That is a legitimate concern. At the very least, scholarship until HS graduation should be guaranteed for minors. These should weed out bad actors and those without proper resources (we also don't want them to flood in because there's also limited college slots eventually). HS diploma from Philippine schools is way better for most of where the athletes come from.

Risk goes both ways too. FSAs could also develop well during HS and decide to go to the US/somewhere else for college.

Well, those kids and their parents will gladly take the opportunity to come here in the Philippines for both educational opportunity and possible basketball career than rot in their "homeland". This practice is no longer new - ballclubs in Europe have been doing this for a longtime.

Really? Thought he is a Fil-For. Regardless, it is a welcome development.

The filfor is a different kid. Goodluck Okabeta, currently playing for the jhs team.

ball clubs in europe at least don’t kick out minors from their dorm.

Promising a better life to a poor family and selling a dream but if they underperform they get tossed out. It’s no longer new and we’ve been doing it for a while yet we still haven’t treated our FSA’s any better than before if anything we have treated them worse.

Check HoopJunkie's post. i think it was weeks ago. An FSA from their juniors team posterized a player in the NGBL.

not necessarily. teams need backup FSAs given injuries can happen anytime.

i also saw them play for team b. the tall one is extremely raw and soft. the other one is a bit better but he doesn't seem to be better than balogun right now anyways. lol

Heck if they can kick out and evict locals, what more their fsa counterparts who are treated not as students but as imports that are expected to perform asap.

The long and short of it is that FSA’s here are treated like second class players but theres of course a few exceptions. They know they have nothing to get back to and still exploit that. Of course they are more expensive to get over cause they have agents even though they are young , lodging and plane tickets . HS teams here have a limited budget to work with as well.

                        • Exploitation of migrants, ofws, immigrants, illegals, etc (including minors) happens everywhere. Those who think it doesn't happen in Europe and the US are naive. They are a vulnerable sector and there will always be bad actors who will exploit that.

Jorge Gutierrez (former nba) moved to the US from Mexico as a young teenager. He was put up in a house with many other prospects where they lived like migrant workers. He got lucky and got a scholarship but most everyone he was with went nowhere. For every Giannis in Europe, there are countless limbo refugees, migrants, illegals who got exploited for sports and became just a statistic.

We do what we can to curtail exploitation but if it can happen in developed countries, what more in the Philippines. Bottom line is, these immigrants (just like their pinoy counterparts) come from situations where it's a lot worse.

One thing we can try to implement is guaranteed scholarship until HS graduation for minor FSAs. At the very least, their Philippine education would be valuable from where they came from. And like I said, this discourages the schools without the necessary budget.

More than 15,000 children are trafficked into Europe every year with false hopes of making it as professional footballers.

                            • Terrence Fortea having a bounceback season is not something I expected. That shooting form is money as long as he's not trying to create on his own. I remember sometime before he also had some interest from Korean clubs?

                              • When it comes to pure talent, Fortea has always been the highest upside UP guard. That's why he already got international interest early.

The other guards are just more physical and willing to do the dirty work so they fit well locally.
