Torculas defends well on the perimeter, as does Lopez. They can stay in front of opposing perimeter players. As for Chicco and Belmonte, can't assess that much yet, although I saw Belmonte keep up with Jolo Manansala and stay in front.

    • On cue, Belmonte shows the potential I was mentioning about him.

Again, what's remarkable about this is the rate of his improvement. He was very raw not that long ago.

The way he crosses over with such a low dribble and shifty hips is very rare for our guys his length.

What impressed and surprised me the most though was his decision making. Didn't force his shots and located the open man when he needed to. NU's zone defense was toast once he manned that middle area. Belmonte's improvement has been fun to watch.

I like the vision too, he just has to stop making jump passes. Keep feet on the ground.

          • Happy for Belmonte's progress and development considering John Amores nearly ended his career just a few years ago.

If Bayla's height is 6'5" then Belmonte is at least 6'7'' tall.

The other uaap teams are eager to compete well. But eagerness can only get you so far. A team must be technically qualified and purposely built to win.

The 12s or main guards of up are rather ordinary by uaap standards. But up's 345s as a group is exceptionally athletic, has size, and has reliable shooting abilities that the others dont have. These frontliners could easily have turned the game into a dunkfest demolition job, and nu could not have done anything to stop it

Nu brought knives to a gunfight against the s87 maroons.

The awful maroons of previous decades brought rocks to gunfights against admu and dlsu. Baldwin now has most of the rocks.

                  Last I read, Bayla's 6'4.

                  • Belmonte’s usually listed at 6’5” but the eye test betrays that it’s a bit smaller than his actual height. He might have grown a little since entering UP. But his length does functionally make him 6’7”/8”.

                    • Belmonte can be a good 3 for FIBA. He just has to develop a boss attitude to realize his potential.

I would also love to see Bayla get some reps at SG. He has a good size on that position for FIBA.

                          • Read somewhere that coach Gold is in the shortlist of the batang gilas gig. If he ever is named and takes it, will he vacate the up job? If ever who will replace him?

Or will he use batang gilas as a pipeline for the maroons similar to what pumaren and altamirano did before

or if LA gets the gig, will UST/Alfrancis hoard the gilas U teams
