Well, KQ started playing in college at 21 so it's not that far off. The problem is when a lot of guys do this (being 1-4 years older for the batch) then the players with the correct age are at a big disadvantage and will have to usually wait in Team Bs or be bench players. Legitimately good players will be dislodged by players who are only better because they are older (which is why some mediocre college players suddenly blossom in the pros and vice versa).

It will be interesting to see a chart showing the average age of college players through the years. I still remember a time when 16 year old college players were common.

And I don't buy the K-12 excuse, regular students I know still graduate HS at 18 and 19 at most.
Even i was 16 when i got into college, only turned 17 few weeks later, most of my batchmates in college were around the same age. That was only past a decade ago. Tho i noticed most of these overaged guys are like this because they either have to repeat a grade or 2 or started studying late. It is a big disadvantage for their opponents when they have to face them in basketball since the overaged guys have mostly grown into their bodies; whereas the younger players are still developing. Thats why i dont get the praise these guys get when they "dominate" in hs ball. Ill be more impress if they play great against guys the same age, or when younger players play well above their age group.

Other freshmen in this batch were Dave Marcelo, Garvo Lanete and Alvin Padilla coming from the Red Cubs. The latter were all 18-year old freshmen. There was no K-12 at this time.

Caram was relegated to Team B in 2008 and elevated back to Team A in 2009.
Even now, there's 18 year old freshmen like Cabanero. Most Batang Gilas alumni and Filams (straight from HS) are still also 18 when they start college. I think Fran Yu started at 16/17 in UE (but managed to end his college career at around 25).

Circumstances especially those from provinces or players with humble means make this unavoidable. But, the problem is when teams overdo it, there's a domino effect and everyone's development gets delayed. This lowers their potential upside.

This is also done in the US. The term used is "holdbacks." Most ranked players are hold backs in middle school (repeat 1 or more grades). When they get a scholarship offer in high school, they then "reclassify" to their original grade (skip forward). That way when they enter college, they still get the advanced development trajectory. Most NBA players did this.

Being 1 year older or more in teenage years is a huge advantage. Especially in our setting where more physicality is allowed.

I actually said in the UAAP Season 86 thread that if you are over 19 over the course of the season, you should play for the senior team, whether you're in college or in HS: https://www.interbasket.net/forums/f...20#post2406620

I actually think the cut-off age for juniors should be 19 during the season or school year. Question is, is there a possibility that this will be implemented?

          • Being 21 during junior/senior prom is wild. Hopefully, there are also hold back girls to date.

            • Former Red Lions Brendon Ocampo and Mark Gabieta are in the roster of MCU. Along with them is former UP FSA prospect Jayveon Coleman.

They've been there since april, already played for them in the pinoyliga collegiate cup and succeding tourneys. They've also have 4 more fil-canadians, one that played in the nbtc besides ocampo and former JRU player Mark Joson, who was one of the 6 guys that played after most of the team got suspended in the amores fiasco lol haha. Some other players were castoffs of good ncaa and uaap schools. Seems like they suddenly have pretty good backing and should give CEU a run for their money in UCAL

I think different awards na ang freshman and rookie of the year(straigh from high school). FOY could be hubilla. Other strong contenders for the award: beda's bonzalida, jru's jp pangilinan, perps' mark gojo cruz. ROY award i'd like to say csb's ian torres, beda's bryan sajonia or Letran's jimboy estrada.

I'd have to agree with the rest of the awardees except for the mythical 5, i'd add Ynot and MIP might be JRU's Shawn Argente or LPU's John Barba. For the all defense team other than escamis, knt be surprised if the rest of the 5 are bigs

I think Gurtiza might be having a hard time cracking the mythical 5. EAC still has Doromal and Pagsanjan who are high usage players as well.

So nothing special for this season.

The NCAA should experiment on changing the venues like doing the weekend games on either MOA Arena or Araneta. I think part of the reason why the attendance is so low is because Filoil is just not that accessible. I think even Cuneta Astrodome is a better alternative location wise. I even thought the idea of all member schools co-hosting this season was a great idea to shoulder the cost on holding the games in bigger venues. They should experiment. Otherwise, the attendance will not change.

I heard Brit Reroma is back with the Red Cubs in a consultant role. His son apparently moved from NU HS to SBU Taytay.
