  • Mapua University head coach Randy Alcantara revealed that he underwent a major medical procedure several months ago that sidelined the veteran tactician for at least three months in the lead-up to NCAA Season 100.

Alcantara shared he had a cervical spine surgery in March from a medical condition he had already been feeling for a time. The Mapua coach said it worsened at the opening of the second round last season until their finals duel against San Beda University in December.

That prompted Alcantara to finally go under the knife, saying he was thinking long-term as the Cardinals eye for redemption in the centennial season.

"Naramdaman ko siya mga start ng second round last season, pero meron na talaga pero kumbaga lumala lang. Bawal talaga ng sobrang stress at puyat, eh siyempre sa trabaho namin kailangan maya’t maya mag-review eh," Alcantara told GMA News Online.

"Nu’ng time na ’yun, dalawa pa ‘yung hawak ko eh so at least nakapagpaalam muna ako kina Sen. Jinggoy at naka-leave ako sa San Juan and pinayagan naman nila ako."

Alcantara, however, said he has recovered now and is all ready to lead the Cardinals to the promised land.

"‘Yung cervical spine ko, ayon ‘yung nagpahirap sa akin during last season so kung mapapansin niyo no’n, tumataas lagi BP (blood pressure) ko no’n during the second round at nu’ng finals," he added.

"So ngayon, okay na naman at nakaraos ako. Tapos na ‘yung operation seven months ago, so hopefully, tuloy-tuloy na recovery ko. May mga nerves na talagang kailangan operahan."

With Alcantara regaining his full health now, the Cardinals have been unstoppable in the second round, winning six games in a row as they cruised to the Final Four and are in good position to book a twice-to-beat bonus.

Brutal schedule for you guys as you will go through the Intramuros triangle.

All crucial games pa. They could eliminate both letran lpu, while securing number 1 seed if they win out. This stretch could really define their season. Realistically tho, i think they'll go 2-2. 3 or 4 wins is already a bonus.

        • Pretty interesting comment there for Jeff Napa recently, saying that if they're here in the ncaa "nandoon sila taas". Exactly how many wins do you think this year's nu team will get if they in the ncaa this year.

          Their lineup without the FSAs:
          1. Steve Nash Enriquez (5'9)
          2. Ian Jolo Manansala (6'4)
          3. Jake Figueroa (6'2)
          4. Reinhard Jumamoy (5'11)
          5. Patrick Wilson Yu (6'3)
          6. PJ Palacielo (6'6)
          7. Donn Lim (6'1)
          8. Mark Parks (6'4)
          9. Justine Garcia (5'11)
          10. Lenard Santiago (6'1)
          11. Paul Francisco (6'2)
          12. Nathaniel Tulabut (6'1)
          13. Kenshin Padrones (6'5)
          14. Edmund Dela Cruz (6'3)
          15. Kurt Perciano (6'7)

          Reserves:
          16. Vince Reyes (6'3)
          17. Sean Timbang (6'1)
          18. RJ Colonia (6'1)

They look alot smaller pala without the fsa. I think they'll be good enough for the final 4 but dont think they'll reach the finals. Ive watched their preseason games. Even teams like San Beda and St. Benilde can beat them, its the fsa factor that was the difference. Even liwag had a hard time containing diassana and the other fsa who are well over 6'6. But i still like the team tho, they have lots of shooters and enriquez jumamay guard combo is still deadly but the lack of good one on one defenders might hurt them especilly against teams like benilde that has crafty scorers and good size in every position. In an 18 game season, i think they'll be good enough for maybe 11-12 wins.

They do look smaller pero ive been watching their games, guys like yu, dela cruz and reyes can play as undersized 4 in the ncaa. Pero yeah i think they lack good individual defenders to really win a ring. Their defense is mostly systematic, so teams that have lots of really good scorers can easily bust their defense. I think the top 3 teams this year can easily sweep them, while teams like letran and arellano who have bigs that can matchup with theirs can snatch a game from them.

Imo i think they'll also be in the 12 win range just because they 'lack' the size and depth at the 4 spot since most of their lineups this year prioritize shooting.

              • They are still bigger than most teams in the ncaa. Their bigs are actually pretty good its their pg play that is kinda weird. Manansala would be a mythical level player with no FSA clogging his lane to the basket

                • Also no Ncaa team is beating a full strength UP team yet nu did it.

Manansala would have trouble with the physicality of the ncaa. While they maybe taller than most of the ncaa teams, the good ones are actually taller than them, not to mention they lack size and depth at the forward spot.

Also anytime a team commits 30 to's, any team can beat them so i believe they just caught UP on awful day.

dirtier doesnt equal more physical .

He plays against bigger and taller players in the uaap. He will be more than fine in a league with a higher pace. In the ncaa its been more about speed . Hubilla isnt as good (right now) and is doing well.

When was the last time you even watch an ncaa game lmao. When i talk about physicality of the ncaa im talking about the leniency of the officials in calling games. You dont have to be dirty to play physical and if you cant differentiate one from the other then clearly you dont know your basketball. He played for the greenies and once cagulangan and company left he can only lead.lsgh to a 4th place finish. You tell me someone who couldnt even dominate in ncaa jrs will be mythical in the seniors.Come on now, you're reaching. I love the guy but lets not overreact and overhype a team that had trouble against fsa less teams during the preseason. You even bringup hubilla who has diffrent skillset and play style? Of course he's doing well here, he was never a fit in the uaap anyways.

If you watch the ncaa this year only san sebastian plays fast. Everyone else is a halfcourt team. And im sure once defenses focuses on him, he'll be shut down.

has it even been close to happening? Within the last two years has it happened? tbh i honestly dont know but CSB would get eaten alive by QMB on the boards.

Outrebounded sure, but eaten alive on the boards, not really. Benilde could simply play big as well and box the guy out. Besides their bigs, benilde has guys in the wing that are pretty solid rebounders.

Anyways give this benilde team emman ojuala, their usual foreign import or even bright nwanko who sometimes trains with most of the guys in the team and i believe this benilde lineup can go toe to toe with this year's UP team. I mean system wise, what rajko and charles tiu has implemented for them is already miles ahead with what gold has done with his team. The only thing going for UP, individually, everyone can really play.
