  • Two games today, two teams with a league leading offense, both losing due to defense.

    • Converge went to the post with Arana. Datu and Tiongson couldn't stop him. From there Stockton and Heading were freed up. Arana also helped in defending the import. Arana is a mini-JMF. He is a bit slow because of his bulk but if you can't take advantage and you can't defend him, it will eventually be an easy win for Converge.

If only Arana is 2 inches taller, he will surely a Gilas prospect.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Many pba players would be Gilas prospects if they were 2 inches taller.

A 6'9 barefoot Tamayo might be in the NBA, there he'll be listed 6'10/6'11.

I think our average player height is about 2-3 inches below usual world norm (which means if we add 2' to our players, they become world-standard). It's improving though, the gap used to be wider.

          • yeah, we are catching up. China is no longer the undefeatable monster it was once during the 80's-90's. With the rise of a healthy duo trio of Fajardo, Sotto and Edu, Gilas will be a major stumbling block for other Asian countries similar to China's Yao, Menke, and Wang era. And with a localized Kouame, Phillips, and eligible QMB, Cone can just close his eyes and randomly pick two of our bigs to play together on the court and we will be just as competitive. Sotto, Fajardo, Edu, Kouame, QMB, Tamayo, Phillips, and KQ in one era is a dream come true for any Pinoy basketball fan.

              Good Day Sir live_

              excluding Fajardo

all those players you've mentioned can be serviceable to the Gilas program for 10 to 15 years barring no more major injuries(pls).

a healthy diet and lifestyle is really a key to strengthen those ligaments as a whole moving forward.

To give the younger people a mental picture of how the gap used to be...

We used to guard 7-footers with a chubby 6'2 Chito Loyzaga. But to his credit, his head-stuck-to-the-chest defense was effective.

I remember in the mid-90s when NBA player Penny Hardaway participated with PBA player Jun Limpot in a Nike Invitational game in China where Hardaway asked Quinito Henson what position Limpot plays. Penny was shocked when he learned Limpot plays center.

This is actually wrong IMO. What Tab did was get players to play a position they would be competitive in internationally. Arana is like DI before him. The lack of tall people in the PBA allows them to bulk up and be effective. But internationally they are almost unplayable. Or JMF for several years just bulking up because the PBA teams could not exploit his defense. It is only when we see international teams like BAD or the Eastern team that we see the need for more height across the positions in the PBA. This is where we see that KBL is a bit more superior. They train their bigs to be good perimeter shooters so they can still play against taller international competition. You see Oh Sekeun going for turn around shots against smaller competition than just plain sealing them under the basket. Both could be considered post moves but the turn around shot is at least a perimeter shot that can still be used against taller competition.

                    • That Chito Loyzaga defense against that giant North Korean is legendary. hehehe Chito had bulk, had fast hands, and very intelligent.

                      • During that era, North Korea was not a pushover in basketball (they low key love basketball). The guy 6'2 Chito guarded was listed 7'9" (probably exaggerated for propaganda). Those who watched the game could not forget it because Chito had his belly velcroed towards the crotch of the North Korean the whole time.

Also the time of prime Caidic who had several Curry-like games.

7'9 Ri Myung Hun aka Michael Ri, name given to him by agents, who tried to make him as the first North Korean to play in the NBA.

Equally amusing is 6'5 Marc Pingris butting heads literally with 7'0 Omer Asik of T

Kim Jong Un was in his pre-teens during that time and that North Korean basketball era was probably the reason why he loves basketball until now.

Basketball is unofficially their 2nd sport after football.. they still have a team in women's counterpart.. they have 7 footer lady who played last asian games and make it to the semis.. I dunno why they are not participating in Fiba tournaments.. their final participation were last 2017, when Gilas women's team dispatch North Korea team in Division A final slot.. after that they not participating in Fiba tournaments anymore... But don't be surprise if they participate again in the future...
