  • A seemingly nobody, John Abate, basically outplayed KQ up to making the game finishing FTs. It seems 3 pt defense is DLSUs weakness isnt it?

You play from behind then you press and use 3 bigs to overwhelm the defense . They shot poorly but they were rushing a lot of shots trying to come back.

The poor shooting is part and parcel because of their bad start and terrible minutes management . Heck one of those 3’s came from Philips

      • It’s more than just free throws. NU showed a path to possibly beating DLSU and UE just walked through it. By playing small and forcing DLSU to slow closeouts on threes and DLSU risking KQ to be surrounded by non-floor spacers.

        • A tale of two experiments:

UP makes a calculated risk with starting Gani beside QMB, getting QMB to score outside in the first, and then riding stars and vets JD, Francis, QMB, and JJF, before experimenting again with Walker in the endgame.

DLSU fucks around with getting KQ off the bench, then proceeds to ride him on a very inefficient outing, all the way to flubbing the last two FTs.

Even the NCAA when they were handled by TV5 group (AKTV) their timeslots are also 4 pm and 6 pm. UAAP should just focus on their varsity channel and let it be televised via free TV.

I mean, UP's experiments mostly involved finding the right mix of players, or happened when the game was all but decided.

IIRC, JD has started all 4 games so far, and Lopez, while coming off the bench, maintains more or less the same PT and substitution pattern.

DLSU sat their best player - and the MVP front runner - to start the game, then fielded him with around 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter. He still played 31 minutes though, so meaning he played 31 of the 34-35 minutes since he came in. Those missed FTs probably is a by product of fatigue

              • Up is athletic and tall enough to make life miserable at the perimeter. Clearly it was trying combinations it is not comfortable with in the last minutes. Thus, the 14-0 blast by its opponent to lower the insurmountable lead.

All past 4 of the maroons' opposing teams have nothing serious in the paint. Up hardly needs to use its main unmatched advantage in quick and hardworking bigs yet: taking any 2-3 of qmb, ududo, gani and alter to make life miserable in the paint. Power plays from combinations of their many bigs will nonetheless be crucial in the final four -- when both desperation and physicality escalates -- to snuff out the life from other teams. But for now, sitio balling is still usable. Really short players like cagulangan and felicilda continue to have productive outings, instead of being one-on-one mismatch casualties.

All four games show dlsu is still eminently beatable without exemplary performance from kikiam. Phillips is reliable, but relies too much on gulang -- some with clealy morally flexible intentions. Other teams will certainly put their toughest guarding on kq to make his life miserable for over 30 minutes.

But i feel that it will still be the money teams of dlsu and up in the finals. Lahat ng ibang team may malaking bungi from 1 to 5. They certainly have the enthusiasm to compete. But enthusiasm, like eagerness, can only take you so far.

Stockton to malone was a deadly pairing, until it smashed into the deadlier pippen to jordan combination. Ler us see if this season 87 has something interesting to show.

                • I was never the biggest fan of Nelle but that DLSU - UE game perfectly encapsulated DLSU's lack of a steady point guard. Every possession (albeit from both teams) was rushed and was the definition of helter-skelter basketball.

That said, UE's gameplan of jacking up three's worked (they were 12/30, I think) but it's a huge gamble that just paid off. I still believe 9 times out of 10, DLSU wins. Still though, huge props to UE. They were clogging the passing lanes, leading to tons of DLSU turnovers. KQ has to tone down on some of his passes (most were easily read by defenders) and just be selfish and take over the game.

                  • So are we saying that the kai batch in batang gilas does have high level.guard in panopio and padrigao and its wrong to say that they were unlucky because the guards during kai, edu and tamayo's time were mediocre
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
                    1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

                      • It's not that unusual for a player to have a huge leap of improvement in their early 20s. It takes a while especially for PGs to figure out when to score and when to orchestrate. Recent guys who took a leap are Remogat, Cortez (unknowns in HS) and Cagu (overlooked in dlsu).

They're usually players who already has "it" in them, they just need the perfect situation/opportunity and maturation.

                        • i know ust has been winning but forthsky's performance has been mediocre imo. ofc he's a major upgrade to manalang but he hasn't been great. equally important to ust's early season success is their much improved big man rotation. their import is pretty good at his role and gelo crisostomo has emerged as a legit uaap big man.

He is the son of ex-PBA player John Arigo.

He’s a project. When he was in the Red Cubs, Adrian Sollano was in the 15-man roster while Brix was in the reserves. Sollano is not even getting minutes now with the Red Lions. That’s how far Brix and the Adwil Yaps are.
