steph was on a shooting slump prior to France and Serbia game. And he is possibly the greatest shooter ever to play the game. You know he'll eventually finds his rhythm. It sucks for Serbia and France that it happened during their games.

Is Box & one defense still a thing? I would use that defense.. One guy will defend Curry all day long and play zone in other 4 players..

Serbia and France didn't also attacked Curry's defense... SSD was better on how stopping Curry, they did was attacked Curry's defense, Carlik Jones look Curry a G leaguer... France has taller guards that can post up or attack Curry's defense but they didn't use that....

                      • My projected team for France come 2028:

                        - Wemby (24) - 7'4
                        - Gobert (36) - 7'1
                        - Sarr (23) - 7'0
                        - Risacher (23) - 6'9
                        - Yabusele (33) - 6'8
                        - Coulibaly (24) - 6'7
                        - Ntilikina (30) - 6'6
                        - Fournier (36) - 6'6
                        - Traore (21) - 6'5
                        - Cordinier (32) - 6'5
                        - Maledon (27) - 6'4
                        - Strazel (26) - 6'0

Relatively young (7/12 are 27 or younger) but dangerous come 2028. If Sarr, Risascher and Traore turn into stars in the NBA, 2028 will be the golden year for France.

Nick Nurse did that with the Raptors against Curry in the Finals and won.

You can only do that with a team that is heavily reliant on one player. It's like a permanent double-team on one person which leaves someone else open. The other 4 players of the US will gut you if you let them.

You can’t really box and one team USA because they have a bunch of stars

                            • Overall, one of the best basketball tournaments, lots of games were close and competitive, team USA looked vulnerable at times, while they they have the advantage for now in talent lots of teams have definitely caught up and I would be surprised if they lost in 2028.

                              • My projected line-up for Canada in 2028:

                                - Clarke (32) - 6'9
                                - Birch (36) - 6'9
                                - Boucher (35) - 6'9
                                - Lyles (33) - 6'9
                                - Wiggins (34) - 6'8
                                - SGA (30) - 6'7
                                - Brooks (32) - 6'6
                                - Barrett (28) - 6'6
                                - Sharpe (25) - 6'5
                                - Murray (31) - 6'4
                                - Dort (29) - 6'4
                                - Nembhard (28) - 6'3

Veteran-laiden squad with only 4 players are younger than 30.
